Results of the 2001 provincial election are now in. The change in government means lots of new people in the legislature. This means there will be a need to educate them about the importance of forestry to the province of British Columbia. Here are some ways you can help.
The Association of BC Professional Foresters encourages members to discuss the profession of forestry along with other forestry issues with their elected provincial MLAs. It is important to find out where your representatives stand on issues and to inform and educate them on the importance of the forestry profession in BC.
There are a number of ways you can get involved in bringing forestry and the forestry profession to the forefront with your local MLA. This issue should be important to you, please make it important to your elected representative as well.
Keep in mind that while talking to your representative or communicating with the media you are doing so as a professional forester and NOT on behalf of the association.

Paper to the Government Panel on Sustainable Development
Forestry
Prepared by Friends of the Earth, August 1995
Introduction - the context

Sustainable forest use requires a global and cross-sectoral perspective. UK forests and woodlands cover some 2.4 million hectares (global forest cover is approximately five billion hectares) and only 13 per cent of UK demand for wood products is produced domestically. Planners of sustainable forest use must consider the full life cycle of wood. This cycle has hitherto principally been approached from a production perspective when it is clear that forestry must be set within the context of the global sustainable consumption of wood products. In this regard, the UK is one of world's largest per capita consumers. Friends of the Earth's own research has recently concluded that current levels of wood consumption in the developed world are far from sustainable. Thus an analysis of sustainable forestry should consider the UK's impact - as a consumer - on the forests of, for example, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Brazil and Indonesia.
The sustainable use of forests also involves a careful balance between potentially 'competing' cross-sectoral interests (economic, social, environmental, cultural) which can be reconciled within multi-purpose forests. For example, the forests of Forstamt Erlangen in Germany have been established in respect of their multi-purpose functions; for water economy (21%), for climate (64%), for the protection of roads (2%), for soil conservation (2%), for recreation (63%), for landscape and biotopes (21%) and for timber production (21%).

PRESS RELEASES CURRENT ARCHIVE GOVERNMENT ROLE VITAL FOR DEVELOPMENT OF FORESTRY SECTOR 12th October 2001 Government will continue to play a more vital role in enabling the joint efforts of the resource owners, the investors and the technical experts to fully develop the forestry industry, says Minister for Fisheries and Forests, Solomoni Naivalu. In his address to Parliament on Wednesday ( October 10), the Minister said that government has therefore set up the Fiji Hardwood Corporation to facilitate the commercial harvesting of the mahogany plantations. He added that through his new ministry, the Ministry of Public Enterprises and the Bose Levu Vakaturaga, he will work hand in hand in facilitating the processing of the forest resources, in order to achieve maximum benefits derived from sale of value-added products. Mr Naivalu said that Government's efforts will be guided principally by the following policies: That we will ensure that the landowners and the industry stakeholders, are fully consulted in all the stages in development of this industry. That we will ensure the direct participation of the landowners in the forest-based industries, so that they may derive equitable financial benefits.

PRESS RELEASES CURRENT ARCHIVE STRATEGIC PARTNERS IN FISHERIES AND FORESTRY ESSENTIAL December 18th, 2001 Resource owners in Fiji must be directly involved in the processing of their natural resources if they are to fully realise the worth of their ownership said the Permanent Secretary for Forestry and Fisheries, Mr Vuetasau Buatoka. However, this he said must be pursued together by Government, resource owners and investors. Mr Buatoka was speaking at the "Enhancing Strategic Partnerships in Government" workshop in Nadi yesterday. The workshop is chaired by the Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase with Cabinet, MPs and representatives of statutory bodies and private entities in attendance. Forestry and fishing, Mr Buatoka stressed are enormous economic banks, however, it has not been profiting to their optimum levels because of ownership related dispute that disrupt processing or scare away potential investors. He said this can be avoided if owners are involved beyond the extraction stage since they now realise that the optimum returns from the utilisation of their resources lie in the processing stage. For instance Buatoka explained that 104 logging licences are operational this year. Of this only four are Fijian contractors who are solely engaged in logging and not processing, imports or exporting.

U.S. Forest Service Uses Decision Support System for Ecological Assessments
ArcView GIS and Knowledge-Based Technology
The EMDS System
The EMDS Version 2.0 is an application for knowledge-based decision support of environmental assessments. This system provides interested users with a complete framework for developing their own knowledge bases and integrating them into GIS. The various components of the system include ArcView GIS, NetWeaver, and the assessment system that consists of the Analysis and Data Acquisition Manager (DAM) subsystems.
Plans for the Future
The EMDS development team is very excited about this system and is already making plans for future versions of the system. According to Dr. Keith M. Reynolds, team leader on the EMDS project, "EMDS Version 2.0 is a significant step forward in ecological assessment in that it integrates a powerful, intuitive, knowledge-based system into the GIS environment."
