Grammar and Its Teaching: Challenging the Myths
Diane Larsen-Freeman, School for International Training (VT)
Grammar is often misunderstood in the language teaching field. The misconception lies in the view that grammar is a collection of arbitrary rules about static structures in the language. Further questionable claims are that the structures do not have to be taught, learners will acquire them on their own, or if the structures are taught, the lessons that ensue will be boring. Consequently, communicative and proficiency-based teaching approaches sometimes unduly limit grammar instruction. Of the many claims about grammar that deserve to be called myths, this digest will challenge ten.
    1. Grammar is acquired naturally; it need not be taught.
It is true that some learners acquire second language grammar naturally without instruction. For example, there are immigrants to the United States who acquire proficiency in English on their own. This is especially true of young immigrants. However, this is not true for all learners. Among the same immigrant groups are learners who may achieve a degree of proficiency, but whose English is far from accurate. A more important question may be whether it is possible with instruction to help learners who cannot achieve accuracy in English on their own. With regard to whether instruction can help learners acquire grammar they would not have learned on their own, some research, although not unequivocal, points to the value of form-focused instruction to improve learners' accuracy over what normally transpires when there is no focus on form (see Larsen-Freeman, 1995).

83. Grammar
But, What about grammar? We teach grammar informally in many ways. We shouldteach grammar incidentally as our children copy, dictate, and write.
http://members.aol.com/PennyGar/grammar.html
After a Charlotte Mason workshop at a local home school convention, a sincere and concerned mother asked, "What about grammar? Children need to know grammar (adverbs, nouns, and so forth) in order to construct a good sentence." Much of the workshop had discussed copy work, dictation, and narration, but grammar had not been mentioned. Luckily, I was not the instructor so no one noticed the incredulous look on my face or my hand as it reached up to close my dropped jaw. The instructors answered very tactfully. But let's look at this question logically: What about grammar? Is it possible to write well without a thorough, formal knowledge of grammar? First, we need a definition of writing. What is writing? I'm bored silly when I hear a definition read during a talk so I'm not even going to bother to use a dictionary. Instead, we'll use our own minds to come up with an answer. What is writing? Writing is words, thoughts, speech put down on paper. So, in this unofficial definition, writing is another form of speech.

Good Grief, It's Grammar Time!
Are grumbles all you hear when teaching grammar? Try a fresh approach a few new "hooks" your students will remember and check out a bunch of grammar sites on the Internet that will placate even the loudest grammar grumblers! Grammar! Can't live with it; can't live without it… As an English teacher in a middle school, it is incumbent on me to teach that most dreaded of subjects. But I've found that there ARE ways to make it a little less odious. Trying to humanize grammar as much as possible, I give students "hooks" to help them remember the rules. Let me share a few with you.
  • When I teach the progressive tense, I spin a tale about a very progressive Asian family on my block, the ING family. All in this family have the same last name. There is the dad, workING, the mom, inventING, and the children, learnING and studyING. The progressive family includes the present progressive, is or are studyING, and the past progressive, was or were studyING.
  • When I teach the perfect tense, I tell my class about my husband who, fortuitously, is named Ed. I spin a tale about a perfect person I know who is named ED, and that all in this family also have the same last name. The dad's name is workED, the mom inventED, and the children learnED and studiED. The perfect family includes the present perfect, have or has workED, and the past perfect tense, had workED. Then we go on to discuss "dysfunctional families," the irregular verbs.

90. Why Grammar Should Be Taught To Children

“Why grammar? It stifles creativity!”
Over the years that question has been hurled at me many times – sometimes gently, but more often vehemently. My answer has always been the same “Because grammar is the technique of English”.
During the late 1960’s and the early 1970’s, education, influenced by the social changes of the 60’s went through a period where the teaching of grammar was thought to be stifling to creativity. Often I was made to feel like a dinosaur for teaching grammar. Oddly enough, much of the criticism came from colleagues who held master’s degrees. I remember saying on more than one occasion, “It is easy for you to say but you already have grammar skills or you wouldn’t have been able to write a master’s thesis. Now, you want to deny these same skills to present and future students. I am not against progress in education but, in the heat of the excitement of making changes, we must be very sure that what we consider to be progression is not regression, or even
suppression, in disguise.” I never wavered; I continued to teach grammar.

The role of grammar in communicative language teaching
Dr. James F. Lee
Indiana University
Dr. James F. Lee is Associate Professor of Spanish in the department of Spanish and Portuguese at Indiana University. He serves as Director of both the Spanish Language Instruction and MA and PhD programs in Hispanic Linguistics. He has published quite widely in the areas of second language reading instruction. He has co-authored several language textbooks. With Bill VanPatten, he wrote Making Communicative Language Teaching Happen and co-edits the McGraw-Hill Second Language Professional Series. His new book, "Tasks and Communicating in Language Classrooms, " will be published next year as will a co-edited volume with Albert Valdman, "Form and Meaning, Multiple Perspectives." "Steve Krashen and Tracy Terrell long ago brought to our professional attention the notion of comprehensible input. Although comprehensible input alone is not sufficient to cause second language acquisition, it is an absolutely necessary ingredient. Learners need to be exposed to the target language. We still talk about comprehensible input, but the discussion has also come to include talk of interactionally modified input as well as structured input. We talk about these other types of input because we have come to realize that in communicative language teaching, the question is NOT, Should we or shouldn't we teach grammar? But rather, HOW should we teach grammar? WHEN should we teach grammar? WHAT grammar should we teach?
