Global Warming If some environmentalists are to be believed, we are on the verge of massive global climate change which will see a significant rise in sea levels, chaotic weather patterns, and catastrophic droughts all caused by small increase in global average temperature. This site provides links to resources skeptical of those sort of doomsday scenarios. The articles linked to here are written by a wide variety of people, from scientists to laypeople, and their inclusion here should not be read as an endorsement of their positions. Just as when dealing with things coming out of the environmentalist camp, you need to use your brain and decide for yourself to what extent global warming poses a threat to humanity. 44. NRDC - Global Warming
NRDC’s global warming site provides information on the causes and effectsof global climate change, and offers solutions to the problem.
http://www.nrdc.org/globalWarming/default.asp
From sweltering heat to rising sea levels, global warming's effects have already begun. But solutions are in sight. We know where most heat-trapping gases come from: power plants and vehicles. And we know how to limit their emissions: through advanced technologies and stronger laws. NRDC experts are fighting on many fronts to put these fixes in place. By shifting the perception of global warming from an abstract threat to a pressing reality, and helping citizens take action. By pressing business and industry to consume less energy and build more efficient products. And by working for laws that will speed these innovations. Together, these actions form a practical, economical approach to solving this urgent problem.

Introduction
Welcome to the U.N. conference on climate control and greenhouse gas emissions! As you well know, one of the most serious issues facing you today is the destruction of the Earth's environment. Imagine, in the brief period of time since the industrial revolution scientists have noted that humans have actually been able to effect the weather patterns, temperature, and atmosphere of the Earth. Negative effects on biological organisms will inevitably follow if we do not reverse the trends that we have started.
The 167 nations of the Earth have come together this week to agree upon a way to stop the process of global warming. You and your fellow U.N. specialty teams on climate control are here to decide on a piece of legislation that would decrease the emissions of greenhouse gases 20% by the year 2005. Should you and your committee support the agreement or not?
The Task This quest challenges you to take on the roles of individuals attending a U.N. conference on climate control. After investigating the issues and questions facing your committee. You will present your conclusions at the conference and decide if you will endorse a piece of legislation requiring emission of greenhouse gases to be cut to 20% of current emissions by the year 2005? It is for you to decide!
  • Select a group of four people for your committee.

51. Campaign ExxonMobil
Shareholder campaign to promote corporate responsibility on global warming, focusing on the world's largest oil company.
http://www.campaignexxonmobil.org/
Home Learn News Act ... Donate "The real critique of ExxonMobil right now is that neither the CEO, nor the board, nor management have a plan for appropriately managing the assets of the company given the challenge of climate change. "
Mark Bateman, Investor Responsibility Resource Center. Dear Concerned Shareholder:
Climate change poses real challenges to investors and companies alike. For the oil and gas industry, the stakes are probably the highest. BP and Royal Dutch Shell have created targets and timetables for reducing emissions, and have external auditors verifying their progress. Most of the oil majors have begun investing in low- and zero-carbon technologies so they have a diversity of energy products to meet future demand. Several oil companies discuss climate change in their 10-K filings. Shareholders in ExxonMobil may be left wondering: What are the company’s goals for reducing emissions? How will the company ensure that it will have relevant products in countries with aggressive emissions-reductions goals? How will ExxonMobil address the facets of climate change that will have direct and lasting impact on the bottom line?

Newfound L.A. Fault Threatens Major Quake

from: Robert Bast ... Sunday, April 06, 2003 Now the threat of "the big one" may be greater than previously feared. Researchers have identified a buried fault that may have caused at least four large-magnitude earthquakes in the past 11,000 years and is still active. Known as the Puente Hills Blind Thrust System, the fault is three to 17 kilometers (2 to 11 miles) deep and extends for almost 50 kilometers (31 miles) from northern Orange County, through Los Angeles, up to Beverly Hills. We feel it's important to speak out on the many issues directly effecting the health in this country compared to others around the world and beyond. Each and every month we will have different topic and conclusions from our expert panel that will hopefully help you or someone you know by arming them with powerful information they may someday need. Why is health care on the rise? Inflation? Hardly. Health Care on all fronts is up over 500% compared to 6 years ago. Hard working men and women can't afford this rise of epedemic proportions especially since the same health care in Canada is 70% less than in America. As a matter of fact, there are more MRI machines in the state of Wisconsin than in the entire country of Canada. A little strange isn't it. Prescription Drugs. Can we afford it?

Backgrounders, links and sources for journalists covering the environment April 7 Chemical Plant Security Scheduled for Markup Markup of the Bush administration's chemical plant security proposal is scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, before the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. According to a memo from Environmental Defense , the Bush plan will call for tighter security at chemical plants but may do very little to compel facilities to switch to safer chemicals and processes. Washington Post editorial, April 6: " Safeguarding Chemical Plants A report by federal auditors in March found substantial risk of attacks on chemical facilities that could lead to injury or death to tens of thousands of Americans in and near these plants. The report also noted that to date, the state of security at these facilities is unknown. Sen. Jon Corzine (D-N.J.) said the report confirmed his belief in the need for tough new regulations.
