htmlAdWH('7005340', '120', '30'); htmlAdWH('7002028', '234', '60'); Main Create Edit Help I am searching for relatives of my father Edwin S Mack Jr.
After searching for him since I was about 17, I finally found my oldest half brother, Edwin S Mack III, in the fall of 2000. However, missing still are cousins and other half siblings, as well as Jonathan Adair Mack who has had no contact with his family for over 20 years.
There are many things we have been TOLD about Edwin that are not verifiable... a lot of what my mother was told conflicts with what he told his second wife and her children. However, here are the things that I have heard with the stories as resolved as possible.
Edwin was born in either Florida or NY in January 1910 or 1911. On his official papers from things such as drivers license, pilot license, military papers, and social security, both places and dates are listed. Edwin III says that he was told our father was born in NY, so that is the most likely truth.
He was the grandson of German (Jewish) immigrants, although he claimed they changed their names in Austria and imigrated from there. Edwin had not heard the Austrian connection, and since his mother

Zolfo Springs, Florida
By Spessard Stone
Zolfo came into existence in 1886 when the Florida Southern Railroad opened a depot. A postoffice was established on May 26, 1886. On September 13, 1909 the name was changed to Zolfo Springs. The name was derived from the sulphur springs, which formerly flowed into a swimming pool, which for many years was a community recreation site. In 2000, Zolfo Springs has 1,300 citizens, but no springs.
Two early articles follow:
Zolfo Of 1889
The following article was edited by Spessard Stone from The Florida Times-Union of September 20, 1889:
Zolfo, Fla., September 19-

Farmers are preparing to plant vegetables extensively for shipping. They have had very wet weather for some time, but it is now drying off a little.
Phosphate Mining
The DeSoto Phosphate Mining company has extensive works just across Peace river. There are two large buildings, with fine machinery for drying and storing the phosphate. The company has a small steamer for towing its barges between the phosphate beds and the works. The hull is now built for a much larger and more powerful one, and the engine and machinery are daily expected. The company had a fine flowing artesian well on its grounds. Orange Growing Orange growing is the principal business here, and large quantities are shipped from this station every year. The crop is not as heavy as usual. The growers all hope that the marketing will be more successful than formerly.

Company B of St. Johns Rangers . genealogy as well as regimental information pertaining to the soldiers of the regiment.
http://www.geocities.com/co_b_2nd_fl/index.html
Flag of the St Johns Ranger Todays Florida Flag Flag adopted in 1861 The Company started off as an independent Cavalry under the command of Capt Benjamin Hopkins.. with Winston Stephens as Lt. Ben Hopkins died of fever Feb 2 ,1862 and Winston would be come Capt over the Company. They became known as "Captain Stephens' Independent Cavalry" until December of 1862 when by special orders they formed the Co B 2nd Fla Cav.
On March 1, 1864, shortly the Battle of Olustee,Capt Winston J.T. Stephens was hit by enemy fire near Cedar Creek where he died.. Henry A. Gray would become the Companies third and last Captain. In 1865 the Confederacy would stack their arms and surrender with most of the Company being paroled in Waldo Florida during the Month of May..
I have found in one Colonel's report ( Colonel Carraway Smith ,who commanded the Cavalry Brigade at Olustee ) where he states that the Companies of Captain Stephens and other Captains of the 2nd Fl Cav. was highly satisfactory and they acted with the coolness and deliberation of Veterans.
I have put alot of work into all of my research and am constantly changing things and adding more information so check back often for Changes.. If you find a mistake somewehre let me know.. Most of my information comes form family members and pension records of each soldier and some from a page in the Hartman Biographical Rosters, The Rose Cottage Chronicles, and The Florida Book of Soldiers.

Florida Table of Contents
Welcome to the USGenWeb Archives Project for Florida. On this site you will find genealogically significant files that have been transcribed and contributed by volunteers. It is folks like you who have helped this project grow from its beginning in 1996 to what it is today. Please consider donating a file so that others may have free access to it. Remember, this site is what you make of it! If you have found useful information, please take a moment to thank the volunteer who donated the file. Happy hunting!
How to use the USGenWeb Archives
Use the County Tables of Contents This is the most popular way to navigate the Archives. Each county has a Table of Contents (TOC). On each TOC the files are organized by file type, with a brief description, the file size, date it was added to the Archives, and name of submitter. Search the USGenWeb Archives This search engine indexes all words in each document in the Archives. Therefore, a search can be on a surname, given name, or place, for example. Go directly to Florida ftp site This allows you to navigate through the Archives directory structure without using the county Tables of Contents found below. Files are organized by county, then file type. These are the exact same files you will find by using the county TOC, but there may also be a few new files that haven't yet been added to the TOC.
