Help and Hope for Those With
Food Allergies
A speaker once said that we can live a few weeks without food, a few days without water, a few minutes without air, but only a few seconds without hope. Hope is indeed essential to life, to living rather than just surviving or existing. Some people with food allergies discover what they are allergic to, avoid those foods, and by practicing avoidance faithfully, enjoy stable health for the rest of their lives. Some avoid their problem foods for a time, and then their allergies improve to the point that they can eat freely again. Yet others develop allergies to more and more foods as time goes on regardless of how faithful they are about their diets. I was once involved in a discussion on how to prevent the development of new food allergies. One person said that using a rotation diet and not eating any one food too often was the way to keep from developing more allergies. Another said that rotation diets could lead to eating single foods in large quantities, and that eating too much of any food could cause one to become allergic to it. Finally someone asked, "So what will prevent the development of more food allergies?" The answer given was, "Death!" This does indeed seem to be the situation for some people - a situation without hope. The purpose of this website is to give you hope. Just as a rainbow comes after the rain, so too can you enjoy good health again. By treating the underlying root causes of your food allergies, you may become healthier than you have ever been before. It might not be a quick process, and most of the time you will eat differently from those around you (at least at first), but you can again be healthy enough to enjoy your activities, friends, and family. You can truly live again rather than just survive.

by Melissa F. Thompson ImmuneSupport.com Do you suffer from migraine headaches, confusion, hay fever, airborne allergies, insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome or sinusitis? All of these problems are common with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). But, did you know that each of these symptoms could be caused or made worse by food allergies or sensitivities? Many people have food sensitivities or food allergies, and CFS patients often have food reactions as part of the symptoms of the disease. Classic food allergies are rare, but food sensitivities are very common. Similar to the malfunction of the immune system in CFS, food sensitivities are also caused by an over-production of cytokines. Cytokines help to kill foreign invaders, such as viruses. However, cytokines can also be produced when reactive foods are mistaken by the immune system for foreign invaders, resulting in severe fatigue. Food reactions can cause many symptoms that are similar to those experienced by people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.(1) These symptoms include joint pain, chronic pain, cognitive disorders, digestive disorders, acne, depression and anxiety. To determine whether these symptoms are a part of a larger disease, like CFS, or due to reactive foods, a medical blood test or an elimination diet can be performed. There are many physicians that specialize in food allergies and sensitivities, and they feel that doing a combination of both most often provides the most accurate test results.

Children with food allergies and Milk allergies My daughter has no food allergies. No one in our family has ever had this problem, so I protein in to your family's diet while preparing wonderful, tasty recipes.
http://members.aol.com/katherinez/kath2.htm
I have two sons who are both allergic to milk. My daughter has no food allergies. No one in our family has ever had this problem, so I have had to gain all of my knowledge through experience. I hope that in writing this, I can help other parents who are having similar problems with their children. My older son's first year was a difficult and often unhappy time. From the moment he came home he cried night and day, and was initially diagnosed with colic. He spit up often, and began to scare us with brief bouts of what appeared to be choking. At one month, he stopped breathing in my mother's arms. By the time I picked him up and stimulated him, he recovered his breath. Following an immediate visit to our pediatrician, our son was admitted to a children's hospital. After several tests, he was diagnosed with Gastroesophageal Reflux and we were able to return home the next day. It was assumed that reflux was the cause of his previous discomfort, and he was prescribed medication to alleviate the pain. After seven months of switching reflux medications and dosages, the pain from our son's reflux was eased. However, the diarrhea and discomfort continued. The specialist strongly encouraged a switch from nursing to the use of Pregestimil, a "non-dairy, non-egg, non-soy, hypoallergenic predigested (and very expensive) formula." We reluctantly agreed, and soon found our son's pain to be significantly eased.

