© Pitt Rivers Museum Photograph taken by the pioneering Oxford anthropologist Beatrice Blackwood (Pitt Rivers Museum) of a woman on New Britain, Papua new Guinea, binding her baby's head. Skull deformation was practised in this area to make the child more attractive. Over the last 500 years, colonialism has influenced the lives of people throughout the world. An enormous amount of literature has been written on the subject, the vast bulk of which operates on a very broad scale. However, Dr Chris Gosden, a Curator at the Pitt Rivers Museum, and Ms Chantal Knowles, research assistant, are focusing on artefacts collected from one area: the island of New Britain, Papua New Guinea, between 1884 and 1914. CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS AS A FULL PAGE 4.1. BACKGROUND It is increasingly difficult for prehistorians working in the twenty-first century to conceptualise the problems experienced by their predecessors, and approaches to interpretation before the 1960s are consistently criticised. Culture history and diffusionism may - with hindsight - seem excessively preoccupied with classification and social evolution, and to have applied unsophisticated historical interpretations instead of asking fundamental questions about human behaviour.

TYPOLOGY AND CROSS-DATING Sequence dating and seriation
4.2. TYPOLOGY AND CROSS-DATING It must be made clear at the outset that typology is not, strictly speaking, a dating method, but a means of placing artefacts into some kind of order. Classification divides things up for the purposes of description, whereas typology seeks to identify and analyse changes that will allow artefacts to be placed into sequences. 4.2.1. Sequence dating and seriation

Ananova: Egypt receives stolen sarcophagus from Germany The lower half of an ancient gold coffin has been returned to the Egyptian museum in Cairo from Germany. The 3,300-year-old coffin has gone back after successful talks with the state of Bavaria. The golden coffin of Echnaton, King of the Pharaohs, has been on show at the Museum of Egyptian Art in Munich for more than 70 years. The treasure was discovered by archaeologists in 1907 in the Valley of the Kings but the bottom half went missing in 1931. A Munich Egyptologist discovered the antiquity was stolen and the Bavarian authorities approached Egypt. After years of negotiation, they offered to restore and return the sarcophagus. "It shows that when you have goodwill between two nations, and between scholars, any historic monument will come back," said the head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, Gaballah Ali Gaballah. He says the return sends a signal to all those who dare to steal from Egypt that Egypt never let's go. Story filed: 15:27 Sunday 27th January 2002 Related stories:
