Our guestbook is working!
GREETINGS!
TH Lady Elanor O' Rourke found this on a card that came with a pendant she recently purchased. She believe's that all of us in this Household will understand why she felt that this needed to be put up here. Never forget the power of the pack!
*THE WOLF PACK*
The Wolf pack is a symbol of Community. Wolves, united, can migrate, hunt, and sleep in groups. In their Unity, Wolves need not fear any natural enemy. They all help to raise the pups together.
Wolves also fight among themselves at times, reminding us that to live or work as a group, we need not give up our indviduality. Wolves rely on their speed and endurance to hunt. They have been known to run over thirty miles to tire their prey, and can bring down animals much larger than themselves. Like people, Wolves, united can never be defeated.
Welcome to the home of House Wolfstar!
For those of you who are wondering what a House Wolfstar is, Wolfstar is a mercenary house in the Kingdom of Ansteorra. Ansteorra is one of the Kingdoms of the Known World of the Society for Creative Anachronism(SCA). The SCA is a world-wide society of medieval recreators who meet on a weekly or monthly basis, dependent upon climate and inclination, to spend a weekend acting out the part of a personally created character based on a time and place from the past.

Soon after returning from the Persian Gulf war in 1991, U.S. veterans began complaining of strange symptoms: fatigue, joint pains, memory loss. The complaints were hard to dismiss after all, these soldiers had been in combat-ready condition when they were shipped east to drive Iraq's army from Kuwait. At first, the Pentagon denied that the syndrome existed, then asserted that it could have been caused by war-time chemical exposure. Although Iraq had repeatedly warned of its willingness to use chemical weapons, there was no hard evidence that it did. Nor could the incineration of Kuwait's oil fields have caused the problem, since many of the ill vets had not been exposed to the huge clouds of petro-fumes.

Gulf War is history, Marines warned
Troops told to prepare for a different conflict By Jeanette Steele
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER January 26, 2003 Over the past few weeks, Marines have gotten briefings about the mind-set of their potential enemy. And they have been coached on history and culture to avoid disturbing the peace in Kuwait, the U.S. ally that is hosting many of the U.S. troops massing in the Persian Gulf region. Reporters have been allowed to attend some recent briefings because the Marines see the briefings as positive publicity. The talks are often given by enlisted men, such as Robinson, who are trained to be expert on their topics. During his briefing, Robinson delivered some blunt instructions that might have made State Department diplomats wince. He also cautioned the Marines, who serve in a transportation and supply unit, that Iraq has used chemical weapons before and probably will have their unit in its cross hairs this time. During Iraq's 1980s war with neighboring Iran, it launched chemical attacks against supply convoys, knowing an army needs food and water to keep fighting.

The Gulf War
By Mitchell Bard
Since coming to power, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein had been a leader of the rejectionist Arab states and one of the most belligerent foes of Israel . On April 2, 1990, Saddam's rhetoric became more threatening: "I swear to God we will let our fire eat half of Israel if it tries to wage anything against Iraq." Saddam said his nation's chemical weapons capability was matched only by that of the United States and the Soviet Union, and that he would annihilate anyone who threatened Iraq with an atomic bomb by the "double chemical" (Reuters, April 2, 1990). Several days later, Saddam said that war with Israel would not end until all Israeli-held territory was restored to Arab hands. He added that Iraq could launch chemical weapons at Israel from several different sites (Reuters, April 18, 1990). The Iraqi leader also made the alarming disclosure that his commanders had the freedom to launch attacks against Israel without consulting the high command if Israel attacked Iraq. The head of the Iraqi Air Force subsequently said he had orders to strike Israel if the Jewish State launched a raid against Iraq or any other Arab country (UPI, April 22, 1990). On June 18, 1990, Saddam told an Islamic Conference meeting in Baghdad: "We will strike at [the Israelis] with all the arms in our possession if they attack Iraq or the Arabs." He declared "Palestine has been stolen," and exhorted the Arab world to "recover the usurped rights in Palestine and free Jerusalem from Zionist captivity" (Baghdad Domestic Service, June 18, 1990).

Middle Eastern History Persian Gulf War Related Category: Middle Eastern History Persian Gulf War or Gulf War, Hussein declared that the invasion was a response to overproduction of oil in Kuwait, which had cost Iraq over $14 million when oil prices fell. Saddam Hussein also accused Kuwait of illegally pumping oil from Iraq's Rumaila oil field. The UN Security Council called for Iraq to withdraw and subsequently embargoed most trade with Iraq. On Aug. 7, U.S. troops moved into Saudi Arabia to protect Saudi oil reserves. On Nov. 29, the UN set Jan. 15, 1991, as the deadline for a peaceful withdrawal of Iraqi troops from Kuwait. When Saddam Hussein refused to comply, Operation Desert Storm was launched on Jan. 18, 1991, under the leadership of U.S. Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf The U.S.-led coalition began a massive air war to destroy Iraq's forces and military and civil infrastructure. Iraq called for terrorist attacks against the coalition and launched Scud missiles at Israel (in an unsuccessful attempt to widen the war and break up the coalition) and at Saudi Arabia. The main coalition forces invaded Kuwait and S Iraq on Feb. 24 and, over the next four days, encircled and defeated the Iraqis and liberated Kuwait. When U.S. President George H. W. Bush declared a cease-fire on Feb. 28, most of the Iraqi forces in Kuwait had either surrendered or fled.

The story of Iraq
The land occupied by the modern state
of Iraq is among the most historic on Earth. Home to humanity's first civilization, Sumer, it has been the backdrop to thousands of years of momentous human events. What is currently Iraq resulted from the break-up of the Ottoman Empire after World War One. When France and Britain divvied up the Middle East, Britain got the "Fertile Crescent," the arc of land including today’s Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Egypt. The borders of these nations had no roots in history but were simply agreed upon by France and Britain. Like the nations formed out of the defunct Austro-Hungarian Empire in the same period, or the crumbling of other colonial empires 40 years later, this was to cause many problems. Initially the government of Iraq was a monarchy. Through the 1920s and 1930s, Iraq slowly gained more independence. There were many factions within the country competing for power and Iraq remained politically unstable. One thing generally agreed on, however, was dissatisfaction with the national borders that had been dictated by foreigners.

Economic causes of the Gulf War
The Prussian militarist Clausewitz declared that war was "nothing but the continuation of politics by other means" . He would have been nearer the truth if he had said that war was the continuation of economics by other means. Since the onset of capitalism five hundred years ago wars have been caused by conflicts of economic interest over sources of raw materials, trade routes, markets, investment outlets and strategic points and places to secure and protect these. The threatening war in the Middle East is no exception to this rule, and in fact strikingly confirms the socialist analysis of the cause of war. Oil and Empire British imperialism made Kuwait, which remained nominally part of the Ottoman Empire, a "protectorate" in 1899. This was done not for its oil resources, which nobody even suspected existed, but for its strategic position. At the time Imperial Germany, already squaring up to Britain in the inter-imperialist rivalry which eventually broke out as the First World War, was planning to build a railway that would extend from Europe through Turkey and Mesopotamia down to the Persian Gulf. This was the Berlin to Baghdad railway of history book fame and, if completed, would have represented an alternative and rival to the British-controlled Suez Canal as a trade route to and from the Indian Ocean and the Far East. Kuwait, a small port and pearl-fishing centre at the northern end of the Gulf ruled by a sheik called Al-Sabah, was the likely terminus for the German project. So it was "protected" by British imperialism, to thwart German imperialism.
