Gerbils as the perfect pets
  • To have gerbils is to have a big aquarium where they live and enjoy life. In order to get your gerbils tame you need to handle them a little every day. They don't like to be picked up by the tail. But gerbils actually loved being petted , so don't forget to pet them even if only for a minute a day.
  • Gerbils are healthy animals and thrive in large aquaria with lots of hay, toilet rolls and bedding material . My gerbils usually have wooden houses too. They chew at their houses and hide their babies in them.
  • Gerbils can become extremely tame and are really perfect pets. Gerbils do not smell and are extremely inexpensive to keep and feed. My gerbils can sit on my shoulder and never jumps away. The younger gerbils have a tendency to be active all the time and they seem to be almost unable to sit still for long. But they do calm down with age, and an older gerbil may be very tame, coming up to you when you talk to it, loves to sit in your hand and be petted, and so on - it may even fall asleep in your hand! It is hard to imagine how tame gerbils can become if you have not experienced it yourself!
  • You only need two gerbils to fill a big aquarium, no more and no less. Gerbils are highly territorial, and need lots of space at the same time as they are very social animals, so pleace keep your gerbils in pairs.

Gerbils Gerbils (i.e. Mongolian gerbils) are small rodents, with long furry tails with a tuft of fur at the end. They are larger than mice, but smaller than typical hamsters (syrian hamsters, not dwarf hamsters). The wild type coloration is "agouti", where each hair is banded, usually gray next to the skin, then a yellowish color, then ticked with black, with off-white hair on the belly. However, through selective breeding, several lovely color variations are available. In their dry native habitats of Asia and Africa gerbils have few natural enemies and seem more curious than fearful of humans. The Mongolian gerbil, the most common species sold in stores, is a born burrower and will develop networks of tunnels with food storage, nesting, and sleeping sites. Gerbils are four to six inches long excluding the tail and have a lifespan of three to five years. The gerbil family is made up of roughly 100 species. These are 14 basic groups of gerbils. The species most commonly kept as pets is the Mongolian Gerbil, whose scientific name is Meriones unguiculatus.

http://www.animalhospitals-usa.com/small_pets/gerbil_care.html
Gerbil Care Gerbil fans say that gerbils make good pets due to their temperament, and ease of care. They tend to be easily tamed and are not as skittish as some other small rodents. They also aren't as inclined to bite unless threatened (as always there are exceptions). Coming from a dry natural habitat they are designed to conserve water, so produce scant urine and dry droppings, making it fairly easy to keep their cage fresh and clean. They go through several sleep/active cycles in the course of 24 hours, although they do tend to be more active at night. They are very curious and will explore anything, and can be quite entertaining. Gerbils are social animals, living in colonies in the wild, so do not do well as a solitary pet. Keeping a same sex pair (litter mates usually do well together) is much preferred. If you have a single older gerbil, it can be difficult to introduce a new one though as they are quite territorial. Housing: A pair of gerbils doesn't require a lot of space, a 15-20 gallon aquarium is sufficient. However, for such curious and active creatures a larger cage is nice and allows more creativity with furnishings and toys. If an aquarium is used, a lid is necessary because gerbils can jump very well. A wire cage with fairly narrow wire spacing will also work well. Plastic cages do not hold up very well to the gerbils' chewing habits. A wheel should be provided for exercise, a hamster wheel is fine but the wheel should be modified or wrapped (e.g. with duct tape) to provide a solid surface. The open rungs on the open slats of a typical hamster wheel can catch the gerbils tail and cause injury. Gerbils will also explore and enjoy a variety of toys, such as empty toilet paper rolls, small boxes, and nests. Keep in mind the gerbil will chew everything you put in its cage so make sure toys are non toxic and not harmful if accidentally ingested.

Care of Rodents Below is some basic care information for rodents. Please consult detailed care manuals for these animals or check with your veterinarian. Hamsters, gerbils, rats and mice are members of the rodent family. They have long upper and lower incisors (front teeth) that grow continuously. All rodents require material to gnaw, in order to keep their incisors sharp and worn to the proper length. Hay, cardboard tubes and wood (apple, pear, willow) are all suitable for your rodent to chew on. Generally, rodents are more active at night and can be quite noisy!
    Housing
A cage measuring 60 x 30 x 30 cm. is a minimum size for hamsters, gerbils and mice. Rats require larger habitats. Absorbent materials such as white wood shavings should be used to line the cage bottom. Gerbils and hamsters like to dig and burrow so adding a layer of peat moss allows them to exercise this behaviour. Clean the cage often at least once a week. Inside the cage, rodents should have a cardboard or wooden house, toys such as plastic tubes and small boxes, some shredded tissue for nest building and an exercise wheel for smaller rodents. Secure cages are a necessity as rodents, especially hamsters and rats, are real escape artists.

