6. Western Europe, Central and Eastern Europe- Trade and Financial Integration
While Western Europe, alongside the US, constitutes one of the richest and most internationally active economic areas in the world, Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) still only has a very limited role in the world economy. Foreign direct investment outflows from CEE countries are understandably low given the regions relative poverty (see Figure 1B) and in 1998 the CEE share of total world outflows only accounted for approximately .3%. Yet, foreign direct investment inflows also remain at relatively low levels (see Figure 1A) and in 1998 the CEE share of total world inflows only accounted for approximately 2.7% of total world inflows. In contrast, in 1998 Latin America and the Caribbean accounted for 11.1% of the world's total foreign direct investment inflows and Asia accounted for 13.2%. Only Africa had a smaller share than CEE at 1.2% of foreign direct investment inflows in 1998.

HeliExpo 1999 The Helicopter Association held its 51st Annual International Meeting and Exhibition, known as "Heli-Expo," in Dallas, Texas from February 21-23. Heli-Expo is the largest international showcase for helicopter products and services in the world. This year's exhibition showcased more than 500 companies, 80 helicopter displays and more than 12,000 attendees. The Office of Aerospace operated a booth during this convention, showcasing the services that the Office provides to U.S. companies and promoting the 1999 Paris Air Show and other aerospace trade events. As part of the promotional efforts for the Paris Air Show, which will take place in June 1999, office staff gathered business cards from interested U.S. companies to raffle a free space to two U.S. companies for the Aerospace Products Literature Center (APLC) at the upcoming Paris Air Show in June. (For information on the APLC, see page 3.) All of these business cards were placed in a bowl and our Director, Sally H. Bath, chose the winners: Aeronautical Accessories, Inc. and Aircraft Parts Intl.

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Greece is an import dependent economy, and as such, represents excellent marketing opportunities for U.S. goods, products, equipment, services and technology. This is especially true since U.S. suppliers are very highly regarded in Greece for superior quality and consistency. Moreover, there are no significant non-tariff barriers to U.S. exports. Nevertheless, the U.S. accounted for only a little over 4% of Greece's imports in 2000, which totaled about $28 1/2 billion, signaling plenty of room for expansion of U.S. business in the Greek market. In the year 2000, the U.S. enjoyed a $626 million trade surplus with Greece. The top U.S. exports were in aircraft and arms and machinery, and this is likely to continue as Greece maintains its military modernization program. Aside from defense and related contracts however, U.S. business can expect substantial success in connection with contracts and awards for implementing the 2004 Olympic Games, scheduled for Athens, as well as in the IT and Tourism Infrastructure Development sectors, and Greece's energy, medical, food processing and packaging, and franchising sectors, and construction and building products. Among agricultural products, the best U.S. prospects are in nursery products, planting seeds, tree nuts, wood products and frozen seafoods.
