You are the person to visit this page since October 6, 1997. This inventory was prepared by Mark Jensen in February 1997. The Geology Index is a series of 3" x 5" cards that hold entries indexing books and papers on geology topics. The date of its preparation was unrecorded, but the works indexed were published between ca. 1890 and ca. 1937, with the bulk of them published in the 1920s and 1930s. The first card in box 3 gives "Directions to Using Index." Cards in boxes 1 and 2 are numbered; these numbers are used as cross-referencing tools in boxes 3-6. Cards in box 1 list title and publication information for individual textbooks and monographs; United States Geological Service bulletins, circulars, professional papers; and other documents. Cards in box 2 list authors and the titles of their papers or books. Cards in boxes 3-5 list topics that are cross-referenced to individual authors and books in boxes 1 and 2. Box 6 holds cards that index stratigraphy topics and are also cross-referenced. Size: 1 lin. ft.

Geology is... Geology is the science that deals with the earth. Geology considers the rocks of which the earth is composed, and changes that have occurred, and are occurring to the earth. Therefore, geology helps us to know and understand the planet on which we live. Geologists are scientists who are interested in the history of the earth, its many layers of rocks, its minerals, and the ancient animals and plants that lived on the earth. Geologists use techniques such as observation, collecting, analysis and mapping. They study and describe many details of the earth: Ohio's Counties

A Geologist's Lifetime Field List
Introduction
The following is a list of essential or desirable locations for geologists or travelers to visit. It contains many of the interesting geological wonders of the world, with links for most of them. Other interesting natural phenomena are also presented. Much of this website is basically a modified and extended version of a list from an outstanding article written by Lisa A. Rossbacher (President, Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia) in the April, 1990 issue of Geotimes . The credit for any redeeming value in this document goes to her. Additional thanks go to the University of Cincinnati Geology Department for permanently archiving my webpages, and to those people who have sent in the suggestions which have been added to this page. A guest registry application has now been included ( below ) which allows anyone to enter additional suggestions to the geologist's list which are viewable by everyone. Some great additions have been posted here! Thanks!

Parkinson Laboratory Contact Info General Info Student Info Course Info ... ORGANIC GEOCHEMISTRY Welcome... T his page is a starting point to access information about all aspects of the Department of Geology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale: our faculty, students, research activities, graduate and undergraduate programs, degree requirements, and application procedures. There are links to specific courses such as our popular summer course in field geology taught annually in Montana and Wyoming, and to pages dedicated to the geology and seismicity of the southern Illinois region. A lthough many people think of geology as simply the study of rocks, the scope of the discipline is in fact much broader. In addition to its role as the science dedicated to investigation of the chemical, physical, and evolutionary nature and history of the earth, geology is integral to the resolution of such regional and global problems as environmental pollution, climate change, flood and earthquake hazards, adequate reserves of non-renewable energy sources, groundwater resources and their protection, and the discovery and exploitation of industrially critical ore deposits. T he report of the external reviewers prepared for our most recent departmental evaluation characterized us as "a very good to excellent mid-sized geology department". We offer degrees at the baccalaureate (B.A. and B.S.), master's (M.S.), and doctoral (Ph.D.) levels. The wide-ranging backgrounds of the faculty; a flexible, modern curriculum; individual attention to students; state-of-the-art research facilities; a dual emphasis on theory and practice; and our location close to a variety of geologic settings combine to make SIUC's geology program intellectually challenging and exciting, yet pragmatic. Our graduates currently hold professional positions in a broad range of industries, national and state agencies, and academic institutions.

Yellowstone Volcano Observatory T o strengthen the long-term monitoring of volcanic and earthquake unrest in the Yellowstone National Park region, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Yellowstone National Park, and University of Utah have entered into an agreement to establish the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO). The new partnership provides for iimproved collaborative study and monitoring of active geologic processes and hazards of the Yellowstone volcanic field and its caldera, site of the largest and most diverse collection of natural thermal features in the world and the first National Park.
“T he new observatory will improve our efforts to monitor Yellowstone's extraordinarily large and long-lived volcanic system," said Dr. Robert L. Christiansen of the USGS, Scientist-in-Charge of the new observatory. Dr. Christiansen was the Scientist-in-Charge of the Mount St. Helens monitoring effort when that volcano erupted in 1980. "This agreement is a natural evolution of our collective work over the years to track and study Yellowstone's unrest. There is no increased threat of eruptive activity at Yellowstone to cause concern at this time. We hope to use YVO to share even more of what we are learning with the public, park visitors, and nearby residents, and to be in a better position to provide warning of any future hazardous activity."
Y VO operations will be based from existing facilities at the University of Utah, Yellowstone National Park, and the USGS. The new observatory is modeled after the other USGS volcano observatories in Alaska, California, the Pacific Northwest, and Hawai`i. The observatories employ a variety of ground-based instruments and satellite data to monitor active and restless volcanoes and conduct a variety of studies to understand their eruptive and seismic histories and potential hazards. Together, the five observatories monitor 43 of the 70 or so potentially hazardous volcanoes of the United States. The five observatories are operated under the auspices of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Volcano Hazards Program.
