Table of Contents Introduction Part I. Dysfunctional Institutions so annoying: the news is authoritatively telling me that this organization has issued this report, but I'm looking at the Web site, and the Web site is nothing but empty slogans and menus of program areas, like it's a Reagan-era bureaucrat laughing at me over the phone. Now, I do understand part of what causes this: organizations that want the media to broadcast their press releases typically offer an exclusive to particular media outlets, promising to embargo the report until the privileged outlets have fully broken the story. That means that I can't get the report right away. Instead, I have to make a note, somehow recall a week later what the note was about, and swap the issue back into my head. This is nearly impossible in practice, such that it would take a major concerted effort to determine what proportion of new-reports-out-today

Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF)
Can participating in a single international science fair change your future? For 18-year-old Park Youngki, the answer is a resounding yes. He returned from Intel ISEF 2002 with a first place award from the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and a third place grand award in computer science. His project, Finding Solutions to the Problems Indicated in the Existing IDA Start Algorithm focused on locating a problem within the basic algorithm of artificial intelligence and then finding and proving a new algorithm that solved the existing 20-year problem.
Intel Korea offers valuable opportunities to participate in science fairs as part of the company's collaboration with South Korea's Information and Communications Center (ICC) under the auspices of the Ministry of Information and Communications (MOIC) Since 2000, the South Korean government has offered credits for ISEF participants so that they are exempt from entry examinations for the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).

Government Agencies have failed to protect the citizens of Toms River, New Jersey in the past and the question remains are we being protected today?
With the release of the final version of the Public Health Assessments on Reich Farm, Ciba Geigy, and Health Consultation on Water Quality, why aren't our questions being answered truthfully and with current information?

The release of the Final Version of the Public Health Assessment for Toms River, New Jersey, one has to wonder why the corporate polluters are being protected and who will protect the public. First, the public should understand that the State of New Jersey assumed all future responsibility for Reich Farm ( by agreement between the State of New Jersey and Union Carbide) for an amount somewhere between $30,000.00 to $60,000.00.
What are our government officials trying to hide
from the public?
We understand mistakes have been made by government officials in reference to the Superfund sites here in Toms River, New Jersey. For example, failure to monitor off site air quality during the incineration of chemicals on Reich Farm. There will be more information about this on a future web page. Also the failure to foresee the impact of dumping the contents of Ciba Geigy Landfill Cell 2 and Cell 3 waste water treatment sludge on top of Cell 1 and the potential impact on Cell 1 liner integrity. Another example is allowing heavy trucks to traverse a closed landfill.

38,000 drums of highly toxic waste was buried in Cell 1 on the Ciba Geigy Superfund Site and no government agency intends to clean this mess up.

Shaded areas are approximate locations of landfill cells on Ciba Site
Another issue not resolved, will the State of New Jersey respond to citizens' requests for a public hearing on the renewal of the Ciba Geigy Landfill permit? Where is the cancer cluster located
in Toms River, NJ?
This is one of the most often asked questions. The answer really is that all sections of Dover Township, Toms River, NJ. Years ago it was thought to be confined to limited areas, but time has shown that this is not the case. As reported on August cover page the cancer statistics showed 112 cases of children being diagnosed with cancer here in Toms River, NJ. At the last Citizens Action Committee on Childhood Cancer Cluster Meeting, the State of New Jersey revised that number to 111 childen being diagnosed with cancer. It was determined that one child had moved out of Toms River to another state, which meant the child could not be counted.

Government creates fake Web sites to teach a lesson to online investors
WASHINGTON (AP) McWhortle Enterprises Inc. seems like the perfect investment for the post-Sept. 11 world: a solid company, praised by analysts and customers, selling a handheld biohazard detector guaranteed to beep and flash in the presence of anthrax or other deadly germs. Only one problem: The company doesn't exist. McWhortle Enterprises is a government hoax cloaked in respectability and planted on the Internet, waiting to deliver a lesson about the risks of online investing to unsuspecting consumers. The Securities and Exchange Commission, the principal agency behind the fictitious company, was announcing Wednesday that it has seeded the Internet with a series of such Web sites laying in wait to say "gotcha" to naive investors, according to a source familiar with the project. The SEC would only say that it was holding a news conference to discuss "investor education initiatives."

