Museums and Galleries

Always Check Directly with Museums for Updated Information
Always telephone first to check if the museum is still showing examples of dress or accessories or textiles. Galleries are updated sometimes to improve conservation conditions. Also check days and times of opening. Some museums close when you least expect it such as on a Friday. Many venues have internet sites with information on opening hours and fees. Some venues charge an entrance fee, but some publicly owned venues in the UK now have free entrance once again.
A Note on Footwear
If you wear heels I suggest you take a pair of low flatter shoes or check beforehand that the venue will let you in if they are preserving original wooden floors. All National Trust properties like the base of a shoe heel to be at least about 3 cm square. I was once refused entry because of wearing a heel deemed too damaging, luckily I had a spare pair of flat sandals in the car and soon caught up with my group. Some of these museums have direct web links and others are reviewed better on a secondary site. If you do find any broken links or changes of information please write to me at the email address in the foooter.

Prehistoric Britain As there is no written evidence available, information about the earliest settlers in Britain is minimal. The traces of domestic life that have been found indicate that the people were largely nomadic and stayed in caves for shelter. They also built makeshift huts. Archaeological digs have uncovered pits, hearths, tools and post-holes dating from around 6000 BC. The remains of animals long extinct in the UK such as mammoth, lion, woolly rhinoceros, hyena, bear and wolf have also been found in the rubbish heaps of caves known to have been occupied. Few Neolithic settlements survive today. The most impressive are to be found at

Great Britain II
The most travelled racing yacht in history - six times around the World
Brief Foreword
Welcome to this entirely unofficial history of the yacht launched as Great Britain II , which has sailed the world under the names Norsk Data GB United Friendly With Integrity and currently Whitbread Heritage I fell in love with the yacht when she was moored in Newcastle at the start of a Tall Ships Race. In 1990 she came to Liverpool as With Integrity . I signed on as paying crew from Preston to Troon; Leith to Sunderland; and Plymouth to Puerto Colon, Tenerife. Preston to Troon was my first experience of any yacht over forty feet. The jump was dramatic. Leith to Sunderland was the sailing experience of a lifetime. A near-gale offshore wind gave that peculiar East Coast phenomenon of strong winds and strangely flat water. It was an awesome white-sail reach all the way. One hundred and thirty five miles in under twelve hours. Imagine using a 65 - 1 winch to grind down a reef in the mainsail. For'ard of the mast the deck is vibrating with the power of the rig. On the plane there are walls of white water rising on either side of the hull. Oh yes, and we are short crewed also. The next year I crewed her on a delivery from Bristol - Cardiff - Plymouth - Ocean Village. Overall I logged around 2,500 miles. That is a significant proportion of my total sea miles. For

Beeston Castle, Cheshire This is the 'newest' version of Grobius Shortling's web page Castles, Stone Circles, and Ancient Monuments , which was originally posted on the Internet in late 1996. As stated there, every (well, almost every) site mentioned on these pages has been visited by the author and judged from experience. Statements of fact or opinion may be wrong or wrong-headed, but they are honestly given. The castles are grouped by country on separate web pages; there are also some individual places web pages. All photographs were taken by the author, some as early as 1959 (with my Brownie). The new domain (BritCastles.Com) was set up with too much glitzy Java and Javascript stuff that is distracting and confuses many older browsers, so I have returned to the old (more or less) castles index page. If you want to use the fancy stuff and it really does have some great features click
