The SDSU Geography Department offers undergraduate, Masters and PhD programs with concentration in both human and physical geography. The department will also start offering in the near future a new MS/BS program in Geographic Information Science. The department has 17 full time faculty with a diverse range of research interests, including physical, cultural, urban and economic geography, environmental, natural resource and land use analysis, remote sensing, GIS, and spatial techniques. We have an active and collegial group of faculty and students, housed in a first-rate office setting that contains state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. We are also fortunate to live in one of the most attractive and vibrant cities in the country. San Diego boasts a beautiful physical environment and offers its residents a wide variety of cultural and physical activities (and a terrific climate).

Climate and geomorphic physical processes (e.g., weathering, erosion, diastrophism) help us to understand landforms large and small. Knowledge of these processes becomes a tool we can use to understand physical landscapes wherever we go.
Ayers Rock, or Uluru, Australia - In the "red heart" of Australia, Ayers Rock (sandstone known as arkose) is one of many inselbergs, or isolated mountains, that characterize the landscape because they are comparatively resistant to differential erosion , how different rocks erode away at different rates.
Near Lebanon, Pennsylvania - In Pennsylvania, a diabase outcrop called Dinosaur Rock is a world away from Australia, but the same physical processes are at work in both areas. Diabase is hard, erosion-resistant igneous rack. Dinosaur Rock's relief derives from the same process as Ayers Rock: differential erosion.
Physiographic Provinces of the Contiguous United States - The boundaries of the physiographic provinces or land form regions, of the 48 contiguous states are shown on this map without names. How many provinces can you name? What you get out of a map depends on the knowledge you bring to the map.

    Departmental Projects
Faculty in the Department of Geography are at the forefront of the discipline's future with projects that literally encompass the whole Earth. By dissolving the boundary between social and physical science we are exploring the human dimensions of global change. Our goal is to better understand the Earth's land surface and the way humans interact with it. Below are the general subjects in which the department's projects can be categorized. Since, in reality, these projects span multiple categories, it is not unusual to see the same project listed in more than one of these categories.
    Human Geography
Human Geography studies the co-evolution of structure and place with dynamic human processes such as changing socio-economic, land use, urban, and regional patterns, conflict and co-operation, diffusion of ideas or infectious diseases, and sustainable use of common-pool resources.

    Physical Geography
Physical Geography seeks to understand the spatial relations between the Earth's physical and biological systems, including climate, earth surface processes, and plants and animals. Human beings as agents of change in Earth systems is an increasingly important concern of Physical Geography.

    Human Environment Interaction
Human environment interactions studies the relationships between people and the biophysical settings in which they live and obtain their livelihoods. These studies include both the effects of humans on the environment and the effects of the environment on human activities.

    Using the National Geography Standards
Many educators have questions about how to implement the standards in their curriculum. You'll find a few suggestions and examples here. Using the National Geography Standards by Fred Willman You are a teacher who has heard about the new national geography standards and you want to incorporate them into your teaching. Each year one of your objectives is to teach students the following: Students will learn the names and locations of the states of the U.S.A. Does this objective fit into the national standards somewhere? If so, how many standards does it involve? You have decided that you want to somehow incorporate all eighteen geography standards into your study of the United States. To do so, what else will you need to study? As you read each of the standards below, a sample objective is written for each one to help you understand the focus and scope of geography.
    The National Geography Standards
There are 18 standards or goals which are grouped into six categories called "The six essential elements of geography." These six elements and the standards included under each of them are as follows:

    CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Geography serves as an excellent undergraduate major. City, county, and state governments are hiring geographers in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), urban planning, and environmental studies because of their broad training. The national mapping division of the United States Geological Survey traditionally needs geographers in map making and its related job openings such as photo-interpretation, satellite image analysis, and land use and land cover mapping. In addition, the analytical skills gained through a geography major provide a strong foundation for graduate study in law, urban planning and architecture. Geographers with advanced degrees are also in demand in colleges and universities around the world. Students should enhance their major with a strong array of courses in the international arena, statistics, physical sciences, computer science, and basic business principles.
