When East and West Florida were united to become a territory of the United States, both Pensacola and St. Augustine desired to become the state capital. One idea that was considered was to alternate the meetings of the legislature in each community. Since this proved impractical, a compromise was reached to pick a site that would be of equal distance between Pensacola and St. Augustine. Tallahassee, an Apalachee Indian settlement which meant "old town" or "old fields, was thus selected to become the capital of the new U.S. territory of Florida. The first territorial governor of Florida, William Pope Duval, proclaimed Tallahassee the capital of Florida on Mar 4, 1824 and the 3rd session of the Territorial Council convened there in November in a temporary log building. The cornerstone of the earliest capitol building was laid in 1826 and the "Old Capitol" building was begun in 1839. In 1977 Florida built its present capitol building.
