Greece. Background information
Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories with Greek-speaking populations. Following the defeat of communist rebels in 1949, Greece joined NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. Democratic elections in 1974 and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy; Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992). Location: Southern Europe, bordering the Aegean Sea, Ionian Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea, between Albania and Turkey. Area total: 131,940 sq km

Delphi - Parnassos - Greece
Location Useful Phone Numbers The city of Delphi is spread out around the foot of Mount Parnassos, and lies majestically between two huge rocks, which were known in the ancient years as "Ihambias" and "Nafplias". The imagination of the ancient Greeks is visible all around this city, as it seemed to have developed further than reality would have allowed in the old times. This can be traced back to the actions of Pythia, who was the main priestess and lived permanently in the ancient temple of Delphi. She was the one, who under the influence of bay leaves and mystic fumes, was giving prophecies and future predictions, as well as explaining the meanings behind omens. There is evidence of having life in this region from onwards of the 14th century BC. From the 6th to the 4th Centuries BC, this city was the most important place in the Greek world, and this can be appreciated with the sacred area of Delphi being covered with unique and beautiful statues and structures. Drama and music would take place in the theatre, as well as athletic competitions and music shows taking place at the stadium.

History of the site I began to play Sensible Soccer many years ago, I believe it was 1994. It's a while since I started thinking about creating my SWOS Site. The problem was that there are already many SWOS Sites and most of them have the same things online. So what's the point making another one? I decided then to build a SWOS Site with a different approach. I won't put things online that you can find in other sites. There are already two more Greek Sites about Swos and another one from Cyprus. This is a special site. It contains pictures, statistics and info about Greek Football and I made it to have fun with! About me I'm 24 years old and I'm drummer of the heavy metal band, Blue Rose. As you will probably think, I'm listening to heavy metal. I'm also a big football fan and in the Greek Championship I'm a fan of AEK Athens. Have fan with the site

Back in the early 50's our grandparents opened the first taverna
in the area of Alykes, serving local "mezedes" & ouzo to all
the locals from the surounding villages that they were coming
to Alykes beach to enjoy the sun and the sea. Its cuzine
was stricly Greek and the menu small but tastefull.... In 1969 our parents had the brilliant idea of expanding the old taverna
and build a new building facing the beach, with a larger menu
and fresher ideas about running a restaurant. The second generation was in charge now.. The restaurant opened under the name "APHRODITE" in 1970.
Her own secret recipies made our customers number growing
year after year. Using only local fresh products such as olive oil
Those secret recipies and products is maybe the only thing that is
still the same 30 years later.. In the late 70's Alykes started being a tourist resort not only for the locals but for tourists coming from all over Europe.

: Greece - The earliest known prehistoric civilizations occupy the Aegean world. This period marks the rise and fall of the MINOAN and MYCENAEAN civilization. 2200 BCE : Greece - Indo-European invaders, speaking the earliest forms of Greek, enter the mainland of Greece, and the MYCENAEAN CIVILIZATION (named after the leading Greek city on the peninsula from 1200 BCE ) emerges. 1500 BCE : Greece - MINOAN CIVILIZATION (named after the Cretan ruler Minos) reaches its height with its central power in Knossos on the island of Crete. This culture is apparently more female-oriented and peaceful than others at the time. 1400 BCE : Greece - MYCENAEAN CIVILIZATION replaces MINOAN CIVILIZATION after the destruction of Knossos. Bronze weapons, war-scenes on art, Cyclopean defence walls, and the fact that male warriors were buried with their weapons provide evidence for the claim that the Mycenaeans were militaristic. The horse-drawn chariot emerges around this time. The Mycenaeans dominate the Aegean world for about 200 years. 1250 BCE : Greece - Though this is disputed, some scholars believe that the

What is the Ancient World? Greece, Rome, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Sumer, Nubia, Persia, Byzantium, Turkey? Or is it Assyrians, Chaldeans, Hebrews, Hittites, Akkadians, Etruscans, Minoans? Is it Alexander, Plato, Virgil, Socrates, Hammurabi, Aristotle, Nefertiti, the Pharaohs, Emperors, Caesar, Cleopatra, Sargon, Akhenaton, the Black Athena, Homer? Or is it the dinosaurs, Stonehenge, hunters, slaves, women, rulers, soldiers, or the Iliad, the Aeneid, the Odyssey, the Olympics? Is it found in the ruins, temples, forums, pyramids or in the remnants of ordinary life? Explore through this Web Book and the Online College Course. Ancient Civilization did not begin in what we think of as the West. It did not start in Paris or Berlin or London or Prague or Brussels or Stockholm. It grew out of the Mediterranean breezes, the sun and desert of Northern Africa, the Persian and West Asian lands. To study Ancient Civilization is to travel - across parts of Africa, southern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia to India. It is a linking voyage, not a reducing trip. It CONNECTS peoples, ideas, patterns, developments, organizations, wars, religions, art, architecture, food and drink. It is a human endeavor about a human story.

Fairbanks's Introduction
Anaximandros of Miletos was a companion or pupil of Thales. According to Apollodoros he was born in the second or third year of the forty-second Olympiad (611-610B.C.). Of his life little is known; Zeller infers from the statement of Aelian (V.H. iii. 17) to the effect that he led the Milesian colony into Apollonia, that he was a man of influence in Miletos. He was a student of geography and astronomy; and various inventions, such as the sundial, are attributed to him. His book, which was referred to as the first philosophical treatise in Greece, may not have received the title "GREEK" until after his death. It soon became rare, and Simplicius does not seem to have had access to it.
