After that war he resigned again from military life. He ran his farm, was a state and US senator and a diplomat. He was unsuccessful in 1836 in his bid for the presidency, but in 1840 he won on the slogan “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too.” He caught cold at his inauguration. It turned into pneumonia and he died after only thirty-two days in office. Although a successful general and president, Washington remained interested in farming throughout his presidency. He bred animals, specializing in the breeding of mules and helped to raise the quality of stock across the nation. As the first president, Washington had many new tasks to accomplish with trial and error as the only available method for accomplishing them. After appointing people to head the four executive departments, he tried to meet with each head, or ] secretary, individually. This proved to be daunting. As a result he had the secretaries meet with him as a group, forming the government's first cabinet. New York was the nation’s first capital, but people felt that the capital should be outside the territory of any states. George Washington selected the site for our current capital between the states of Maryland and Virginia. While the new capital was being built, Washington led the country from Philadelphia, which served as a temporary capital.

William Henry Harrison Memorial Louis T. Rebisso (1837-1899) bronze on granite base Piatt Park, Garfield Place at Elm Street The 9th U.S. President and the first from Ohio, William Henry Harrison sits astride a horse at the west end of Piatt Park. Harrison, whose home was just west of Cincinnati in North Bend, led a successful political campaign as an Indian fighter and war hero. Unfortunately, he died from pneumonia, a month after his inauguration in 1841, which is the shortest term of office of any U.S. president. Artist Rebisso's portrayal of Harrison is the only equestrian sculpture in Cincinnati, and the horse's elevated front leg indicates his rider was wounded in battle. Home of William Henry Harrison William Henry Harrison W illiam Henry Harrison was the Governor of the Indiana Territory from 1800-1812, and later served as the ninth President of the United States. He was president for only thirty days. He died on April 4, 1841, from the pneumonia he caught after giving his inaugural address G rouseland was named after the grouse, a bird President Harrison loved to hunt. His bedroom is decorated with wallpaper featuring pictures of this bird. The Daughters of American Revolution had this wallpaper made when restoring the home. William Henry Harrison's bedroom Grouseland W elcome to Grouseland, the first brick building in Vincennes. President and Mrs. Harrison lived in this seventeen room mansion along with 8 of their 10 children. Legislators stayed at Grouseland while visiting Vincennes. Townspeople were also invited to stay there while under Indian attacks. T he Harrison mansion was restored to look like it did in the 1800's. It is filled with antique furniture, china, and paintings of the 1800's. There are even mannequins clothed to show how people dressed in that time period.

He died one month after his inauguration in 1841 and was the first president to die while in office. Before becoming president, Harrison had served as a soldier, territorial governor, congressman, senator, and diplomat. But it was his military career that won him the greatest fame and popularity with American voters. During the election campaign of 1840, Harrison's supporters pictured him as the "log cabin" candidate. Actually, he had been born into one of the most distinguished families in Virginia and raised on a large plantation. Early Years and Career Harrison was born on February 9, 1773, at his father's plantation, Berkeley, in Charles City County, Virginia. His father, Benjamin Harrison, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, a close friend of George WASHINGTON , and governor of Virginia. William Henry was the youngest of the seven Harrison children. He received his early education at home and attended Virginia's Hampden-Sidney College without gaining a degree. His father wanted him to become a doctor, so William was sent to study medicine in Richmond and Philadelphia. When his father died in 1791, Harrison gave up medicine to join the Army. In 1791 the 18-year-old Harrison, newly commissioned as an ensign in the First Regiment of Infantry, arrived in Fort Washington (now Cincinnati, Ohio) in the Northwest Territory. Indian wars were then raging in this frontier region, and young Harrison learned his trade as a soldier fighting Indians.
