    Teach Yourself to Read Chaucer
    Lesson 5: Chaucer's Grammar
Middle English grammar is very much like our own. Except for a few unfamiliar forms, it offers few problems to the beginning reader, and what follows is therefore a very brief treatment of a few matters that may prove difficult in a first reading. Advanced students may wish to consult the section on Language in The Riverside Chaucer , pp.xxxiv-xlii, or The Canterbury Tales Complete , pp.xxix-xxxvi). A more extended treatment is also available in the section on Language on the Harvard Geoffrey Chaucer Page (once there click on "Grammar" in the upper left corner and use the back button to return to this page.) These resources should prove helpful to students whose primary interest is in the language, and they will prove interesting at a later stage of your study (when you are beginning to feel comfortable with Chaucer's language). Right now, all one needs is a brief treatment of the inflections.
    Nouns
Middle English nouns have the same inflections as modern English Nominative: freend ("friend"), Possessive:

(To go directly to Index of Lessons click here Introduction The best way to learn to read Chaucer's Middle English is to enroll in a course with a good and enthusiastic teacher (as most teachers of Chaucer are). Though students enrolled in Chaucer courses may find some parts of this page useful, it is intended primarily for those who, for a variety of reasons, cannot take such a course but nevertheless want to increase their enjoyment of Chaucer's works. The aim of this page is to provide the user with the means to learn to pronounce Chaucer's English and to acquire an elementary knowledge of Chaucer's grammar and vocabulary. It does not offer much on matters of style and versification and has almost nothing on the literary qualities of Chaucer's work. The user who works conscientiously through these materials should be ready to study such matters on his or her own (beginning with the materials on the Harvard Geoffrey Chaucer Website, and exploring other sources both on and off the Web). It is assumed that the user of the page has a printed text of The Canterbury Tales. There are texts on line, but none with the quality one finds in print (a printed edition, with a good glossary and notes, remains the most effective form of hypertext). The exercises on this page assume that the user has a copy of either the

On Grammar Exercises to Teach Speaking and Writing
NCTE Annual Business Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Background
This resolution was prompted by the continuing use of repetitive grammar drills and exercises in the teaching of English in many schools. Proposers pointed out that ample evidence from 50 years of research has shown the teaching of grammar in isolation does not lead to improvement in students' speaking and writing, and that in fact, it hinders development of students' oral and written language. Be it therefore Resolution
Resolved, that the National Council of Teachers of English affirm the position that the use of isolated grammar and usage exercises not supported by theory and research is a deterrent to the improvement of students' speaking and writing and that, in order to improve both of these, class time at all levels must be devoted to opportunities for meaningful listening, speaking, reading, and writing; and that NCTE urge the discontinuance of testing practices that encourage the teaching of grammar rather than English language arts instruction.

Getting Started Certification Visas Wages ... Grammar Guide
This syllabus was initially given to me by the Director of Astex Academy in Madrid and I do want credit to go where it deserves. It served as a foundation for understanding the differences between what we as Americans learned and what the British learned and now teach in Spain and throughout Europe. As you will soon discover, there are many differences between British and American English and although MOST of the grammar rules are the same, they do, oftentimes, go by different names. Not only that, but when you’re thrown into a private teaching position and expected to have your own plan, this is a definite help! Be sure though, to supplement your teaching with British English grammar books like Raymond Murphy’s “English Grammar in Use” published by Cambridge University Press
(well-known throughout Spain) which should further enhance your understanding of the below grammar points and score you brownie points with the Director for even mentioning that you know of the book. For the pros out there, this syllabus is more of an outline that can simplify the basics of what you already know.

