      Overview of the Curriculum
Bringing home a paycheck is the first step toward self-sufficiency. Other crucial steps to success include managing money, food, time and other resources efficiently, meeting children's needs, and being an effective problem solver. "When You Work" is a program that teaches low-income working families the skills needed to balance work and family needs. Portions of this curriculum have been used successfully in many Wisconsin counties. Evaluation from Fond du Lac County showed that participants improved their use of money management, food planning and shopping skills. Initial versions of this curriculum were developed by Barbara Roder and Nan Baumgartner, Family Living Agents in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin as "A Family Living Skills Training Program." The program was part of the S.O.A.R. Training in cooperation with the Department of Social Services' Work Not Welfare Pilot Program in Fond du Lac County. "When You Work" contains additional contributions by UW-Extension Specialists. Attempts have been made to make the information and examples applicable to audiences throughout the state. Additional activities from other county and state staff have been incorporated into "When You Work."

The SACS micro-workshops are brief, half hour sessions designed to help teachers continue to integrate SACS principles into their teaching practices. Ideally, these short workshops follow the Toward a Safe and Caring Secondary Curriculum-Approaches to Integration one day workshop and are facilitated by a staff member. Each micro-workshop examines a SACS concept or introduces an instructional strategy or learning activity that can be adapted for any classroom setting in any subject area. These micro-workshops are an effective way to extend the professional development experience after the staff has experienced the full day workshop. The micro-workshops can be scheduled as a portion of monthly staff meetings or undertaken as small-group, study sessions. University credit may be available for completion of this series.

Teaching Life Skills for Optimum Health Outcomes
by Lynne E. Whitt Visit the for more health-related content. Today’s children are required to negotiate a plethora of "risks" as they grow into adolescence: school violence, sky-rocketing STD rates, and epidemic abuse of illegal substances. The range of underlying factors that can increase the likelihood that children will engage in unhealthy behaviors include low self-esteem, insufficient decision-making skills, lack of interest in education, deficient information regarding health issues, and a perception of limited social, educational, and professional opportunities. Because the consequences of unhealthy behaviors are much greater today than in the past, health education must focus on more dynamic and interconnected approaches to teaching children how to grow into healthy and productive adults. Children need more than just "health facts" to prevent making unhealthy choices. They need to be taught the requisite abilities and positive behaviors that enable individuals to deal effectively with the challenges of everyday life and succeed in a complex world. These "life skills" (table 1) can help promote good, lifelong general health and educational competence. Research from the Carnegie Corporation, 1992, and the School Health Education Evaluation, 1984, indicates that children who have the ability to cope with stress, competition, anger, responsibility, negative peer pressure, and educational challenges are more likely to adhere to preventive health practices than those who have low confidence in themselves and in their ability to control their own destinies. The most effective health education programs utilize skills-building strategies to prevent abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, HIV/AIDS, violence, and other behaviors that compromise the health and the general educational well being of young people.
