In addition to being written in a lyrical prose, it offers a much needed corrective to the withering, and unfair, historical portrait that Grant has been stuck with. Let's face it, here's what most of us know about Grant: he didn't do much at West Point, was a failure in business, drank his way through the Civil War, winning only because he was willing to kill his own soldiers, oversaw one of the most corrupt Presidential administrations ever and died. The most important previous biography, William McFeely's Pulitzer Prizewinning Grant (1981), took a sufficiently negative view of Grant that it did little to change, and even reinforced, these received truths. Like almost all misrepresentations in History, there are kernels of truth in the portrait, but it leaves out much and Perret is able to convincingly challenge much of the rest of it.

Ulysses S. Grant rose to command all the Federal armies in the Civil War and lead
them to victory. He was respected so much that he went on to be president of the United
States for two terms. His time of glory didn't last forever though, he developed cancer and
died bankrupt.
Ulysses Hiram Grant was born April 27, 1822, in a two room frame house
at Point Pleasant, Ohio(Ulysses S. Grant 1). His father, Jesse Root Grant, was foreman in
a tannery and a farmer. His mother, Hannah Simpson Grant, was a hard working frontier
woman. When Ulysses was a year old, the family moved to Georgetown. There his father
bought a farm, built a house, and set up his own tannery. Jesse and Hannah had five more
children there, two boys and three girls(Ulysses S. Grant 1). Grant love horses and learned to manage them at an early age. When he was seven or eight he could drive a team and began hauling all the wood used in the house and shops. From that point on until he reached seventeen, Grant did all the work done with horses;

President Ulysses S. Grant
He's not a Lost Cause anymore.

The Good Man theory of history has supplanted the Great Man theory, and the latest beneficiary is President Ulysses S. Grant. In the Good Man theory, presidents are judged as much by their private character as their public actions. So, LBJ is impugned because his laudable civil rights accomplishments were driven by ambition more than compassion and because he treated some blacks shabbily within his inner circle. Likewise, JFK is maligned for his extramarital affairs, and Thomas Jefferson is tarnished by his likely affair with Sally Hemings. In place of these figures, Good Man theorists elevate the pure of heart, men who possessed character and dignity. Men like John Adams, whom David McCullough lionized as a decent, honorable man who was faithful to his wife and refreshingly blunt. Or Harry Truman, whom David McCullough lionized as a decent, honorable man who was faithful to his wife and refreshingly blunt. Or Ulysses S. Grant, whom David McCullough hasn't yet lionized as a decent, honorable man who was faithful to his wife and refreshingly blunt. President Grant has no need for McCullough, though. The nation is in the midst of an astonishing Grant boom, culminating in a two-part PBS

When he was at the US Military Academy at West Point, someone called him Ulysses Simpson Grant by mistake, Grant liked that so much that he didn’t bother to correct it. Even though he was a career soldier, he hated guns and didn’t even like to hunt. Ulysses married Julia Dent in 1844. They had four children. Julia’s father was against the marriage because he didn’t want his daughter to marry a soldier.” On Line Lesson Plans: Ulysses Grant from TeacherVision

    Grant Home - Galena
On August 18, 1865, Galena celebrated the return of its Civil War hero General Ulysses S. Grant. Following a jubilant procession, much flag waving, and speeches, a group of Galena citizens presented the General with a handsomely furnished house on Bouthillier Street. The house is managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency as the U.S. Grant Home State Historic Site. On August 18, 1865, Galena greeted Grant with a grand celebration. A "grand triumphal arch" spanned Main Street, and a holiday atmosphere prevailed with a jubilant procession, speeches, and evening fireworks. Julia Grant recalled that "there was a tremendous and enthusiastic outpouring of people to welcome him....After a glorious triumphal ride around the hills and valleys, so brilliant with smiles and flowers, we were conducted to a lovely villa exquisitely furnished with everything good taste could desire."
    The Grant Home
The brick house, which was designed by William Dennison, had been constructed in 1860 for former City Clerk Alexander J. Jackson. Thomas B. Hughlett, on behalf of only a small group of local Republicans, purchased the house for $2,500 in June 1865 and presented it to Grant two months later. The house is typical of the Italianate Bracketed style, which is characterized by well-defined rectilinear shapes, projecting eaves supported by brackets, low-pitched roof, and balustraded balconies over covered porches.

Fast Fact: Ulysses S. Grant came to the Presidency a great military hero. Biography: Late in the administration of Andrew Johnson, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant quarreled with the President and aligned himself with the Radical Republicans. He was, as the symbol of Union victory during the Civil War, their logical candidate for President in 1868. When he was elected, the American people hoped for an end to turmoil. Grant provided neither vigor nor reform. Looking to Congress for direction, he seemed bewildered. One visitor to the White House noted "a puzzled pathos, as of a man with a problem before him of which he does not understand the terms." Born in 1822, Grant was the son of an Ohio tanner. He went to West Point rather against his will and graduated in the middle of his class. In the Mexican War he fought under Gen. Zachary Taylor. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Grant was working in his father's leather store in Galena, Illinois. He was appointed by the Governor to command an unruly volunteer regiment. Grant whipped it into shape and by September 1861 he had

The Ulysses S. Grant Homepage illuminates a figure profoundly misunderstood in history and in popular culture. Often portrayed as a slovenly drunkard, Grant was actually a modest and moral man, uncommonly devoted to his wife and children. Possessing a keen and understated sense of humor, his droll wit made him something of a raconteur with his friends. Grant was an outstanding military figure and the savior of the Union during the Civil War, as well as the 18th President of the United States from 1869-77. He was an author of unusual ability and his Memoirs are widely regarded as one of the great books written in the English language. He was also a complex individual with uncommon virtues. We invite you to explore Ulysses S. Grant as a General of incomparable skill, whose abilities are still misunderstood or underrated. His accomplishments and courage were rare, his personal integrity unmatched. The information here will start you on an odyssey in discovering Grant as a General, as a human being and as a great American.

He was born on March 23, 1823, in New York City and in 1836 moved with his family to Indiana, where he served in minor political offices and began a career as a journalist. In 1845 he purchased the South Bend Free Press, renamed it the St. Joseph Valley Register, and turned it into the leading organ of WHIG politics in northern Indiana. He was defeated for CONGRESS on the Whig ticket in 1850. Colfax helped establish the new REPUBLICAN PARTY and in 1854 was elected to the U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES . Although his service was not distinguished, he became Speaker of the House in 1863 and continued in that capacity until he left the House in 1869. After the Civil War his liberal ideas on black suffrage commended him to Radical Republican leaders, who nominated him for VICE PRESIDENT in 1868. His candidacy contributed little to the electoral victory of his running mate, Gen. Ulysses S. GRANT . The party failed to renominate Colfax in 1872. William E. Derby