Boys with severe food allergies are saved by squirrel diet
Scripps Howard News Service SUNBRIGHT, Tenn. - A year ago Christopher and Nathaniel Thorne were so protein starved their hair was falling out. Today the brothers, ages 41/2 and 2, look and act healthy. Color has returned to their cheeks, and their hair has grown back thick and shiny, just like that of their parents, Joshua and Sharon Thorne.
Christopher and Nathaniel still suffer from food allergies, but no longer are their protein sources limited to shrimp and squirrel.
"People in the community ask me every day how we're doing on squirrels," Joshua said. "I tell them there's a few left in the freezer, and the boys are getting along fine."
A year ago an allergy skin test revealed that Christopher and Nathaniel could tolerate shrimp - as long as it wasn't breaded - and squirrels, which were abundant in the mountains surrounding the Thornes' Morgan County home.
"We were relieved to know they could eat squirrels, but we couldn't come up with a way to supply it," Joshua said.

Fish (and other seafoods) 2. Milk (dairy products) Answer Once a food allergy is diagnosed, the only proven treatment is avoidance of that food. Make a habit of checking food labels to identify hidden food allergens, taking time to read food labels while shopping. Since your child is allergic to milk, all sources of milk such as butter, cream, cheese, buttermilk, ice-cream, chocolate and yoghurt should be avoided. Watch out for words on labels like milk solids, whey, skim milk powder/solids and milk sugar. Kosher foods (foods under the supervision of the Jewish Beth Din) displaying the word "Parev" are free of milk and are therefore safe to eat. Those displaying the word "Milchik" do contain milk and should therefore be avoided. If milk and dairy products are restricted from the diet, it is important to substitute with foods that are rich in calcium (soya milk, rice milk, tofu and dark green leafy vegetables), vitamin D (fortified margarines) and vitamin B2 (organ meats, other lean meats, eggs and green leafy vegetables). If this is not possible, supplementation may be necessary.

YOUR PET'S ITCHY SKIN
Itchy skin in the small animal is often more than just a minor annoyance. Red, oozing bald patches, rashes, and large expanses of hair loss are unfortunate markers of very real discomfort for which a cause should be sought and specifically dealt with. The food allergy is one of the itchiest conditions known to cat and dog. Animals eat a variety of processed food proteins, fillers, and colorings which are further processed inside their bodies. Proteins may be combined or changed into substances recognized by the immune system as foreign invaders to be attacked. The resulting inflammation may target the GI tract or other organ systems but, in dogs and cats, it is the skin that most often suffers from this immunologic activity. Many people erroneously assume itching due to food allergy requires a recent diet change of some sort. In fact, the opposite is true.

Feeding and Nutrition #18 - Food Allergies - Reprinted with permission from Ralston Purina Canada
When a dog or a cat has digestive upsets or other negative reactions to a particular diet, food allergies are sometimes thought to be the cause. The truth is food allergies in pets are rare. The vast majority of allergies in pets are due to flee bites or contact with something in the environment. Before making any judgement about food allergies, it is important to understand what a food allergy is and is not. What is A Food Allergy?
Sometimes a food allergy is confused with food tolerance, which results from the inability of the pet to digest a particular food (such as lactose intolerance). A food allergy is an abnormal immune response to an individual food or additive. Signs of a food allergy include itching and other skin problems or possibly gastronomical disturbances such as diarrhea. Food allergies can occur at any age. They develop over time with repeated exposure to the same foods. Food intolerance can occur the first time a food is fed.

AND RELIEVE STRESS ON THE IMMUNE SYSTEM by Elmer M. Cranton, M.D
This diet is used in two ways: 1) To make a diagnosis of unsuspected food allergies. By adhering strictly to this diet for at least 10 days, as a test, you can observe whether symptoms improve. Foods can then be added back one at a time to further confirm a diagnosis of food allergy (this process can be repeated if in doubt). 2) To relieve stress on the immune system for up to 3 months, allowing time to recover tolerance to previously reactive foods. Offending foods may once again be tolerated in moderation. The diet is followed in this way during a three month anti-yeast program. Yeast in the body greatly increase the incidence of food allergy and chemical sensitivity. Once yeast have been eliminated, allergic foods are often much better tolerated. This food program has been called the “Cave Man Diet” or the “Rare Food Diet.” It's a diet that avoids foods you commonly eat more than once or twice a week. It thus eliminates many foods common to modern civilization and more closely resembles the diet of a stone-age, hunter-gatherer “cave man.”
