School of Visual Arts and Dance
Dean: Jerry L. Draper
The School of Visual Arts and Dance is relatively young within the history of the University. Founded in 1973, the school has existed largely as presently constituted since 1978 when the Department of Dance faculty joined the other components of the school: the Department of Art, the Department of Art History, the Department of Art Education, the Department of Interior Design, the Institute for Contemporary Art, and The Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts. In 1990 the school assumed administration of the Appleton Museum of Art. These academic units offer an extensive program of instruction in all areas of the visual arts and dance. In fact, every level of undergraduate and graduate degree that a university can offer in these areas is represented within the school, including the established terminal degree in each discipline. Accordingly, the school is unique in the state of Florida. The school promotes the visual arts and dance within this community. Its goal is to provide a broad-based liberal arts education for students, while at the same time training them to be dancers, artists, scholars, teachers, or other professionals in the field. It functions to enrich their lives and to provide them with the means of self-expression in an increasingly complex and impersonal technological society. The study and practice of art are viewed as a necessary link in the educational system, both as a learning process and as a means of personal fulfillment. Measures are applied within the school-and indeed throughout The Florida State University campus-to keep the spirit of open inquiry vital and productive.

Florida has five of the nation's six most dangerous large metropolitan area for walking, according to a new national report that says dangerous street design and a lack of investment in pedestrian safety are to blame. The metro areas include Orlando (1), Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (2), West Palm Beach-Boca Raton (3), Jacksonville (5), and Miami-Ft. Lauderdale (6). Some of the most dangerous roads in the nation include U.S. 19 in Pasco and Pinellas Counties (accounting for an average of 16 pedestrian fatalities a year), U.S. 1 in Broward and Dade Counties (12 per year), and S.R. 50 in Orange County (7 per year). The report, Mean Streets 2002, reveals that 994 pedestrians died in Florida in 2000 and 2001. Released in November 2002, the report was prepared by the Surface Transportation Policy Project. Improved wastewater treatment and a ban on phosphorus-containing detergents have reduced point sources of phosphorus by 70% since the 1970s. South Florida The 16 counties of South Florida lie roughly within the area that extends from Lake Okeechobee, south through the Everglades, and into the Florida Keys. This diverse ecosystem includes wetlands, forested uplands, mangroves, beaches, and coral reefs. At one time, wetlands dominated the ecosystem, covering much of central and southern Florida (South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force, 1994). Photo 12. The population explosion in South Florida has dramatically changed the landscape from expansive wetlands to heavily developed communities. Florida's population explosion began after World War II. In 1940, the state had a population of 1.8 million; by 1996, the population had reached 14.3 million, an increase of almost 700%. Much of this growth has been along Florida's lower east coast, an area that currently accounts for about 4.5 million people. Dade County, which includes Miami, grew from more than 267,000 in 1940 to over 2 million people by 1994 (Bureau of the Census, 1996).

The Environmental Studies Area of Concentration is coordinated by the Environmental Studies Steering Committee. Staff: Jonathan Miller and Julie Morris. An interdisciplinary program, Environmental Studies draws students from varied backgrounds. Ideally students bring skills from several disciplines to bear on questions regarding the relationship between people and the environment. Complementing the disciplinary knowledge students bring with them, environmentally-related courses are offered in five broad areas: principles of ecology and field biology, human perception of and attitudes toward the environment; environmental policy and management; sense of place in relation to the natural and built environment; and environmental aesthetics, philosophy, and ethics. There has always been a risk in liberal arts education that knowledge will become detached from practice, that students will become intellectual jugglers of arcana, unable to affect the world. Recently undergraduate education has been criticized for disconnecting academic ideas and scholarship from social and environmental settings. The Environmental Studies Program seeks to "ground" students in two ways – first, by emphasizing demonstrated competence in real-world skills and second, by attempting to connect students with a landscape or community.
