This is because it is one of the smaller countries in the northern hemisphere and is surrounded by bunches of large and small islands. The Geography of Greece From Mr. MacIntyre’s notes. Greece can be found on the southern projection of the Balkan Peninsula. It is about the same size as Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, combined. Greece as a region has very poor land. Limestone absorbs rainfall and will not hold topsoil. Less than one third of the country can be cultivated. Grain, wine, and oil (olive) were the main products. The rest of Greece is covered with scrub vegetation. The main meal of most early Greeks was porridge. The country was fit for little more than goat and sheep raising. Herodotus said that “Hellas and Poverty have always been foster-sisters. Poor vegetation, lack of natural resources, a harsh geography and the difficulty of overland communication combined to make the growth of large states difficult. The Saronic and Corinthian Gulfs almost cut Greece in half. Areas such as The Isthmus of Corinth were strategic-where land and sea routes meet. It is said that though the land divided the Greeks, the sea united them. Most settlements were on the coastline, not unlike our own Maritimes.

Later, several cities in the Peloponnesus gained power this civilization was called Mycenean . Around 800 BC small farming communities became organized into larger city-states, called a "polis." As their population grew, the Greeks established colonies around the Mediterranean, from southern Italy to the Black Sea.
