Sponsored by the Department of Geography and the Institute of Behavioral Research Renewed immigration to the United States is prompting a fundamental ethnic and racial restructuring of American society. Indeed, some observers claim that the U.S. will become a "minority majority" country in a few short decades a projection that stimulates much social and political anxiety. Traditional immigration gateways (e.g., California and New York especially their major cities, Los Angeles and New York) have struggled to respond to rapidly changing demographics. Immigration affects almost every aspect of society in these contexts; from housing and labor markets to cultural identities and inter-group conflicts. While research and policy communities have attempted to address the impact of renewed immigration on communities in gateway states, immigration increasingly impacts non-traditional destinations, as convincingly demonstrated by Census 2000. Small communities across the country are experiencing dramatic demographic changes, and the economic, political and social changes that follow. The pace of these changes challenges our conventional understanding about the causes and consequences of immigration. This miniconference seeks to bring together scholars from multiple disciplines interested in immigration and ethnicity in the United States. Our intent is to transcend some of the disciplinary boundaries in order to induce fresh thinking about immigration and ethnicity in the U.S. As a starting point for our discussions, we offer the following hypothesis: the nature of immigration and its impacts are conditioned in important ways by the geographic context(s) in which it occurs. We conceive of geographic context at multiple scales, ranging from the body (e.g., multi-ethnic individuals), to neighborhoods to cities to states and regions. As immigration increasingly characterizes non-traditional destinations, we need new ways of theorizing and studying the processes and their outcomes.

PhD, 1999, Geography University of Minnesota
MA, 1994, Geography, University of Minnesota
BA, 1991, Geography and International Studies Macalester College , St. Paul, MN Why Geography?
I went to college planning to study international relations, and although I did get a joint major with international studies, I graduated as an urban geographer focusing on North American cities. How did that happen? I took a class, in German, on "European Cities" and I realized that cities were what I really enjoy, experientially, and intellectually. Geography provided a vocabulary and a framework for understanding, for example, why some cities are dense and walkable, and others completely auto-oriented, or why elites in Europe mostly live close to downtown, while in North America upper income areas are more frequently in the suburbs. Furthermore, urban geography provides a means to confront and examine inequality and operations of power. Geography was also a way for me to make sense of my own background, and place identity, which was (and to some extent, remains) rooted in nine years (including most of high school) in Toronto, Canada. Research
My dissertation and subsequent work to date has focused on neighborhood activism, place identity, and local politics

American Cities THE CENTRAL CITY THE SUBURBS THE NEW URBANISM ASSESSING THE AMERICAN CITY We're coming, finally, to a sequence of four portraits of the world's humanized landscapes. That's what human geography is finally about. You could say that we're looking at pattern now, rather than process. Or you could say that we're looking at the visible consequences of all the activities we've been tracing. I want to begin with American cities, because they're the places we know best. What comes to mind with this topic? One thing is downtown, that cluster of skyscrapers that immigrants first saw from the decks of liners coming into New York's harbor. Now we mostly see downtown through a car or plane window, but it still grabs our attention. Around it, there is the huge penumbra of suburbia: freeways, arterial streets, curvilinear residential streets, commercial strips, a carpet of houses with backyard pools, and a scattering of bigger buildingsshopping centerss, college campuses, hospitals, stadiums, warehouses, and factories. Those are the tangibles. There's something else, too. Maybe it's excitement. Maybe it's fear. Maybe it's a sense of a world with nothing worth doing or seeing. Maybe it's some of each.

GA Georgia, founded in 1732, is one of the original 13 states. It was named in honor of England's King George II. Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi; the state's large size and thriving industries have given it one of its nicknames, the Empire State of the South During the Civil War, the fall of Atlanta was a crucial turning point in the defeat of the South. Today, Atlanta, which became Georgia's capital in 1868, is a thriving city with major national corporations, and it is considered the economic and cultural center of the Southeast. The natural beauty and famous seaside resorts of Georgia are a major attraction for tourists. Many beautiful monuments and parks, including reminders of important Civil War battles and heroes, dot the Georgia countryside.

Candidates who intend to run for the 12th District seat

By Bret Bell, Sylvia Cooper and Lee Shearer

Morris News Service Reporters from three Morris Communications newspapers - the Athens Banner-Herald, The Augusta Chronicle and the Savannah Morning News - worked together to sketch an outline of the sprawling 12th Congressional District, where a new representative for the region will be chosen Nov. 5. Candidate qualifying for the seat runs Wednesday through Friday.
Click on graphic for a larger image. STAFF Chuck Clinton stuck his head from the hold of his shrimping boat, Dragonard, and for the first time in a long time, thought about Athens. Mr. Clinton lives in Thunderbolt, a fishing hamlet just east of Savannah at the southernmost edge of the newly formed 12th Congressional District. If he threw a rock across the Intracoastal Waterway, where he ties up his boat, it would land in the 1st District, which spans the Georgia coast. That district would make sense for Thunderbolt, he said. Being lumped in with Augusta and Athens does not.
