http://lutheran.org.uk/a-history.htm
The history of Lutherans in Britain Lutherans take their name from Martin Luther, an Augustinian monk and theologian in 16th century Germany. He believed that the church was ignoring or contradicting important teachings of Christ, and that it had become corrupt as an institution. Because his convictions were deeply felt, in 1517 he published 95 theses for discussion and debate within the church. His aim was to reform the church so that Christ's gospel was restored to the central position in the church's life and teaching. Luther did not want to leave the church, but the church's leadership regarded his views as disturbing and dangerous. In 1520 Luther was excommunicated. Luther, however, continued to proclaim his views in his preaching, teaching and writing, and he was supported by a growing number of people, including many clergy and secular rulers. In a short time large areas of Germany became 'Lutheran', and 'Lutheranism' took root in other European countries and in Scandinavia. The Lutheran Church was the first church to grow out of the Reformation movement. The Reformation was kindled by Luther's 95 theses and rapidly spread throughout Western Europe, influencing also the church in Britain at the time of Henry VIII.

Medical Heritage of Great Britain Over the centuries, disease and mankind's efforts to be rid of it have left a tangible mark on the landscape - what one might call the archaeology of medicine. These historical artifacts have been largely neglected and with the rapid changes in medical care which characterise contemporary society, old established institutions are being closed and their buildings abandoned. Derelict hospital buildings are now a familiar part of the British urban landscape. Some are rapidly reduced to rubble whilst others suffer a less ignominious fate by undergoing an architectural metamorphosis into supermarkets, hotels and residential developments. General practitioners increasingly work within purpose built premises. The forerunners of such buildings are the 19th century dispensaries, some of which survive and have been adapted to other purposes. There are now very few examples of old established doctors' surgeries which are still providing a service in their original setting. A few early surgeries have been rebuilt in museum or heritage settings. A few working pharmacies still have good collections of jars and other ancient paraphernalia whilst others have been dismantled and reassembled in museums and heritage theme parks.

The Early History of the Border Collie Club of Gt. Britain by Marion Hopkinson, formerly (Leigh) September 1972 saw the nucleus of what has now become a wonderfully successful Breed Club. The instigation of this group was caused by the Kennel Club refusing to register my very nicely bred Border Collie bitch on the Obedience register as anything other than "working sheepdog". I was quite annoyed to say the least, and originally the first six of our group banded together with some "high falluting" notion that the breed ought to be recognised. After all, it is a British dog! We became 'The Border Collie Enthusiasts Club' - which said it all! We promoted our cause through jumble sales, raffles and coffee mornings held at my home, giving the proceeds to Guide Dogs but collecting support on the way. In 1973 we had our first "large" event - a Sponsored Dog Sit of Border Collies which looked very impressive to our local public onlookers. Harry Glover gave us wonderful support and lots of coverage in his column in Our Dogs, this proved to be a great turning point. He steered both me and the Club through the various procedures and his encouragement was never ending.

ORIGINS OF THE CARMELITES
The Carmelite Order takes its name from Mount Carmel in the Holy Land (Israel) and traces its origins back to the ancient hermits living on that mountain. There in the twelfth century were to be found a group of hermits, mostly former crusaders and pilgrims, calling themselves the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and striving to live, in the spirit of the prophet Elijah , a life of solitude and prayer. Standing always before the Living God on behalf of His people, and totally dedicated to His worship and glory, these hermits had heard the call of Jesus Christ to leave everything and to follow him. From its very beginning the Order of Carmel always had a special love and veneration for Mary, the Mother of Jesus. She is the Mother and Patroness of all Carmelites and the scapular which they wear as part of their habit is a sign of their dedication to her and a reliance on her protection. They see in Mary one who, in her simplicity, was totally open and receptive to God's action and took her as their model and sister in their search for God. They also took their inspiration from the prophet Elijah who was a man on fire with love of God. His basic message was

The Soviet invasion put paid to any chance of maintains the Romanian bridgehead. The Polish President, Government and Supreme GHQ were forced to cross the border into allied Romania, with the aim of reaching France and from there continuing the war against the two invaders. The German losses were: 16,000 killed, 32,000 wounded, 674 tanks, 319 armoured trucks, 195 guns and mortars, 6,046 trucks and 5,538 motor-cycles were destroyed or badly damaged.
