Begun in what is now western Pennsylvania with a battle involving a young Virginia officer named George Washington, this conflict waxed and waned in an arch running from that western wilderness, through the Great Lakes, over to Lakes George and Champlain, and as far north as the River and Gulf of St. Lawrence. When the fighting was finished and the Treaty of Paris signed, France had lost all her possessions in North America and Britain was mistress of the entire region extending from the entire Atlantic coast to the Mississippi River.

General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm-Gozon was appointed supreme command of the French forces in America, arriving in Canada in May. Shortly after he arrived, war was declared between Great Britain and France. Montcalm's first order of business in the America was to try to establish control of the Great Lakes. The French had strong forts at the eastern end of Lake Ontario, Fort Frontenac, and at the western end, Fort Niagara. The British, however, had built a series of forts on the portage from Albany, up the Mohawk River, at the portage of Fort Stanwix, across Lake Oneida, and down the Oswego River to its mouth on Lake Ontario. In the latter location they built a fort on either side of the river, Fort Ontario on the east and Fort Oswego on the west. It was this fort that was the aim of Montcalm's plans in the late spring of 1756.

The Journal of Johann Michael Lindenmuth, 1737-1812
Transcribed and translated by Brigitte Burkett. Johann Michael Lindenmuth (1737-1812) has left us one of the better day-to-day journals of the French & Indian War as well as a brief journal of his service in the Revolutionary War. Lindenmuth enlisted in 1756, barely 19, for three years to fight "die Indianer und Franzoßen". By the time he was discharged in December 1759, he had fought through a multitude of the battles, skirmishes, and ambushes in western Pennsylvania. The Revolutionary War portion of his journal begins in 1778 and continues through to the end of hostilities. This section of the journal is less detailed than that covering the French & Indian war, but gives an overview of his service as a Lieutenant Colonel of the Berks County Militia.

The American Indian in the Great War:
Real and Imagined By Diane Camurat Master's Thesis submitted in 1993 to the Institut Charles V of the University of Paris VII
Preface Meanwhile, I looked for information on the participation of American Indians in World War I but found little. Books dealing with the general history of Native Americans either failed to speak about the subject or dismissed it quickly with a participation figure which varied from one text to the next. The first concrete elements I found seemed only indirectly related to what I was looking for: emblems. The insignia of the Second Division of the American Expeditionary Forces was a Plains Indian head. ) Section One of the American Ambulance Field Service also used a similar motif, as well as the Lafayette Escadrille. Stars and Stripes , the official review of the American Expeditionary Forces, of the "typical" image of Native American soldiers as brave yet primitive warriors. Posters In the Spotlight: The Eve Of The Revolution, A Chronicle Of The Breach With England In his book, The Eve of the Revolution, A Chronicle of the Breach with England Carl Becker endeavors to convey to the reader, not a record of what men did, but a sense of how they thought and felt about what they did. This narrative explains the feelings and state of mind of the people and classes involved in the events leading up to the American Revolution. This book published in 1918 was volume 11 of The Chronicles of America Series. Period of Great Discontent From 1660-1756, there was a growing political friction between England and her American Colonies, which soon would have led to American demands for independence, even if the events, which took place after 1756 and actually participated the Revolution, had not occurred. This friction came in many forms and combined they led to the tensions of the revolution. The period from 1670 - 1700 was a period of great discontent and rebellion in the colonies. England and Her Colonies The war between England and France, though at an end on the continent of America, was still continued among the West India islands, France in this case also being the loser. Martinique, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent's,every island, in fact, which France possessed among the Caribbees, passed into the hands of the English. Besides which, being at the same time at war with Spain, England took possession of Havana, the key to the whole trade of the Gulf of Mexico.