Second faculty teach-in on the Sept. 11 events is a walk-in-and-discuss affair
By Adrial Lobelo '02 To help continue the dialogue on issues surrounding the catastrophic events of Sept. 11, Isaac Kramnick, Cornell vice provost for undergraduate education, organized the university's second teach-in, held Monday, Oct. 15. Tim Murray, left, professor of English and director of graduate studies in film and video, speaks with freshman Max Eisenburger at "The Media and the Crisis" table, during the faculty teach-in in Willard Straight Hall's Memorial Room, Oct. 15. Nicola Kountoupes/University Photography The teach-in was an all-day affair held in the Memorial Room of Willard Straight Hall, chosen by Kramnick as an appropriate place for students to informally discuss issues with faculty members knowledgeable on a variety of subjects. Throughout the day, participating faculty were stationed at tables dedicated to preassigned topics, including: International Economic Implications; Buildings, Urban Disasters and the Cultural Meaning of Architecture; Islamic History, Culture and Religion; America and the World; The Crisis and American Politics; The Media and the Crisis; and Terrorism and Security. Students coming into the room were free to visit tables featuring topics they wanted to discuss. Many of the discussions early in the day focused on the political implications of the conflict.

Students, faculty hold teach-in to try to understand roots of terrorism
By David Brand "I am a Muslim, I was born in America, I exist," said an emotional student, riveting a packed Call Alumni Auditorium in Kennedy Hall on Monday. "I do not know what this man [Osama bin Laden] speaks of when he speaks of Islam. He makes me want to cry when he does these things in the name of God. How can my God be different from his?" Senior Fariba Yassaee, 21, an economics major from Demarest, N.J., and the daughter of Iranian immigrants, was among the Islamic students and faculty who spoke with emotion at a "teach-in" to discuss last week's deadly terrorist attack on the United States. Faculty panelists at the teach-in Sept. 17 in Kennedy Hall include, from left: Shawkat Toorawa, assistant professor of Near Eastern studies; Muna Ndulo, professor of law and director of the Institute of African Development; and Henry Shue, professor of philosophy. Nicola Kountoupes/University Photography Organizer Isaac Kramnick, vice provost for undergraduate education and professor of American studies, recalled the teach-ins that Cornell helped to pioneer during the Vietnam war. "I thought I could bring this about again because there must be an intellectual assessment of the horrible event's causes and implications. We are trying to start a process," Kramnick said.

TALKBACK TO JESSE BERST Legislation is never the way to teach morality Doug Alder

Tuesday Oct 06, 1998 Occupation: INTERNET TECHNICAL SUPPORT Location: ROSSLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA Legislation is never the way to teach morality. Regardless of what actions the US Congress takes the internet will continue to evolve in its own , somewhat anarchic, way. Nor does the US have either the legal or moral right to try and impose its peculiar brand of morality on the rest of the world, not that lacking that right has ever stopped your country from trying in the past. Whatever happened to the concept of personal, and by extention, parental responsibility. It is the parents ,and only the parents, responsibility to ensure that what their children do while on the net falls within the realm of what is acceptable to those parents. The rush to have governments babysit the populace raises frightening prospects of right wing theocracies on the one hand and socialist dictatorships on the other. OTHER TALKBACKS: Government not the answer

What Does The Bible Teach About A Woman’s Role In The Church, Home and Government?
By Pastor David L. Brown, Ph.D.
© 1996 David L. Brown In 1963 Betty Freidan ‘s book, The Feminine Mystique , was published and it popped the lid off "Pandora’s Box" releasing the Woman’s Liberation Movement . American culture has not been the same since. Woman’s lib has touched every facet of American culture and now it is increasingly coming into the evangelical and fundamental church. This past year my aunt Mildred died. She was one of the almost 4,000 ordained and licensed women in the Assemblies of God. I was brought up in the United Methodist Church. I remember on more than one occasion having a woman preacher in the pulpit. In fact, there are 4,743 women "clergy" in the ranks of the United Methodists today. One of them pastors the Methodist church in this town. Our family briefly vacationed in Florida this past winter. We stayed with a retired Christian friend. I had been the assistant pastor of this woman’s husband back in the early 70’s. We attended church with her the Sunday we were there. It was a Southern Baptist Church. I was shocked when a woman got up and preached the sermon. Upon doing some research I find that there are about 1000 ordained Southern Baptist women clergy despite a 1984 Convention resolution stating that the Scripture "excludes women from pastoral leadership." In a September 1993 meeting of the SBC Executive Committee, a measure to expel congregations for ordaining women was rejected unanimously.

What is Political Science? Politics has been defined in terms of governance, power, and as the authoritative allocation of values, and, even who gets what, when, and how. But no simple definition can capture the broad range of subject matter that is included in political science. You can get some idea of the scope of the discipline from the four main subfields that make up the undergraduate curriculum: Political Theory, Comparative Government International Relations, and American Government. Political scientists study topics such as the exercise of power and influence; sources and resolution of conflicts; the relationship of politics to the economy, culture, and other aspects of society; the adoption and implementation of public policies; and the development of political systems. These topics are studied at all levels, from local communities to the global community. However politics is defined, it is clear that actions in the political arena have vital effects on our lives, liberties, and well-being. From this standpoint, political science deals with how we reach the collective decisions that shape our common fate.
