The current deplorable conditions of today's Haiti shattered the childhood perceptions that I still held in my mind. The withholding of millions of dollars of aid has brought my home to her knees and her government on the verge of collapse. The international community, especially the United States and France, have benefited a great deal from Haiti over the years, and they have an obligation to help rebuild, instead of destroy, the country. Being a very young democracy, and virtually a young 200-year-old country, Haiti will need the support of the international community to stand up on her own. In my childhood memories, I lived up the hill in Caridad, just outside of Port-au-Prince, went to school everyday to Ecole Jean XXIII

Religious Culture
Haitian slaves saw and built correlations between Catholic saints and African deities. They looked at the images of St. Patrick casting serpents out of Ireland and read signs of Danbala, the serpentine spirit of life force. In the Virgin Mary they saw different faces of Ezili, the powerful female divinity. Adherents of Vodou do not see themselves as members of a separate religion; they consider themselves Roman Catholic.

http://haitiforever.com/windowsonhaiti/note-ed.shtml
Windows on Haiti was designed to facilitate a positive learning of Haitian culture. Haiti lies at the crossroads of Modern Civilization and, perhaps more than any other corner in the Americas, it reflects the historical dynamics established by the forced meeting of three worlds and three races of people. Today, on the eve of her bicentennial, Haiti's image reflects the sum of all of our world's ills. Haitians have survived in a geopolitical environment that has been undeniably hostile to them for most of their history. Yet, they have, in the process, created a startlingly different way of life, a unique signature of Religion, Arts, Language, and above all a sense of identity deeply rooted in spirituality and collective remembrances. To study Haiti is to gain a remarkable insight into the nature of Man. Our objective is to facilitate this task by offering you some interesting windows on Haiti's culture. However, the real exploration begins when you go beyond those windows... The web site aims to provide a starting point for further contact and discovery. We hope that many will take advantage of this labor of love for Haiti. As such, I dedicate it to her friends and children, the painters and the poets, the researchers and the students, the drummers and the dancers, the musicians and the storytellers; to all participants in and contributors to the uplifting aspects of her culture; to the unsung heroes; to the makandals, the boukmans, the peraltes; to the marie-jeannes and the madam-saras; to the gwo-zoteys and the restaveks, the illiterate and the famished.

Figure from a painting by Prosper Pierrelouis HAITI IS A DRAMATIC COUNTRY in its terrain, history, and culture. In comparison with other countries in the Caribbean, Haiti is described in superlatives: it is the most rural in its settlement pattern, the poorest, and the most densely populated. It is also the only country in the region that was born of a successful slave rebellion, and it is the first modern black republic. Transportation and Communications , ch. 8). The weight of the past bore heavily on the daily lives of all Haitians in the 1980s. The country's legacy of slavery and French colonization had left a lasting imprint on the culture. In the past, members of the upper class cherished Franco-Haitian culture because the French language and manners separated them from the masses whom they wished to rule. At the same time, former slaves created a peasant culture, but always in the shadow of their urban superiors. Haiti's dual cultural heritage resulted in negative attitudes toward Haitian peasant life, particularly toward the Creole language, traditional marriages, and voodoo, the folk religion. The recent emergence of a middle class has only exacerbated the debate over what should be considered "true" Haiti. Data as of December 1989

What others say:
Richard Gillepsie from Towson University wrote a 32 chapters book-on-line about Toussatint Louverture last 5 years in Haiti. Click Here to Read the story. Excerpts form an article of the June 1993 issue of "Les Acajous", a newsletter published by ODL. The article of "Les Acajous" is based on an other article by Earl Caldwell on the New-York's Daily News a few years earlier: The phrase "Boat People" is a term used to degrade and dehumanize Haitians living in this country. Not so long ago, before modern travel, the Americans (who consider themselves true Americans) came to this country by boat. Like most Haitians, they were leaving poverty behind for the "land of opportunity". And like Haitians, they underwent the same perils encountered on the high seas for a better life, for the "promised land". Haitians should never lower their heads to this insult. Furthermore, we should teach our kids to be proud of their origin. Anyone using the term "Boat People" as an insult should be considered close-minded and ignorant of certain historical facts.
