    Washburn County - Forestry
    Information
FORESTRY The Washburn County Forest is a "working" forest. The forest is managed jointly between the County Forest and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Management is based on an allowable cut of 2000 acres of management per year. Annually, the County Forest conducts this management in aspen, pine, northern hardwood, and red oak. Management is done by a combination of selective thinnings and clearcuts. Washburn County manages by a principal called ecosystem management. This means that the forest is not managed exclusively for trees and fiber production. All management activities are incorporated with management for wildlife, water resources, endangered species, and recreation. The Washburn County Forestry Committee offers approximately 45 timber sales per year in three separate bid openings conducted in March, July, and November. Sales are sold through a sealed bid process. Gross timber sale revenues range from $800,000 to $1,000,000 per year. Ten percent of this revenue is paid directly to local Townships as a payment in lieu of taxes. The remaining monies are returned to the County's general fund, a portion of which funds the operating budget of the Forestry Department. Timber sale revenues also support the recreation program on the County Forest. Washburn County is one of the most diverse County Forests in the State. We have a multitude of forest types ranging from cedar swamps, to northern hardwood forests, to jack pine. We also offer a wide variety of forest products through our management program. This forestry work supports many loggers in the community and also helps support timber industries both local and statewide. Loggers interested in purchasing Washburn County timber sales should contact the Forestry Department.

The federal government owns over 217 million acres of trees. This is a significant portion of the 747 million total acres of forest land existing in the United States. The numbers show that 37% of all forests are owned by tax-paying American citizens. The exciting thing is, most Americans can drive less than an hour and visit a state or federal forest or park, quite often for free. GOVERNMENT OF CANADA RENEWS FIRST NATION FORESTRY PROGRAM OTTAWA (ONTARIO), April 2, 2002 - The Government of Canada will continue supporting innovative forestry initiatives in First Nations communities. Robert D. Nault, Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), and Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), today announced that the First Nation Forestry Program (FNFP) will be renewed until March31,2003. The Government of Canada will contribute $4.5 million to support the FNFP over the next year — with INAC providing $2.75 million and NRCan $1.75 million — and will investigate longer-term partnership funding opportunities in order to continue the program. First Nations and the forest industry are other major funding partners. "The FNFP has played a major role in creating economic development opportunities and encouraging First Nations to participate in the forest sector," said Minister Nault. "By working in partnership with the corporate sector, First Nations are able to improve the quality of life in their communities and benefit from sustainable resource development." "During the past six years, the FNFP has assisted more than 350 communities and 4,700 First Nations workers, on and off reserve, gain valuable experience in forestry management," said Minister Dhaliwal. "Through this renewed program, First Nations and the Government of Canada can continue to make a real difference in the lives of Aboriginal people in Canada — improving quality of life through sustainable resource development, environmental preservation and economic growth."

GOVERNMENT OF CANADA SUPPORTS MOOSE CREE FIRST NATION FORESTRY VENTURE MOOSE FACTORY, ONTARIO (January 17, 2003) - The Honourable Robert D. Nault, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND), along with Moose Cree Chief Norm Hardisty, today jointly announced a funding commitment of $650,800 in support of an economic development venture in sustainable forestry at Moose Cree First Nation. DIAND’s support for this project involves the Moose Cree First Nation pursuing a sustainable forestry licence as part of the Northern Boreal initiative, which was established by the Ministry of Natural Resources. The First Nation is exploring the feasibility of developing forestry operations in the proposed Moose Cree Management Unit, an area of 1.1 million hectares located north of the 50th parallel, south of Moose Factory and north of Cochrane, Ontario. This land has an estimated annual harvest allocation of 204,800 cubic metres of softwood, and is considered to be an ample supply for a viable forestry operation. Moose Cree First Nation has been arranging the details of this venture since 1996 with a partnership group that includes the provincially sponsored Ontario Living Legacy Trust, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, and Tembec Industries Inc. The First Nation is represented through its corporate entity, the Moose Band Development Corporation. So far, the partnership group has worked towards a Forest Resource Inventory and a land use plan. DIAND’s funding is being used to support the continued development of a resource inventory, land use planning, and project management activities.
