Knowing how to care for and train your pet is essential for a happy relationship! Although we want people to think of their pets as part of their family and treat them as such, it's also important to understand that they aren't just "little people", but part of another species. Dogs, cats and other critters have their own physical and medical needs, in addition to behaviors and instincts.
To keep our pets healthy and happy, we must learn what their needs are and provide proper care for them. A good diet, regular veterinary visits, and opportunities for exercise and play are essential. But how do our pets become good companions and a joy to live with? That's up to us! Pet owners need to learn to effectively communicate with their pets and take the time to train them. A well-trained and socialized pet makes sharing your home a lot easier and a lot more fun.
Millions of pets are taken to shelters or abandoned every year, with undesirable behavior being one of the leading causes. However, this is not a "dog problem" or a "cat problem" but a "people problem." It's our responsibility to first understand what is normal behavior for our pets. Dogs and cats do what is natural to them. Dogs like to chew, cats like to use their claws. Our job is to learn to communicate with our pets and teach them acceptable and appropriate behavior. Chewing a toy is acceptable; chewing our shoes is not. Scratching a cat post is good; scratching the couch is not.

POCKET PET CARE How to Care for Gerbils What to Expect From Your Guinea Pig What to Expect From Your Rabbit How to Care for Rats and Mice ... Back HOW TO CARE FOR GERBILS Gerbils are naturally friendly and curious, but, like many other "pocket pets," they often end up at shelters because their caregivers are unable to provide them with adequate companionship and care. Gerbils can be happy and healthy almost anywhere, including during their temporary stay at your shelter, provided you follow these guidelines.
    Keep Old Friends Together:
Unlike hamsters, who are solitary creatures, gerbils are naturally social and friendly to humans-and to familiar gerbils. If they're housed together from a young age, they'll probably be happy as clams. So if you receive surrendered same-sex gerbils who have been living together, there's probably no need to separate them when they come into your shelter. But beware of introducing new gerbils to the cage! Gerbils are clannish, and if you try to place newcomers together, they may live up to the meaning of their Latin name: "little clawed warriors". Give Them Cool Digs: In the wild, gerbils inhabit cool, arid places; you should try to house them in similar conditions. A quiet, dimly lit space far away from noisy dog kennels is best. Use a cage with a solid floor-a converted aquarium tank works well. If you must use a wire cage, make sure that the bars are no more than a centimeter apart; gerbils may look plump, but they can squeeze through small spaces as if they were made of jello. They're also great jumpers, so make sure their temporary home has a secure top. Line the tank with unprinted newspaper, and add timothy hay or shredded paper for burrowing. Avoid cedar shavings, which can irritate gerbils' respiratory systems and livers. Finally, furnish a gerbil home with a water bottle, a nest box, exercise toys, chewing blocks, and lengths of paper-towel tubes for hiding. You'll have created the ultimate in creature comfort.

    http://www.snowflakepets.co.uk/html/gerbil.html
Gerbils are friendly and lively. They are easy to keep, and odour-free. Mongolian gerbils are more sociable than some other species and probably make the best pets. There is a wide variety of colours available, in self colours and patterned with white. Their front legs are much shorter than their back legs, so they can sit up and use their front paws like hands. The hind legs also enable them to jump great distances. They may bite if frightened. Size: 70-100g (2.5-3.5 oz) Males are generally heavier than females. Lifespan: 4-5 years Living Together: Gerbils enjoy company, and should be kept in small groups of the same sex if breeding is not required. Feeding: A gerbil seed mix will provide most of your pet's requirements, but fresh food such as dandelion leaves, carrots (cut into small chunks) and cabbage leaves should be provided regularly. Wash or peel these if necessary, and take away anything that hasn't been eaten at the end of the day. Food should be offered in earthenware bowls, as they have powerful teeth and will destroy some containers. Fresh water always available from a drinking bottle. Treats should be offered only occasionally. Dog biscuits can be given for gnawing, but these should be broken down into a size that gerbils can handle. Housing: Because they are sociable these little rodents should not be kept on their own. This means that a larger home is required. Because they like to dig they need a deep layer of wood shavings, so most wire cages are not suitable. A converted aquarium is an excellent choice, with a secure mesh lid to keep your pets safe. Extra care is needed if you have a cat. Gerbils are rodents, and should be provided with chewing blocks or other gnawing materials. Retreats should be included in the cage, such as half flower pots or cardboard tubes from kitchen towels.

