Gabon - Culture Overview
Gabon is a country of dense tropical forests astride the equator. Its original inhabitants were pygmies and other forest peoples but many other African groups subsequently settled there. Contact with European navies and traders has also shaped Gabonese culture. The capital, Libreville, was established as a base for freed slaves just before the colonization of the entire territory by the French. Though Gabon is now independent, its people value their ties with France more than many other former colonies. However, French influence over education, religion, and finance is much more pronounced in the coastal cities that have benefited from Gabon's oil boom than in the interior villages where half of the people live.
French is the country's official language, but the Gabonese speak about 40 native dialectsall of which fall within the Bantu language category. The largest ethnic group is the Fang who reside principally in the north. Other areas are home to the Myene-Mpongwe, Bateke, Babamba, Bakota, Okande, Bandzabi, and Pygmy peoples. Some 65% of the people are Roman Catholic. Protestants and animists make up the remainder except for a very small percentage of Islamists, whose influence is bolstered because a long-time president of the country is Muslim.

Gabon Time and Date Gabon Culture Back to Top A great deal of the cultural life of Gabon continues to be derived from or influenced by France. Gabon's contemporary writers express themselves almost exclusively in French. At the same time, there has been continued interest in the precolonial history and traditions of Gabon's peoples. Examples are the research on the Fang epic (mvet) and the art of the Mpongwe, Fang, and Kota. In 1983 the International Centre for Bantu Civilizations (Centre International des Civilisations Bantu; CICIBA) was created, with its headquarters at Libreville. Gabon has newspapers in French, national and provincial radio stations broadcasting in French and local languages, and television broadcasting from Libreville that can be received as far away as Lambaréné. French publications circulate extensively, and television programs are relayed from France.

Gabon Gabon is not high on the list of most travellers itinerary because visas come tied in a mile of red tape and day-to-day expenses, especially in Libreville, are prohibitive. But if you can overcome these drawbacks Gabon is worth a visit for its spectral contrasts. Its vast sprawl of virgin rainforests and teeming wildlife is The Ghost Who Walks territory, while its major cities are a sophisticated bustle of glitz, lights and casinos. Gabon offers a little of everything to just about everyone. The combination of Texan-tea money and French influence has unfortunately all but destroyed traditional Gabonese culture, but it's still worth passing through if you're taking the western coastal route north or south. Despite its wealth, Gabon's roads are not in the best of conditions and once you get off the main roads and railways, getting around is a hard slog. Full country name: Gabonese Republic

On paper, somewhere between 65% and 75% of the population are true to the one holy apostolic church, but traditional religions and animism remain strong influences. Consequently Catholicism in Gabon is more a matter of regional sensibilities than papal bull. About 1% of the population are Muslim, an extraordinary low number for an African country Although French is the official lingua franca, over half the population also speak the African language of Fang. You will also hear Bapunu spoken in the south, and Bandgabi in the east and south, around Franceville. Gabon is particularly noted for its woodcarvings and masks. The former gave visiting missionaries palpitations when they first set eyes on them, and the exquisite but sensual forms of the statues, with their emphasis on the fleshy tones of the human body, does suggest an earthiness at odds with Protestant and Catholic chastity. It's little wonder that they were banned as pagan idols by these buttoned-down proselytisers. Fang masks, like other African masks, have enormous significance in rituals designed to keep in touch with the world of the dead. Traditionally every aspect of the mask, from the selection of the wood to its creation, was overseen by a priest. These rituals were of prime importance. At completion, the mask developed enormous occult powers and was a concrete expression of the abstract world of the spirits. Sloppy attention to ritual details could spell death and disaster. Today these masks are valued for their artistic merit - both Picasso and Matisse were influenced by Fang masks - although the whiff of occult powers still hangs around them. The Gabonese art of mask making has been lost and the only place you can see them today is in the museum.

A s part of my decade living on Africa's West Coast, our family spent a memorable year in the Republic of Gabon, which hugs the Atlantic, straddles the equator and is roughly the size of France. Being health fanatics and outdoor types, my mother Suzanne, brother Jean Pierre and I thrived in the hot, humid climate - and in 12 months, managed to visit much of the countryside. This gave us an intimate connection with the Gabonaise culture and was valuable in my future career in tourism. We enjoyed a laid back, tropical lifestyle; food was delicious and varied, the shops and stalls were full of interesting items and tempting snacks. What's more, to our delight, the traditional West African culture had in no way disappeared with the oil boom." Thanks to mineral wealth and a relatively low population growth, Gabon is better off financially than most of Africa. This fact is reflected in their care and attention to basic ecological concerns. For example, the vast coastal wetlands and marshes, are still largely intact. This is something with which ATA members will heartily agree, the Association being a strong advocate of ecotourism. Gabon, which hosted the Africa Travel Association (ATA) International Congress in 1980, is easily accessible from the USA and Canada.
