Term 1845 to 1849
  • Through a compromise with the British over a northern border, Polk managed to gain the territory which now make up Washington and Oregon. This made Polk the first president to run the country extending from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was during President Polk’s term in 1845 that the abolitionist and escaped slave Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography, endangering his own freedom by doing so. President Polk believed that the United States had a "manifest destiny" to expand. His attempts to gain more of Texas, New Mexico, and California led to the Mexican War. The invention of the revolver by Samuel Colt helped the U.S. to win this war and gain five hundred thousand square miles of land. Polk had promised to serve only one term in office. True to his word he retired at the end of his term. He died only three months after

Ulysses S. Grant : Soldier President
Author Info: Geoffrey Perret
This is one of the very best biographies that I have ever read. In addition to being written in a lyrical prose, it offers a much needed corrective to the withering, and unfair, historical portrait that Grant has been stuck with. Let's face it, here's what most of us know about Grant: he didn't do much at West Point, was a failure in business, drank his way through the Civil War, winning only because he was willing to kill his own soldiers, oversaw one of the most corrupt Presidential administrations ever and died. The most important previous biography, William McFeely's Pulitzer Prizewinning Grant (1981), took a sufficiently negative view of Grant that it did little to change, and even reinforced, these received truths. Like almost all misrepresentations in History, there are kernels of truth in the portrait, but it leaves out much and Perret is able to convincingly challenge much of the rest of it. Missing from that portrayal are Grant's fundamental decency as a man, his exemplary service in the Mexican War, his genuine strategic insight and at times nearly prophetic foresight (as when he offered to have a Cabinet member put his personal wealth in a blind trust), and his authorship of perhaps the best book written by a U. S. President (only Teddy Roosevelt can really challenge for the title), one of the great books of the 19th Century, his Personal Memoirs. Perret gives each of these the full treatment that it deserves and Grant's exceptional character and his control over his emotions and ego run like a leit motif throughout the book.

Who was the stupidest U.S. president?
22-Jun-2001 Dear Cecil: I understand that Thomas Jefferson was our smartest president. Who was our stupidest? Second stupidest? A related pair of questions: Did Yale not have an admissions department in the 1960s? If it did, doesn't it owe the country an apology? Chris Lamb the elder, Baltimore Dear Cecil:: I realize there's probably no way the following can be determined with utter certainty. But in the best judgment of presidential scholars, have any of our chief executivesin addition to Ulysses S. Grant and George W. Bush, I meanbeen alcoholics? David English, Somerville, Massachusetts Cecil replies: I get the feeling you guys are trying to make a point here. But this is no time to be coy. Let's put the question bluntly: Is George W. Bush the stupidest person ever to serve as U.S. president? If not, who is? And isn't he a drunk besides? It's all the fault of those goddamn Republicans on the Supreme Court. Why, I oughta . . . There, there. Let's take this one step at a time.

[Editor's Notes: US Grant was the fourth 19th century president to visit Portsmouth after James Monroe James K Polk and NH-born Franklin Pierce . After the Civil War, locals were sharply divided on the presidency of Ulysses S Grant (1822-1885). Was the 18th president a drunken dullard or a capable Reconstructionist leader? That depends on which Portsmouth newspaper one read when Grant breezed through town in a luxurious Pullman car with 200 members of his entourage. A Civil War hero, General Grant had almost been with Lincoln that fateful night at Ford's Theater . Instead he went on to become a two-term president, defeating NH notable Horace Greeley in his second term. Grant's famous tomb in New York City is the largest mausoleum in the country and, as the links below show, Grant still has a large devout following among history buffs. Grant's latest fictional incarnation was played by actor Kevin Kline in the movie version of "Wild, Wild, West." The film, like most of Grant's presidency, was not a hit with most critics. JDR] As is still often the case, presidential visits to Portsmouth, NH are just "whistle stops" as the chief executive moves on into Maine from the nation's capital. President George Bush used Portsmouth's military airfield as his own landing spot for regular visits to nearby Kennebunkport, Maine. And so it was back in 1871 when President Ulysses S. Grant zipped through.

America's 18th president Ulysses S. Grant was elected on his fame as the commander who had led the Union to victory during the Civil War. Grant long held the record for being the youngest man elected to the Oval Office, inaugurated at the age of 46. Grant's administration was scarred by scandal. Grant died at the age of 63 on July 23rd, 1885. Born on April 27th, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio, Hiram Ulysses Grant Grant's West Point instructors and peers often criticized his sloppiness and perpetual slouch and lack of graces which some speculated was deliberate, as Grant maintained that he was enrolled against his will. Grant showed small interest in any of the military academy curriculum other than mathematics and horsemanship, and graduated solidly in the lower half of his class in 1843, admitting his greatest accomplishments for his 4 years were growing more than 6 inches and reading many good books. Assigned as a brevet lieutenant to an infantry garrison outside of St. Louis, Grant was brought into St. Louis social circles through a former classmate, Frederick Dent, whose family was among the region's elite plantation clans. Grant was introduced to Dent's younger sister Julia Boggs Dent,
