The Writing Center at AASU GRAMMAR-MECHANICS SESSION #1:
THE PARTS OF SPEECH
This lesson covers the parts of speech. Knowing what they are and how they work provides an operating vocabulary for understanding how sentences are formed as well as how spelling, punctuation, and syntax contribute to the communication of meaning. This understanding is important because, in English, words sometimes can and do function as different parts of speech.
  • Definitions, Categories, and Examples
Nouns name a person, place, thing, or idea. Most nouns have different forms for singular and plural items. In the majority of cases, a noun assumes possessive form if followed by an apostrophe and an "s." Nouns function as subjects, objects, and complements.
Proper nouns name specific groups, people, places, things, events, or ideas. The first letter of a proper noun is always capitalized.
Ex: Native Americans, Mother Teresa, Copenhagen, Lexus, Super Bowl, New Criticism
Common nouns name general people, places, things, activities, or ideas.
Ex: guitarist, suburb, bicycle, soccer, cubism
