Homework Help Forum Homework Help Experts Breeding New Organisms Leo Galleguillos March 23rd, 1999, 6:46 p.m. ET The breeding of the appaloosa is a great example of selective breeding . Selective breeding, by definition, is the process in which individual organisms with desired characteristics are chosen to form a new generation. Now only has selective breeding created some of the favorite horses, but has also created the good-looking dogs and cats. The breeding of the appaloosa is also a great example of hybridization . Hybridization, by definition, is the breeding of organisms with different characteristics. After selective breeding or hybridization is complete, most scientists conduct inbreeding . Inbreeding, by definition, is the continued breeding of closely related individuals. For example, inbreeding could be conducted on two good-looking poodles to produce more good-looking poodles. Unfortunately, inbreeding comes with a big set of problems:

Okay, fair warning: the main thing to remember when you look at any Internet site, but particularly ones dealing with "issues," is that the information you read is going to be slanted, biased, whatever term you want to use. You probably won't be getting a complete picture of the subject, so read carefully and do a bit of thinking before you run with the information. Homework Help Forum Homework Help Experts Cloning by Mistie Reef February 17, 2002, 3:51 p.m. ET What if humans could fly? What if we could live for 300 years? Or what if we could breath underwater? What if there were several other people identical or just like you? Sounds like outrageous possibilities, right? Well maybe not for long. Scientist have successfully cloned mice, a monkey, a bull, and sheep. What's next humans? In the next few paragraphs I'm going to talk about and educate you about cloning, it's probably not what you thought it was. The consequences outweigh the profits to cloning. Animal cloning yields high failure rates, therefore human attempts would end in miscarriages and deformed babies. And many critics say that it's wrong to produce a person that is not genetically unique. But the people who agree with cloning argue that it would be alright because the "twin" would grow up in a different time period than his or her genetic twin. But patient groups and the biotech industry oppose the ban on human cloning because it would outlaw " therapeutic cloning" in which scientists make embryonic clones to get stem cells for potential disease treatments. The biotech industry say that cloning should be banned for reproductive cloning but allowed for therapeutic reasons.
