Students will understand the following:
The current American system of government at the national level both resembles and differs from the system of government in Rome from about 510 to 264 B.C. Ancient Rome experienced several forms of government. For this lesson, you will need: History and government textbooks Encyclopedias Because the terms republic and democracy have multiple meanings (some overlapping, some diametrically opposed), this lesson avoids both words and simply suggests that you ask students to write reports in which they compare and contrast the Roman system of government during the period 510-264 B.C. with the system of government currently in practice at the national level in the United States. Direct students to do research and take notes to help them define and otherwise explain the following terms related to the form of government in place in Rome during the period under examination:
  • Citizen Plebeian Patrician

Introduction
H ere, we will examine how two popular word processors check for grammar and usage errors. We will compare Word and WordPerfect for their ability to find and identify the twenty most frequent errors (For more information on these errors, see Twenty Common Usage Errors .) Below is a listing of the twenty most frequent usage problems found in a corpus of 3000 college essays (Robert J. Connors and Andrea A. Lunsford. "Frequency of Formal Errors in Current College Writing, or Ma and Pa Kettle Do Research," The St. Martin's Guide to Teaching Writing 2nd ed. Ed. Robert Connors and Cheryl Glenn. New York: St. Martin's, 1992, 398). We will look at those problems together, examine how well the software could identify and correct those problems, and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of grammar checking programs.
The data
E ach error is identified in the heading and an example of the error follows, sometimes with multiple instances of each error in a single example.

http://www.jeanweber.com/about/grammar2.htm
Break out of the grammar trap:
Distinguish between essential and nonessential rules of grammar, punctuation, and usage
How much attention should technical communicators pay to formal rules of grammar, punctuation, and usage? Does incorrect grammar, punctuation, or usage detract from the value and usability of your group’s publications? Does your audience care, or even notice, if formal rules are broken?
Why have rules?
Grammar is the arrangement, relationships, and functions of words and the ways they are put together to form phrases, clauses or sentences. Punctuation marks are signals that help readers to understand the ideas in a passage and read more quickly and efficiently. Rules of grammar, punctuation, and usage can be essential or nonessential—or even fake! Writers and editors need to pay attention to the essential issues, but can spend less time on nonessential issues—particularly in the face of tight deadlines—and they can safely ignore the fake issues. Essential rules are those that are necessary for clear, unambiguous communication.
