The Muses from Greek Mythology
Athena visits Apollo and the Muses
Bartholomeus Spranger (XVI cent.) The Muses are the Greek goddesses who preside over the arts and sciences and inspire those who excel at these pursuits. Daughters of Zeus , king of the gods, and Mnemosyne ("memory"), they were born at Pieria at the foot of Mount Olympus. Their nurse, Eupheme, raised them along with her son, Crotus the hunter, who was transported into the sky as Sagittarius upon his death. Their name (akin to the Latin mens and English mind ) denotes 'memory' or 'a reminder', since in the earliet times poets, having no books to read from, relied on their memories. The Romans identified the Muses with certain obscure Italian water-goddesses, the Camenae.
The original number of muses and their names varies in earlier times as their evolution blossomed in Greek mythology. At first, three muses were worshipped on Mount Helicon in Boeotia: Melete ("meditation"), Mneme ("memory"), and Aoede ("song"). Another three were worshipped at Delphi and their names represented the names of the strings of a lyre: Nete, Mese, and Hypate. Several other versions were worshipped until the Greeks finally established the nine muses in mythology as:

    7. Faithful Friend and Doting Lover
The strictures against an uncritical acceptance of the superficial conventionalism and innocence of the beautiful boy motif apply with equal force against an uncritical acceptance of the superficial and "purely virtuous" themes of the Renaissance friendship tradition. Nearly every praise of friendship in Renaissance literature, be it trite and stale or genuinely moving, allots a line or two for an allusion to the friendship of Achilles and Patroclus. Yet in the view of Shakespeare himself, the relationship between these two men was that between a bugger and his catamite. Thersites says to Patroclus in Troilus and Cressida , "Thou are thought to be Achilles' male varlet." Patroclus queries, "Male varlet, you rogue! What's that?" and Thersites answers, "Why, his masculine whore." The Renaissance friendship tradition two sharply differentiated philosophical sources - in Plato and Aristotle - and a number of contributing . The dullest and most often repeated cliché in friendship literature is the "catalogue of famous friends" that originates in the eighth fragment of Bion, in which he praises the men who have found mutual love: Achilles & Patroclus, Orestes & Pylades, and Theseus & Pirithous. Marsilio Ficino in his Commentary on Plato's

Ancient Greece Homer Sparta Athens ... Alexander the Great Greek Mythology The ancient Greeks were polytheistic. This means they believed in many gods. Writers and artists use the stories and symbols of Greek myths to this day. While we no longer view the myths as religion, many people still enjoy reading them. Today, most people who live in the Western Hemisphere believe in one god. People who believe in one god are monotheistic.
Myths are traditional stories. The Greeks used myths to explain things they did not understand. At first, myths were passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. Later, Greek poets created epic stories based on those legends. An epic is a long poem about great heroes and their deeds.
The Greek gods lived atop Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece. Zeus was the head of the family of gods. He ruled the sk
