FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ARTS DURING THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE TOPIC OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH LECTURE CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 17, 2003 - An art historian from the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning at the University of Cincinnati will present a lecture Feb. 6 at Southeast Missouri State University titled "The 'New Negro' Movement: Arts in the 1920s and 30s." Professor Theresa Leininger-Miller will speak at 7 p.m. in Crisp Hall Room 125 in honor of Black History Month. Her lecture will focus on the work of African-American artists in the period now known as the Harlem Renaissance - a time when authors, musicians and artists focused on African-American identity, culture and history. The term "Harlem Renaissance" is generally applied to a number of African-American writers, artists and musicians active in New York and other cities during the 1920s and 1930s, said Dr. Stanley Grand, director of the University Museum. Following the lead of W.E.B. Du Boiswhose milestone book The Souls of Black Folk (1903) rejected unflattering 19th-century stereotypes of African-Americansmany of the emerging talents associated with the "Harlem Renaissance" promoted the ideal of the educated, cultured and sophisticated "New Negro."

Voices from the Harlem Renaissance
Edited by the late NATHAN IRVIN HUGGINS

An extraordinary look at the Harlem Renaissance's remarkable outpouring of literature and art
The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s symbolized black liberation and sophisticationthe final shaking off of slavery, in the mind, spirit, and character of African-Americans. It was a period when the African-American came of age, with the clearest expression of this transformation visible in the remarkable outpouring of literature, art, and music. In these years the "New Negro" was born, as seen in the shift of black leadership from Booker T. Washington to that of W.E.B. Du Bois, from Tuskegee to New York, and for some, even to the African nationalism of Marcus Garvey. In Voices from the Harlem Renaissance , Nathan Irvin Huggins provides more than 120 selections from the political writings and arts of the period, each depicting the meaning of blackness and the nature of African-American art and its relation to social statement. Through these pieces, Huggins establishes the context in which the art of Harlem Renaissance occurred. We read the call to action by pre-Renaissance black spokesmen, such as A. Philip Randolph and W.E.B. DuBois whothrough magazines such as The Messenger ("the only radical Negro magazine"), and the NAACP's

S UMMARY This exhibit tells the story of the African-American artists' quest for creative recognition in their chosen art forms. The story follows these artists via their early exposure to European art and genre paintings and respectfully following these rules in their learned crafts. Later, there is a fusion shown, using the European, African, and American cultural context in these artists' works. The exhibit is a visual presentation, along with historical text covering the early and recent achievements of these artists involved in the Visual Arts. Over 60 personalities are on display with biographical facts and information. Many examples of their creations are also represented. Included are: painters, sculptors, muralists, engravers, portraitists, print makers, illustrators, photographers, woodcut printers, lithographers, folk artists, and cartoonists. Books, pictures, photos, magazines, museum catalogs, visual crafts, [etc.] are on display. Library resources and established museums as focal reference art centers are included to enhance the viewers scope in seeking additional information on this subject. A bibliography is available upon request.

LACMA is pleased to offer this important American art to the people of Los Angeles."
Hi everyone,
I wanted to send out an e-mail to as many people as possible, encouraging you all to see the above referenced art exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Although I plan to visit the exhibit this weekend, others who have seen it have had nothing but absolutely wonderful things to
say about the exhibit. I do know that the exhibit "expands and explores the parameters through which the Harlem Renaissance has been traditionally understood." Additionally, "the exhibition presents the Harlem Renaissance as an international dialogue that crosses intellectual, political, and cultural boundaries." The exhibit will feature such artists as: Jacob Lawrence, William H. Johnson, Archibald J. Motley, Jr., James VanDerZee, Aaron Douglas, and Lois Mailou Jones etc.
