Contact Your Member of Congress ACG Institute Set to Award Over $469,000 to 17 Researchers The ACG Research Committee met during this year’s "Back To Basics, IV" course in January in order to review and evaluate various grant proposals and recommend funding. The College and the ACG Institute have worked together over many years to enable young and aspiring physicians to further the development of their careers in gastroenterology as well as the future of the field in general with their new findings. This funding is essential in advancing gastroenterology in the world of medicine. The Committee took on the task of reviewing over 70 protocols submitted for the ACG’s Clinical Research Awards and was able to make favorable recommendations for funding on 17 Clinical Investigator proposals as well as two Junior Faculty Development Awards for a total grant commitment of $469,437. As noted above, this year’s grant review also involved funding for the Junior Faculty Development Award. Since its inception in 1994, the ACG Institute has granted over $4 million in order to promote research directly related to the needs of our members and to clinical gastrointestinal practice. This award supports a junior faculty member or mid-career clinical investigator of outstanding ability and potential and assists in the progression of an independent, productive research career in gastroenterology or hepatology. As they did last year, the Committee recommended two proposals to the Board of Trustees for funding at a level of $50,000 for two years.

What Is Colorectal Cancer?
Colorectal cancer describes cancers of both the colon and the rectum, both of which are part of the large intestine. While colorectal cancer is now the second leading cause of death from cancer in the United States, there is good reason for hope. Colorectal cancer deaths are decreasing each year. Much of this progress is due to screening tests that are recommended for both men and women, as well as improved treatments. Before colorectal cancer develops, visible changes often occur in the lining of the colon or rectum. One kind of change is a growth of polyps, which can be removed before becoming an adenocarcinoma a cancer of the cells that line the inside of the colon and recturm. More than 95 percent of colorectal cancers are adenocarcinomas. According to the American Cancer Society, about 94,700 new cases of colon cancer and 34,700 new cases of rectal cancer will occur in the United States this year. Colon cancer will result in about 47,900 deaths and rectal cancer for about 8,700 deaths.

Liver Cancer What is Liver Cancer?

Liver cancer is a malignant tumor in the liver, the largest organ inside the body. It is sometimes called "hepatic cancer." ("Hepato" refers to the liver. A "hepatologist" is a physician who specializes in diseases of the liver.) Cancer may originate in the liver (primary liver cancer) or can spread to the liver from another part of the body (secondary cancer). Cancer that begins in the liver may spread (metastasize) to the bones, lungs or other parts of the body. Hepatocellular carcinoma (also called "hepatoma") is the most common type of liver cancer, accounting for nearly 85% of primary liver cancers in adults. Hepatocellular carcinoma is a tumor that arises from a malignant change in one or just a few of the most abundant cells in the liver, the hepatocytes. Other rarer forms of liver cancer are: cholangiocarcinoma (originating in the liver's bile ducts), angiosarcoma (originating in the blood vessels of the liver), and hepatoblastoma (typically affecting young children). Although hepatocellular carcinoma is among the most common cancers in parts of Asia and Africa, it is less common in the United States and Europe. Approximately 15,300 new cases of this liver cancer are detected annually in the U.S. Unfortunately, nearly 13,800 people die of the disease each year, making liver cancer one of the less treatable forms of cancer. Like all cancers, early diagnosis offers the best chance for effective treatment.
