Teach your Children how Different Cultures Celebrate
This holiday season, parents have an excellent opportunity to expose children to holidays and customs different from the ones celebrated in their own homes. Besides Christmas, two other important holidays celebrated in December are Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. The History of Hanukkah
Hanukkah, a Jewish holiday, celebrates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. King Antiochus of Syria ruled Judea 2,500 years ago, and forbid the Jews to practice their religion. A group of Jews secretly united and formed an army to fight the Syrians. They called themselves Maccabees, with Judah as their leader. Eventually they grew strong enough to defeat the Syrian army and reclaimed Judea. The Syrians had polluted all but one container of olive oil, which was used to light the menorah, a light that burned continuously in the Temple. Because there was only enough oil to last for one day, Judah sent for more, but learned it would take at least a week to arrive. Miraculously, the menorah burned for eight nights on that small amount of oil. Hanukkah (also spelled "Chanukah") begins each year on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev and lasts for eight nights. This year the holiday begins on December 4. Each night, the family says a blessing and lights the menorah. A special candle, the Shamosh, is lit first each night, and the other candles are lit from its flame. The first night, the candle on the far right is lit; each night the family lights an additional candle.

Hanukkah is here, that special time of year. The time of bitter sweet rejoicing. A time for family. A time for rededication. A time to focus on the promise of the resurrection. A time to let your menorah shine before men. Did you know that we are commanded to teach our children about Hanukkah? Look up the Scripture in Proverbs 22:6. Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. The Hebrew word for "train up" in this verse is chanuk Chanuk (pronounced with a gutter "ch" - "h" sound) is the root word in Hanukkah and it means dedication. The Exegeses Bible puts it this way: Hanukkah up a lad . So we are encouraged by the Scriptures to teach our children about Hanukkah (Dedication) to the Lord Yahweh. Here are some suggestions to make Hanukkah memories that will last a lifetime:
Read the story of Hannah and her seven sons from 2 Maccabees 7:1-42 and 4 Maccabees 8:1-18:21. The Maccabees books are found in the Apocrypha of some Bibles. It is a powerful teaching about one family's dedication and determination to serve the God of Israel and Him only no matter what the cost. Hannah's steadfast testimony for the Word of God is one of courage and endurance to the end.

THIS hanukkah, LET’S teach OUR CHILDREN HOW TO GIVE. by GilTroy. The Canadian Jewish News 28 November 2002, B2-B3

by Gil Troy The Canadian Jewish News - 28 November 2002, B2-B3 Main: Why I Am A Zionist Homepage News Newspaper and Journal Articles ... WHY I AM A ZIONIST Jews are preparing to celebrate Hanukkah, our festival of lights, during a particularly dark period. The world seems to have gone mad. Islamic extremists declare war on the West, and many, especially in Europe and Canada, deny and dither, afraid to respond too assertively. Palestinians declare a war of terror on Israel, and too many, including Israelis and Jews, are quicker to blame Israel, the victim, than the Palestinian perpetrators. It is precisely during such bleak moments that we are compelled to celebrate. Rejoicing in past victories helps put our current troubles in perspective, reminding us that we have suffered before, and not just survived but thrived. Moreover, with terrorists trying to rob innocents of any joy, and any semblance of a normal life, observing holidays becomes yet another act of defiance, a leap of faith asserting our commitment to stick to the everyday. In the modern world, this festival of gelt-giving and of lights became the popular Jewish response to Christmas envy, the malady that seized many a Jewish household each December. In fact, with eight nights, and thus eight opportunities for gift-giving, Hanukkah became a way for Jews to trump their Christian neighbors.

HANUKKAH
A man once came to a Rabbi and said, “Rabbi, please teach my child Torah.” The Rabbi answered, “If you study Torah, your child will study Torah willingly and with great enthusiasm. If you do not study Torah, but only ask me to teach your child, your child will only come to another Rabbi to teach his child Torah, but will never truly study Torah with all his heart. It is a common practice to want to make sure that our children are equipped with the proper values and knowledge. Too often, however, we neglect our own study and spiritual development. Jewish tradition tells us that we should also continue our Jewish journey by proper study, prayer and practice. One of the celebrations which we frequently view as mostly for the children is Hanukkah. It is true that much of the ritual is attractive to our young ones, much more so that say, Yom Kippur. But proper study of Hanukkah can produce new and useful interpretations. Therefore, let us take a few moments to examine a few possibilities. In the time of the Maccabees, there were two struggles going on. The first and more well known was the fight against the external forces. The Grecco Syrians had taken control of Israel and were forcing the Hebrew to adopt their ways and customs. The Maccabbees were few in number and ill equipped compared to the invading forces. Yet, through patience and perserverance, the few were able to overcome the mighty. There was also an internal struggle. Some Jews found the Greek culture very inviting. There were those who were all too willing to capitulate.

