The department of software was founded in 1971 (the head of the department, acad. I . Vekua and since 1978-prof. Hamlet Meladze). It is one of the largest subgroups of the department: there are 27 scientific workers on the faculty-6 professor, 11 assistant professors, 2 instructors, 20 post-graduates and competitors. At the faculty is created educational-scientific centre of mathematical modelling (head-ass. prof. N. Skhirtladze). The department is training students and post-graduates, basically in three specialities: applied mathematics, mathematical modelling, mathematical software of computers, systems and nets. About 40 main and special courses are read by the specialists. Two educational- scientific seminars work at the department: in applied mathematics and modelling, in system programming. Every year are conducted conferences of young scientists, students and post-graduates. Scientific works take actual part in organization and work of such meetings. Scientific-research themes of the faculty mean mathematical and program software of contemporary computer net. Basic results received by the scientific workers of the department are following:

Geography
"The gateway between Europe and Asia..." "A country situated at the heart of the oldest continents of earth..." "The crossroads of many important routes since centuries..." "A bridge between ages, nations and civilizations..." If you ever take a look at some of the related publications, you will see that almost every passage presenting Turkey begins with such phrases. This is natural, because Turkey is a unique country with a unique geographical location, linking East to West, and offering the present together with the past. Here, history and geography live side by side, harmoniously. The gifts of nature stand all over the country, carrying signs from the earliest ages of humanity. Although it is impossible to separate one from the other, an introduction to the country's physical characteristics will help you understand its history and its treasures much better. Between these land borders of Turkey, there rest the seas which surround it on three sides. The Black Sea to the north, the Mediterranean to the south, and the Aegean Sea to the west, fill in the remaining parts of the frame with their lengthy beautiful coastlines.

INTRODUCTION
In December 1991, the Soviet Union was dissolved. In its place emerged 12 independent countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
GEOGRAPHY
Russia is the largest country that emerged from the former U.S.S.R. It stretches from the Baltic Sea, across the northern Eurasian landmass, to the Bering Strait where the Russian island lies only three (3) miles from an island that is part of Alaska. Russia and the other republics of the former Soviet Union are going through profound political and economic changes. At present, the tourism industry, like other industries that were strictly regulated in the former USSR, is undergoing a transformation that can be confusing to customers as well as to the industry itself. Throughout the entire former Soviet region, major structures of civil authority and service organizations are either being replaced by new bodies or are withering away without replacement.
VISAS
A U.S. citizen must have a valid U.S. passport and a visa to travel to any country of the former USSR. At present, only Russia and Ukraine are issuing visas. At the time of publication, the other countries of the former USSR had either not established embassies in the United States or, in the case of Armenia and Belarus, had opened embassies but were not yet issuing visas. To travel to a country of the former USSR that is not yet issuing visas, a Russian visa is still required, and it is valid for all such countries. At present, travel

Georgia
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Georgia was absorbed into the Russian Empire in the 19th century. Independent for three years (1918-1921) following the Russian revolution, it was forcibly incorporated into the USSR until the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. Russian troops remain garrisoned at four military bases and as peacekeepers in the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The country continues to move toward a market economy and greater integration with Western institutions. CHAPTER 2 ECONOMIC TRENDS AND OUTLOOK 2.1. MAJOR TRENDS AND OUTLOOK Under the old Soviet central planning system, Armenia had developed a highly sophisticated industrial sector, supplying to the USSR and foreign markets machine building equipment, defense electronics and optics, textiles, and other manufactured goods in exchange for raw materials and energy resources. Armenia today remains a large food importer. Its mineral deposits - copper, coal, molybdenum, and gold - appear so far to be relatively small. The economic decline, which started with the 1988 earthquake and the disintegration of the USSR, was particularly severe in 1991-94 due to the ongoing conflict over the Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan and Turkey shut down pipeline and railroad traffic to Armenia for its support of the Karabakh Armenians. Georgia provides Armenia with its only means to receive deliveries of natural gas. Most industrial enterprises remain either shut down or operating at drastically reduced levels. At the same time, the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh has forced the government to militarize a number of its operating machinery manufacturers, thus putting additional non-productive burden on the weak economy. With IMF help, the Armenian economy stabilized in 1993-1995. Inflation was brought under control and negative growth bottomed out. Long term resolution of the country's economic problems will depend on solving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, reestablishing normal relations with the neighboring countries of Turkey and Azerbaijan, and lifting the embargoes. A settlement would give full play to the country's existing industrial and agricultural potential, and highly educated and skilled human resources, while establishing Armenia’s normal trade and supply links.
