We offer three type of housing assistance. In addition to housing assistance we also offer several resident services. A brief outline of each program is offered below. For more detailed information, surf to one of the more detailed pages.
    Public Housing Program
Our Public Housing Program provides housing to families with income below 80% of the local area median income. We have 642 apartments in our Public Housing Program consisting of efficiencies, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom, 3 bedroom, 4 bedroom, and even 5 bedroom units. Most of our residents are responsible for paying their own utilities at the apartment. The rent that a family pays is based on their monthly income. Currently the rent is 30% of the families adjusted monthly income. Most of our Public Housing apartments are located in Americus, Georgia. But we also have several units located in Andersonville, Leslie, and Plains, Georgia
    Section 8 Program
We also operate a section 8 voucher program. The section 8 program consists of 554 vouchers. An applicant on our waiting list would receive a Housing Choice voucher when their name reaches the top of our waiting list. When the families receives this voucher they then look for housing from local landlords. They may choose to lease the current apartment that they are living in or they may look for a new apartment. After the family locates the apartment or house that they would like to rent, the Housing Authority inspects the unit to make sure it meets HUDs requirements. The family then enters into a lease agreement with the landlord. The Housing Authority and the landlord enter into a Housing Assistance Contract. The family then pays rent based on 30% of their adjusted monthly income and the Housing Authority pays the landlord the balance.

The University Channel (channel 15 on Charter)
    University Cablevision Description:
University Cablevision is provided as a non-profit service on the University of Georgia campus only and is paid by user fees budgeted through the University and its units not by charging members of the general public. As such University Cablevision does not have subscribers and is not available to the general public in the Athens-Clarke County community or beyond. It is the intent of the University to maintain the service as a non-profit service available on the university campus only, but the university recognizes that if its cable service is modified to become available to subscribers of the general public in Athens-Clarke County, the cable service could be subject to the franchising authority of Athens-Clarke County.
University Cablevision is overseen by the University Cable Policy Board and is operated by the Telecommunications Division of the Office of the CIO in conjunction with the Office of Instructional Support and Development (OISD) under the Vice President for Instruction. University Cablevision provides cable TV services to classrooms, offices, student housing, hotel rooms and other viewing locations on the University of Georgia campus. Funding for programming, maintenance and repair, overhead, replacement equipment and selected staff is derived from user fees charged university units and allocated to appropriate budgets within CIO and OISD. Additional support is derived from various university sources and funding initiatives.

Visitable housing allows access for friends, family
By Nicole Bondi iCan News Service, staff writer July 21, 2000 ATLANTA, Ga. In September, Tonja Cash moved to a home that’s accessible to a person with a disability even though she doesn’t have a disability. But Cash said she’s taken advantage of the accessibility many times. "Whenever I have to move things that are on wheels, it’s very nice to have the ramp. A lot of my neighbors use the ramp for the same reason," said Cash, who has also been able to invite over a friend who uses a wheelchair. "It’s turned out to be a great thing." When the Spirit of ADA Torch Relay passed through Atlanta today, it made a stop in Summerhill, a neighborhood of visitable homes. Atlanta has more than 500 such homes, which require a ramp or no-step entryway, doorways at least 32 inches wide and a first-floor bathroom. It was the first city to pass an ordinance requiring any house that receives some kind of government perk – such as funding or tax waivers – include these features. The ordinance was passed in 1992. Most of those houses are not owned by people with disabilities.
