I don't really want to talk much about myself, so instead I decided to devote my home page to some of the things I like best: my pets! I have many pets, mostly guinea pigs and natal rats, and I try to have recent photos of my pets for all to see. I try to let each of my pets have their own page on this site. But that is not enough... I have been working on this website for many years, and I have added stuff like how to care for your pets, breeds, genetics, diseases, and so on. By now I must say that I have never found a site on the Internet with more information about guinea pigs, rats or mice than I have on this page.

Guinea Pigs:
Guinea Pigs make excellent pets as they have a quiet disposition and are easily handled. For some, they may be a little too shy and a bit noisy. Male guinea pigs must be kept singly. You can however keep females in groups of two to three in approriately spacious quarters. Guinea pigs are best bought when six-twelve weeks old, soon after weaning. When choosing your guinea pig a good one will be alert, active and inquisitive towards its handler, probabaly 'singing' or 'whistling' when picked up. It should be in good health and should run quickly.
Housing
A large old aquarium would make a good home for a pair of adults provided that regular outside exercise is given to them. A large outdoor pen , temporary or permanent, is useful in warmer weather. The home of a guinea pig should be interesting and allow various different activities for the pet. Pens on grass should be moved regularly to prevent fouling of the ground. Sudden changes in temperature and dampness can be dangerous for guinea pigs. Throughout the hutch spread a layer of softwood shavings (not sawdust). Put some hay also into the living quarters of the guinea pig for it to nest and burrow into.
Feeding
Like rabbits, Guinea Pigs are vegetarians, but they prefer food with a low fibre content and must have Vitamin C supplied to them in their diet. Meals should be at regular times. Never give pellets as the sole ingredient in their diet. Provide fresh water daily in large botles with metal-spouted canulae.

Before you get a Guinea Pig you should consider these points:
  • In the wild, guinea pigs live in family groups. You should therefore, keep two guinea pigs of the same sex rather than one. Are you willing to do this ?
Guinea pigs need feeding twice a day, and their hutches need daily tidying and a thorough clean each week. Are you prepared to do this?
All guinea pigs need daily exercise either in a safe, grassy area outside or in a specially made indoor pen. Will you remember to do this?
Do you know someone who will look after your guinea pigs when you go away on holiday?
Advice for Guinea pigs owners:
A good pet owner looks after his/her guinea pigs everyday. If you play with your guinea pig regularly, you will get to know its likes and dislikes and its usual behaviour. If you think that your guinea pig is off form or is not acting like its usual self you should consider calling a vet for advice or bringing your guinea pig to a vet. We recommend that if you own a pet you should buy a book on how to care for it properly. Alternatively you might be able to get a book in your local library.

Pets and Pet Care

Scientists have found that the simple act of petting a dog or cat can lower a person’s blood pressure. Here are some books and Web sites to help your patrons choose and care for a pet.

How to Care For Your Guinea Pig
Guinea pigs are very peaceful animals, with quite distinct personalities. Your guinea pig will come to recognize you and will call to you with a series of whistles and grunts. They will make sure to remind you to give them a treat every time they see you. Your guinea pig will need a large cage with room to move around. They may not appear athletic, but guinea pigs like to run around, and they are faster than you would think. He will need at least a 12"x24" cage. The bigger the cage, the better for your pet. The best cage is one that has a plastic tray underneath that can be emptied and cleaned. Do not keep a guinea pig in a wooden cage; he will chew through it. Line the bottom of the cage with pine shavings. You can mix in cat litter to help stop the urine odor. Guinea pigs have no natural self defense, so protect him from other pets and predators.

Diseases of Domestic Guinea Pigs (Library of Veterinary Practice) by V. C. G. Richardson A "must have" book for all cavy caretakers and companions. PAPERBACK Anatomy of the Guinea Pig by Gale Cooper, Alan L. Schiller No Review HARDCOVER Guinea Pigs Don't Talk by Laurie Myers, Cheryl Taylor (Illustrator), Laura Myers Lisa Rogers, a new girl in Mrs. Flowers' class, is eager to make friends. Seatmate Traci Walters seems like a good possibility, but two other students, Angel and Joe, make it clear they want nothing to do with Lisa. They embark on a series of pranks aimed at her, involving Bruiser and Squeaky, the class guinea pigs. Things escalate as Lisa and Traci carry out a few dirty tricks of their own, and the four land in big trouble with Mrs. Flowers. Finally, Lisa negotiates a truce acceptable to everyone, leaving open the possibility of future friendships. Myers handles typical childhood issues with a humorous touch, and her characters are believably drawn. This first chapter book, reminiscent of The Gadget War (1991), written by Myers' sister, Betsy Duffey, will appeal to readers looking for funny books or stories involving animals. Guinea pigs are attractive and lively. They make ideal pets for children , becoming very tame if regularly handled. Unlike rats and mice, they have no tail. They are not climbers, and if startled will simply retreat into their nest. They can live outdoors in a secure hutch, or indoors, and there is no unpleasant odour associated with them. There are lots of varieties, but the long-coated ones will need extra grooming care. Size: 0.7-1.8 kg (1.5-5.4 lb) Males are generally heavier than females. Lifespan: 5-6 years Living Together: Guinea pigs can usually be kept in small groups of the same sex, if they have been together from an early age. Males can sometimes be aggressive. They can be kept with rabbits if the hutch is fairly large, as in a small space the guinea pig could be accidentally injured or smothered by a large rabbit. Smaller breeds of rabbit are the best choice. Feeding : A good quality complete food should be offered. Guinea pigs have special requirements for vitamin C, so food intended for other rodents is not suitable for them. Extra greens such as dandelion and chickweed should also be provided on a daily basis. In the winter, broccoli can be used instead. Be careful, as some leaves can be poisonous. This includes buttercup, bindweed, and plants such as lupin. If in doubt, ask your vet for advice. A bran mash can be given regularly throughout the year. This should be removed the next day and the dish washed carefully before it is refilled. Fresh water should always be available, and a drinking bottle is ideal for this. If your pets have had an open water dish before, you may need to encourage them to use the bottle to start with. Wooden chews are also important to keep the teeth in trim, and these can be purchased from a pet shop.
