Back to F150 Homepage Welcome to French F150, the second semester course of the first-year elementary French language and culture sequence at Indiana University. This syllabus presents the goals of F150, explains the department's expectations of students, and describes the criteria for the evaluation of student performance. Please read the following pages carefully and print them out as a reference. They contain essential information that will be important to you throughout the semester. In addition all students of F150 are responsible for all information on the course website and are expected to comply with related policies. Should you have any questions regarding this syllabus, please ask your instructor. Goals : French F150 is a continued introduction to the French language and the Francophone cultures of the world. It is designed to help students improve their communication skills in French and emphasizes all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. By the end of the semester, students should be able to interact successfully in French, understand the main ideas of what they hear, see, and read in French, and express themselves clearly in written French. In addition to linguistic skills, students will also gain a deeper understanding of diverse aspects of French-speaking cultures. The course textbook is specifically designed to help students achieve these goals.

Guide Picks - Top French Grammar Books There are hundreds, maybe thousands of French grammar books available, each claiming to be the "best," the "most concise," the "most complete," etc. Obviously they can't all be the best, and in fact one of them must, by definition, be the worst. How do you know which is which? Well, that's where I come in - I have more than a dozen French grammar books, many of which I use regularly, and others which I might as well throw away. Here are my favorite grammar books: the ones that I use every day as well as those I've grown beyond, but keep because they once helped me so much. (The parentheses indicate the working language(s) of each book.) Le Bon Usage
Originally published in 1936, this is the bible of French grammar - the most thorough French grammar book that exists. It has been republished more than a dozen times and is a must for fluent speakers. This is the book that native speakers refer to when they want to understand or explain some aspect of French grammar. (French)

Composition Back to Last Page Full Glossary Related Terms Aesthetics
Definition: This is the arrangement of things like lines, colors and form. When folks look at paintings they have been known to say things like, "My, the composition is very strong", which basically means, "That looks really good." Sometimes, even if we really, really hate the subject portrayed in a work of art, we can't help but like it because of strong composition. Art is funny that way. Pronunciation: kom·po·zi·shun • (noun)

Target Population and Aims:
This Module is a continuation of either, the LL 102 Intermediate French module, or the LL115 learning French 3 module. It will be offered to students who already have a good knowledge of French (ie, 5/6 years of French, rusty A level French or equivalent). Its main aim is the acquisition of an advanced level of French in the four skills (ie listening, reading, speaking and writing). Emphasis will therefore be put on accuracy in both spoken and written expression, with intensive practice of the language encouraged outside seminars by the use of self-study materials (tapes, wider reading materials, etc). The Module will use materials touching on various aspects of French life and institutions which will help students to understand contemporary French society. A regular review of French current affairs will help students keep up to date with the country. Seminars will be in French. The input will be through presentations by the lecturer as well as through the study and discussion of printed and recorded material from French press articles, literary extracts and interviews with French people on current topics. Students will be required to read at least one contemporary novel or play selected from the list below or recommended by the lecturer.
