Subject: geomorphology as a field of study
I have a question for everyone. What do you say to the geologists who claim that there is no longer a need for the study of geomorphology, that it is nothing more than physical geology? Our school is in the process of a semester conversion, and the geomorphology course was a casulty of the process. Geology dropped it, but I was successful in adding it to the geography curriculum. There seems to be no small degree of antipathy toward the subject among the geologists here on campus. So, I wondered how others have handled the question. Thanks, Paul R. Larson Paul R. These notes have an intrinsic worth not unrelated to the effort it has taken you to access them. They have been provided to help the student review the material and organize your thoughts. They are intended to be correct, but are not the Final Word of the Geologic Gods. Errors reported to the author will be appreciated; blind quotation used in lieu of thought will be treated less kindly. Geology is a visual science and, as such, is much documented by pictures and graphics. These lecture notes are LARGE, ranging from 300K to close to 4M in size. Using a 56K modem it will take as little as 1 minutes or as much as 15 minutes to download a single file. Consumption of caffeinated beverages during this time is not recommended. This symbol indicates a condensed version, several slides to a page, suitable for note taking. Some will wish to save paper; some will wish to see the details; your choice doesn't affect download time.

The ESU Geology Museum has recently been renamed the Johnston Geology Museum in honor of Dr. Paul Johnston for his 38 years of dedication to the Earth Sciences Department and the University as a whole. He was responsible for starting the museum and has been director, curator, collector and jack-of-all-trades for the museum since its inception. The image above shows Paul doing what he did best teach. He did not limit this combination of teaching and field trips to university classes. Paul led trips for such diverse groups as the ESU geology club, the Boy Scouts, Elderhostel, the Kansas Academy of Sciences, and the Kansas Earth Science Teachers Association. The museum is an enduring legacy of his dedication and will continue to help teach everyone who visits it long after his retirement. Bedford Institute of Oceanography
The Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Canada's largest centre for ocean research, is located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Opened on October 25th, 1962, it has grown to rank among the most respected research institutions in the world. Over 300 scientists, engineers, and hydrographers in many specialized fields study the ocean off Canada's east coast. BIO scientific teams investigate the physical and chemical properties of the ocean, the life within it, and the geology of the sea-floor, as well as the interactions between the atmosphere, the oceans and the continents. Many of the Institute's projects are interdisciplinary, bringing together physical, chemical, biological, and geological oceanographers. A number of projects are also international, involving scientists from other oceanographic institutes around the world. Primarily operated by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), BIO also houses researchers from Departments of Natural Resources and Environment.
