The Special Attribute CAT: General Outline of a Grammar
Each constituent of an FD is generally characterized by its ``category''. In FD terms, this means each constituent includes a feature of the form (CAT category-name) , where category-name is expected to be an atom. A grammar is expected to give directives for each possible category, for example NP, VP, or NOUN. The outline of a grammar must be: ((alt ( ((cat s) rest of grammar for category S ) ((cat np) rest of grammar for category NP other categories NOTE: The current version of the unifier makes the assumption that the grammar has such a form. The (CAT xxx) pairs must appear first. The function grammar-p checks that a grammar has the right form. The list of categories known by the grammar can be found by using the function list-cats . See appendix for a list of the non-standard features of this implementation. NOTE: The symbol identifying categories ( 'cat ) can be changed in the program. It is by default

grammar exercises general instructions. In the clause analysis exercisesyou will be presented with an example sentence (printed in red).

Grammar exercises: general instructions
In the clause analysis exercises you will be presented with an example sentence (printed in red). Beneath each word you will find a so-called checkbox , which you click to indicate that the word above it is selected. To the right of the example you will find a set of seven buttons representing the seven clause elements (labelled S, V, dO, iO, sP, oP and A). If the sentence consists of more than clause, you will also find a set of buttons representing the individual clauses. Your task is to click the appropriate checkboxes to indicate which words , in your opinion, make up a given clause element (in a given clause). In addition, you should click the appropriate button to indicate which clause element you are dealing with (and, if relevant, you should click the button which indicates which clause you are dealing with). Once you have done this, you click the button labelled "Submit answer" to have your solution evaluated. A response will be provided at the top (or the bottom, depending on version) of the page. In the example below, a user has identified the direct object. Click "Submit answer" to see the response:
