About Salentino
Ancient Greece The arrival of winemaking in ancient Greece is undocumented. Many believe it was brought to Crete by Phoenician traders. It is also likely that it arrived from the north as well, via the land route from Asia Minor. The earliest evidence of winemaking in Greece is a stone foot press at Vathipetro, a Minoan villa on Crete, dated to 1600 BC. The sophistication of the site suggests that Minoan production of wine had been underway for some time. Decoded Linear B tablets from the Minoan site at Knossos in Crete revealed an advanced economy fueled by trade with Eastern cultures, including Egypt. Archaeological finds on the Greek mainland indicate a close connection with the Mycenaean culture. By the sudden end of the Minoan civilization shortly after 1500 BC, winemaking was probably common throughout mainland Greece and the Aegean.
The demise of the Mycenean culture around 1100 BC is believed to have resulted in a brief period of cultural and economic depression on the mainland. The gradual recovery of technical arts and the emergence of ironworking, there and on Crete, characterize a period from around 1050 BC to around 900 BC (Protogeometric or Sub-Mycenean) in which peoples from mainland areas and the Aegean islands also began to colonize parts of Asia Minor and the northern Aegean coast. Trade routes were reestablished, and during the period from 900-700 BC Greece underwent major cultural, political and economic transformations. During this time, urbanization commenced and written language

Across the shimmering water from the eastern coast of mainland Greece, lie the Sporades islands Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros. Here the visitor can unwind and sense the languid tempo of island Greece with its orchards, sea and green hills.
Climate Judging by the bronzed islanders, and by the annual sunshine records, a summer of sun and cloudless skies is no exception. April and May are fine, warm months with temperatures ranging from 55-75 degrees Fahrenheit. June, July and August are the warmest with temperatures reaching as high as 95 degrees Fahrenheit. September and October are both good months, warm with a clear atmosphere and temperatures up to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. In summer, the northerly wind of the Aegean Sea, the meltemi, gives the islands a briskness and clarity even greater than that of mainland Greece.

Geographically it belongs to Europe since it forms the most southerly extremity of the Balkan peninsula but it also has a special link with Europe through the small entity of the Ionian Islands (Zante, Ithaca, Corfu, Cephallonia, Lefkas and Paxi) which form a chain off Greece's western shores in the Ionian Sea.

Greece: Athens and the Mainland Eyewitness Guide

    Guide Rating -
Pre-trip planning or post-trip boasting, the is a fun, valuable reference. These visual guides show 3-D cutaway maps of major attractions, letting you explore the top attractions. Some might even feel they show almost too much, leaving less to discover at the site did you really need to know the color of the carpet before your visit? But the usefulness of these guides in planning, for example, an on-the-run visit to a museum just before closing time will make up for any lost surprises. And, believe me, the real 3-D Greece will have more than enough pleasant discoveries that can't be put in any guidebook. The Eyewitness Guides also include functional maps of major cities, and the Athens one is complete with a street index. This feature is omitted in other guidebooks, and greatly improves the usefulness of this guide.

Greek Weather The dominant condition of Greece's climate is the alternation between hot, dry summers and cold, damp winters typical of the Mediterranean. But considerable local variation results from elevation and distance from the sea. Generally, continental influences are felt farther north and in the center of the mainland. The main climatic regions of Greece are the mainland mountains, Attica (the southeasternmost part of the mainland) and the Aegean, the west including the Ionian Islands, and the continental northeast. In winter low-pressure systems reach Greece from the North Atlantic, bringing rain and moderating temperatures but also drawing cold winds from the eastern Balkans over Macedonia and Thrace as they pass into the Aegean Sea. The same low-pressure systems also draw warmer winds from the south, creating an average January temperature differential of 4° C between Thessaloniki (6° C) and Athens (10° C). Cyclonic depressions provide the lowlands of the west and the south with mild winters and little frost. Beginning in late fall and continuing through the winter, the Ionian Islands and the western mountains of the mainland receive abundant rain (snow at higher elevations) from the west, whereas the eastern mainland, shielded by the mountains, receives much less precipitation. Thus the average annual rainfall of Corfu off the west coast is 1,300 millimeters; that of Athens on the southeastern mainland is only 406 millimeters. In summer the influence of low-pressure systems is much less, allowing for hot, dry conditions and an average sea-level temperature of 27° C in July. Summer winds have a moderating effect along the coast, but very dry, hot winds have a parching effect that causes drought in the Aegean area. The Ionian and Aegean islands are especially warm in October and November. Elevation has an appreciable effect on temperature and precipitation at all latitudes, however. At higher elevations in the interior, some rainfall occurs year-round, and higher mountains in the southern Peloponnesus and on Crete are snowcapped for several months of the year. The mountains of Macedonia and Thrace have colder continental winters influenced by winds channeled through the river valleys from the north.