At the beginning of the semester, prepare a list of common grammatical errors (e.g., parallel structure, misplaced modifiers) and randomly assign each error to a student. Alternatively, you can ask each student to choose a grammatical issue that is often a problem for him or her.
    Requirements for Students

What is grammar and how should

    by Jeanette Corbett
As so much has been written about grammar we could be forgiven if we admitted to confusion. Each person whether a learner or a teacher has an opinion. Likewise different styles of teaching equate to the varying opinions on how it should be taught, if indeed it should or can be taught. So two questions with very open answers, which I will attempt to reply to in this paper. Firstly, I will look at what grammar is considered to be from the learners perspective and that of the teacher, including my opinion. Then I will answer second question looking at how grammar is being taught today, focusing on it's usefulness for the learner and my experience. So then what is grammar ? When I asked a learner recently, the reply was a rule. He then went on to comment, it is so because it helps him construct a sentence, referring to his means to communicate (either spoken or written). Arguably the learner in general could just communicate using words but without a context or shared knowledge his words would fail to have meaning. Therefore grammar acts as his tool to create meaning. But grammar alone fails to create meaning, other elements are also necessary.

It is the most spoken language after Chinese (890 million) and English (320 million). It is thus worth noticing that speaking Spanish can open up a huge number of doors. It is a latin language which means that it has the same roots as Italian, Catalan, Rumanian, Occitan and French. Closest language is, by far, Portuguese. Catalan, French and Italian are of course close to Spanish. Note that Latin American Spanish has some tiny differences with standard Spanish (Castillan). In Spain, Spanish is the official language of the Kingdom; it coexists with other important languages: Catalan , Basque, Occitan and Galician. Note that the pronunciation table given below is not perfectly exact. It is worth listening to native speakers so as to improve one's pronunciation. When Spain's Spanish and Latin America's Spanish differ, I give below both pronunciation. A Eng b u t , Fr p a p a Note that vowels are pure. This means you have to pronounce them as a single sound, like in French, Italian or German. Not like English diphtongs.

    http://home.csumb.edu/v/varnijannea/world/Grammar/new_page_1.htm
Teaching Grammar as Reflection Marlene Asselin suggests that you can only begin to discuss grammar if you first define it. She suggests definitions of grammar. First, “ the unconscious knowledge of language that allows people to produce and comprehend language”. This is learned not through formal instruction, but through informal interactions and therefore applies to everyone. Secondly, “conscious knowledge of language structures including concepts (e.g., parts of speech, nominalization), terminology (e.g., verb, sentence) and analytical techniques (e.g., parsing) for talking about the language”. This is in reference to the Latin based systems from which English was created. And lastly grammar may be defined as “linguistic etiquette and consists of rules about correct and incorrect usage”. This is what we commonly refer to as “proper English” and comes from how well-educated people of London once spoke. This last definition limits students to one “correct” grammar however, and is not culture sensitive. So, now that we have defined grammar, how can we teach it? There are numerous ways and each advocate has their own suggestions. Asselin’s studies show that the most effective thing we, as teachers, can do is simply give the students the tools they need to produce and understand language relevant to them and also ensuring that students view these tools as valuable. The first thing we ought to do is look at ourselves. How do you view grammar? What is your attitude towards English? Do you enjoy learning grammar? When is grammar knowledge useful? Find your own

    http://home.csumb.edu/v/varnijannea/world/Grammar/new_page_7.htm
Grammar needs to be understood by everyone of every language. But, we also need to learn that each language has their own grammar. There is not single way of doing things. Everyone uses language as a communication tool and therefore needs to understand the grammar that goes along with it. Second language learners will learn more effectively if first they understand the grammar of that language. In fact, Zhongganggao states that understanding grammar gives second language learners a formula for success because they simply learn to equate the grammar of their primary language into the next. If they can translate it over, then they are successfully learning a second language. (Zhongganggao, 2001). Student-Centered Focus All students who enter the classroom will be learning grammar. When we are learning to write, read, and speak we are actively involved in learning grammar. However, teaching "traditional" grammar concepts at specific times may not be relevant to children's concerns at that time. Grammar instruction should be student-centered focused on their concerns and needs as they arise. has great resources for every grade level.