Hanukkah - "The Feast of Dedication"
Terminology and Scriptural References
What does the word Hanuakkah mean? This word means "dedication." The root of the word is "education" (Strong's Concordance Number 1456). This is a festival that educates or teaches about dedicating your "temple" or "life" to God. We all want to learn about the preparation of our "temples" where Yeshua haMashiach ( Jesus the Messiah) lives. Our living "temples" are just as important to God today, as His Holy Temple that once stood in Jerusalem. Biblical References: Dan 8:3-12, 20-25 Dan 11:1-45 Zech 9:13 John 10:22-23
Historical Source Material: The book of First Maccabees - particularly Chapters 1 - 4 Introduction - I Macc. 1:1-10 The story of Hanukkah goes back to a time after Alexander the Great had conquered most of the known world. When he died at a very young age, his four generals divided the conquered territories between themselves. The Ptolemies took the area around Egypt, and the Seleucids took the area that is today Syria. Judea was almost a no-man's land between them, fought over by both sides. Eventually the Seleucids under Antiochus IV gained power and control over Judea. In 168 BCE to secure his position and dominance, Antiochus required all the captured people to adopt the Greek way of life called Hellenism. This was not a problem in most areas because the Greek culture was very respected in those times and many of the Jews adopted it and gave up the Commandments and teachings of the prophets. There were, however, many dedicated observant Jews who would not give up their worship of the one true G-d thus angering Antiochus.

Hanukkah brings Jews together in celebration
By Karen Bair The Herald

(Published December 10, 2001) The menorah of miracles was ablaze with wishes, but the flame that glowed most often on Winthrop University's Hanukkah menorah was a plea for "Peace." Students, faculty, staff and members of the community - both Jewish and non-Jewish - arrived at Winthrop University's Dinkins Student Center to learn and teach about Hanukkah, the Jewish celebration of a miracle in Jerusalem about 2,100 years ago. Although Hanukkah begins at sundown tonight, the campus event was held a few weeks early, before students began taking exams and departing for the holiday break. Members of the Jewish Student Organization, the event's sponsors, had adorned one wall with a large poster of a menorah. Each guest was asked to inscribe one flame with a wish for a miracle. The menorah was radiant with yearnings for "Peace."

~ The Second Temple ~ YHVH is a God of his word, so when the children of Israel rebelled, and followed after pagan gods, HaShem first punished the house of Israel by divorcing them (Jer. 3:8) and sending them into captivity by the hand of the Assyrians. He did not allow them to return except in very small numbers. Some time later He called upon Nebuchadnezzar to come from Babylon, destroy the Temple, and take the house of Judah captive.
But God was also true to the second part of His promise, for God brought the people of Judah back to Jerusalem after they had repented of their wicked ways. (The return of the House of Israel is yet to occur.)
There were actually three returns of the House of Judah from Babylon to Jerusalem. The first was led by Zerubbabel c. 538 BCE, when work was begun on the rebuilding of the Temple. I-however the work was discontinued about two years later and not resumed again until c. 520 BCE. The Temple was finally completed in 515 BCE, a full seventy years after the full term of the captivity had taken place.
In c. 457 BCE there was a second return to Jerusalem led by Ezra, the Scribe and Priest. It has been said that Zerubbabel rebuilt the physical Temple, while Ezra rebuilt the spiritual Temple.

A Solar Ner Tamid:
The Ultimate Rededication
A new and meaningful way to rededicate your synagogue is by installing a Solar Ner Tamid. The concept is a simple one: to power this holy light with clean, renewable energy by installing a solar panel. (There is a battery backup for rainy days.) Although this is a relatively new idea, several congregations across North America are already using them. Temple Emanuel of the Greater Washington area has been using their Solar Ner Tamid for seven years in addition to completing regular energy audits. Rabbi Warren Stone of Temple Emanuel (and also a COEJL Board member!) recalls, "When we were redesigning our sanctuary we sought out a solar energy company to help us install solar panels on the synagogue roof to illuminate our Ner Tamid. When I approached the CEO of Solarax in Frederick, Maryland and told him of our plan, he became very excited about the prospect, as he was an orthodox Jew himself. The cost was around $3500 for the entire installation. It was a small price to pay for its symbolic values to teach about Judaism and environmental issues." Rabbi Stone also chairs the Central Conference of American Rabbis' committee on the environment, and was instrumental in the resolution passed at the CCAR 2000 conference calling for Reform congregations to develop environmental policies and consider installing a Solar Ner Tamid. He shares that the Solar Ner Tamid sets an important example, as it serves "to teach Jewish concern for the earth and our responsibility for using resources wisely."
