Tim Stowell
, State Coordinator History of Monroe County The Creek Indians had been living on the land that now comprises Monroe County, Georgia, from long before the colonial expansion in 1540 until 1821 and the Treaty of Indian Springs. On January 8, 1821, the Treaty of Indian Springs was signed by the head chiefs, including General McIntosh, of the Creek Nation, ceding the land between the Ocmulgee and the Flint Rivers to the U.S. Government. Five counties were created from the ceded lands, Dooly, Fayette, Henry, Houston, and Monroe. The original Monroe County included all of what would become Pike County and Upson County and parts of Bibb, Butts, and Spalding Counties. Monroe County was named for James Monroe, author of the Monroe Doctrine and fifth president of the United States. The county seat of Monroe County is Forsyth. Other communities in this county are: Bolingbroke, Culloden, Dames Ferry, High Falls, Indian Springs, and Smarr. (The below link to HISTORY/MAPS/PLACES is provided to give a more

Bible Transcriptions
My mother received two old Bibles, the oldest dating to 1792, from relatives in Tennessee who were storing them in an attic. When I began using my mother's research, I realized that these old Bibles hadn't been available to other people for many years, if ever. One Bible record has been published in a regional genealogical quarterly. Bibles have been invaluable to me in my research. Not only do Bibles provide detailed birth, marriage, and death dates, but they often are a window into a family's life. One of my husband's ancestors had 15 children, only two daughters of whom lived long enough to marry and have children. Reading the same name over and over in naming new baby boys was a reminder of how fragile life can be, as was seeing three or four family members die within days of each other. Please contact me if you are descended from any of the West, Kirkland and allied families and have a Bible record that you would like to share on the Internet. You'll receive full credit as the source and many people's everlasting graditude. My firm policy is to omit dates later than 1900 in Bible records to protect families' privacy.

Murray County, Georgia
In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Georgia Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Georgia, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web pages.
Our names are Tim Seawolf-Self and Barbara Ann Peck . We're responsible for Murray County. If you would like to contribute your information to this page, please let us know. Georgia State Coordinator: Tim Stowell