    Jun 05 '00
I really felt compelled to write about our newest members of the family! Our new pet's names are Mozart and Einstein, both females and both gerbils.
I was not to keen on the idea of having rodents in my home. Two dogs I felt were plenty. With some persuasion my 14-year-old son convinced me into letting him have rodents as pets.
We started our adventure looking for the perfect pair; (gerbils need to live as pairs, preferably from the same litter and the same sex).
We went to Petsmart and found that the gerbils they had on display did not like being handled and were about full grown; (finding gerbils that are pretty young and have been handled are easy to work with and less likely to nibble at you).
I learned very quickly that gerbils are easy to care for and to manage. They are low maintenance animals.
Here are some of the basic needs of a gerbil:
A ten-gallon fish aquarium works very well for a gerbils home! (Just be sure to buy a fitted screen or plastic fitted lid.) Use Natural Pine Shavings for bedding (Cedar shavings causes respiratory problems).

    Shiloh - Pets
Introduction: Fourth graders read the book Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. As part of their reading curriculum, they participate in the following activities: Activity One: Pet Essay Poster
This activity is done prior to reading the book. Students think about their own pet. If they do not have a pet they think about one they would like. They write a three paragraph paper about their own pet. The final draft is glued on construction paper with a photo or drawing of the pet and displayed in the hall. Activity Two: Tri-Fold pet care learlets
While students are reading Shiloh , they will make one-page tri-fold pet care leaflets. They will then share these with each other. As they do these activities, they will consider:
*Do's and don't's of animal care
    *Habitat of animal in captivity
    *Correct diet to maintain health
Then, as they read the book, they will compare the dog's care and treatment with that of other types of pets they have researched.

Pet Gerbil Care Gerbils make good pets. They are more active than hamsters and have active periods during both day and night. They are friendlier and more docile than other members of the rodent family. Since gerbils are desert animals, they do not urinate or defecate very often. This is their way of conserving water in their natural (hot) habitat. Gerbils are relatively inexpensive to purchase and feed and require only minimal space and care. They also make good solitary pets. Gerbils enjoy interacting with humans, and the more a gerbil is handled, the tamer it becomes. Gerbils that are not accustomed to being handled may bite. A small aquarium with a screen top is an ideal gerbil home. Aquariums are easy to clean, minimize drafts, and prevent paper or wood shavings from being kicked onto the floor. Gerbils are curious animals and sit on their haunches to view their surroundings. Gerbils also like to burrow. Give them plenty of bedding so that they can burrow. Enrich their environment with toys and tunnels. Paper towel tubes work well, as they can crawl in and chew them up. Gerbil owners should feed their pet a commercial pellet feed made especially for gerbils. Fresh water from a hanging bottle should also be available at all times. Greens (lettuce) and seeds can be offered as occasional treats. Uneaten portions of greens should be removed before they rot.

"Gerbils make good pets," says Dr. Randall L. Peper, veterinarian at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine at Urbana. "They are more active than hamsters and have active periods during both day and night. They are friendlier and more docile than other rodents. And their cage stays cleaner because they are a desert animal that doesn't drink or urinate much."

Most gerbils live three to four years and have few health problems. Like other mammals, gerbils can develop cancers in their later years. Twenty to forty percent of gerbils have a genetic predisposition to epileptic seizures. The seizures are initiated by loud noises or stress and may first strike when the gerbil is about two months of age. There is no treatment, and the gerbils usually recover on their own. Since this runs in families, it is best not to breed your gerbil if it has seizures.