    Gerbils:
Gerbils show periods of activity throughout the day and night. Gerbils are very easy to keep clean and look after and a very friendly and full of curiosity. Gerbils hop on their hind legs and feed with their front limbs, much like squirrels. Gerbils will provide a continuous source of amusement and entertaiment. Gerbils like the company of their own kind and if same sex pairs are introduced to each other early enough, good friendships will be established. When older, Gerbils will invariably attack new acquaintances, so that later introductions have to be made with great care. Gerbils live up to three years.
    Housing and Bedding
A large glass aquarium makes an ideal home, far better than any bought metal cage. You will need to have a wire mesh cover for this. Large quantities of floor litter are essential. Use a mixture of straw, sand , sawdust and peatmoss to give a consistency thats good for burrowing. At one side of the habitat have the depth of this mixture to be about 7cms and the other side to be 20cms. Also have a cardboard tube as a tunnel for your pet. A gerbil will also make great use of a small tree branch for gnawing. Place the habitat in a draught free location not in the dark or direct sunlight. A temperature of 20-24 celsius is ideal. Always avoid excessive heat. Habitats only need cleaning once every 3 weeks but need to be washed out thoroughly and replace all the materials.
    Feeding
Gerbils in the wild are grain eaters. A diet thats a mixture of sunflower and canary seeds, grains of oats, barley and maize mixed with a pelleted feed is best for a gerbil. One tablespoon of food per day is enough for a gerbil. You may also give it small amounts of vegetables such as grass, cabbage, lettuce and carrots. Provide fresh water daily from an inverted bottle with metal canula.

The following are some basic care tips on these animals. Before you decide on a pet, do some more reading and research. Possibly talk to someone who has the type of pet you are considering. For further advice, or in the case of a suspected medical problem, consult a veterinarian.
Small Mammals - Gerbils, Hamsters, Mice, Rats, Degus
    Selecting
With their diverse and interesting personalities, small mammals easily capture your heart. And they fit into lifestyles where other pets would be unsuitable, such as in apartments and with novice pet owners or families that are away from home doing the day.
A wide variety of small mammals awaits you, so to pick the one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, you must learn about the needs and personalities of the different species. Do your homework before you get the pet by visiting your library or bookstore, calling a humane society or accessing one of the many computer bulletin boards [web site discussion groups] where pet owners exchange problems and experiences.
    Nutrition
Food and water need to be available at all times. Many of these small creatures like to hide their food, so make sure they do not run out. Laboratory pellets as the main food source, supplemented with a good quality grain mixture a couple of times of week is the best basic diet. You can also compliment the diet with small amounts of clean, organic dark greens and fresh fruits. Be sure to remove any uneaten fresh food withing 30 minutes as it will spoil. You should also offer fresh Timothy or Alfalfa DO NOT feed your small rodent: salt, sugar, chocolate, or foods with high fat content. Healthy treats may include: plain popcorn, low sugar cereals, or bird seed. Water bottles should be used instead of dishes as they stay cleaner longer. Be sure to clean the water bottle at least once a day, using a mild soap.

    Pet Gerbil Care

By Theresa A. Fuess, Ph.D., Information Specialist, University of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine
"Gerbils make good pets," says Dr. Randall L. Peper, veterinarian at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine at Urbana. "They are more active than hamsters and have active periods during both day and night. They are friendlier and more docile than other rodents. And their cage stays cleaner because they are a desert animal that doesn't drink or urinate."
Gerbils are relatively inexpensive to purchase and feed and require only minimal space and care. They also make good solitary pets. However, they enjoy interaction, and the more a gerbil is handled, the tamer it will be. Gerbils that are not accustomed to being handled may bite.
Most gerbils live three to four years and have few health problems. Like other mammals, gerbils can develop cancers in their later years. Twenty to forty percent of gerbils have a genetic predisposition to epileptic seizures. The seizures are initiated by loud noises or stress and may first strike when the gerbil is about two months of age. There is no treatment, and the gerbils usually recover on their own. Since this runs in families, it is best not to breed your gerbil if it has seizures.
A small aquarium with a screen top is an ideal gerbil home. Aquariums are easy to clean, minimize drafts, and prevent paper or wood shavings from being kicked onto the floor. Gerbils are very curious and sit on their haunches to view their surroundings. They also like to burrow. Give them plenty of bedding to pile up, both to burrow in and to climb on top of for the best possible view. Enrich their environment with toys and tunnels, even paper towel tubes they can crawl in and chew up.
