TALLAHASSEE
Joining together as "one team" for Florida's students, Governor Jeb Bush, Lt. Governor Frank Brogan, the Commissioner of Education Tom Gallagher, Bay County Sheriff Guy Tunnell, and members of the education community today addressed the importance of school safety during a press conference. "Children can't learn and teachers can't teach if they are worrying about their safety," Governor Bush said. "In order to ensure that each and everyone of our state's teachers and students feel safe and secure in school, the Bush/Brogan A+ Plan for Education provides a 40 percent increase of $20 million to support local school safety needs." The additional funding the Bush/Brogan A+ Plan for Education provides can be used by schools to furnish more school resources officers, school security personnel, school-wide safety programs, after-school programs, additional alternative placement programs for disruptive students, more security equipment and technology. This month, over 2.3 million of Florida's K-12 students will head back to school. As they return to the classrooms, the Bush/Brogan A+ Plan for Education will help to ensure that students can learn and teachers can teach in a safe environment.

Good News About Block Scheduling Space Coast Middle School Pledges to strengthen individual excellence by pursuing the highest academic and technical standards essential to meet the demands of a global society Introduction to Block Scheduling Our goal at Space Coast Middle School is to align our teaching methods with what is currently known about the brain and learning. Much has been discovered in the past 40 years about the brain and how learning takes place, yet most secondary classrooms still look and function as they did at the turn of the century. Researcher shows that learning does not take place without to make connections and time to relate new material to what is already known. Longer blocks of class time provide good teachers with the quality time need to make the connections and allow for mastery learning. Several years ago Florida discontinued funding for a seven period school day but at the time, Brevard County had funds available to continue funding the seven period day. Knowing that local funds might not always be available, much information on alternative scheduling was collected so that when the School Board discussed not funding seven period day. November 12, 2002 Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community Members, The State Legislature enacted the School Improvement and Education Accountability Plan in 1991. It is a far-reaching and comprehensive plan designed to improve the quality of education in Florida through the combined efforts and involvement of parents, students, teachers, volunteers and others. During the 2000-01 school year, each school in Leon County continued the school improvement process by developing an improvement plan for the 2001-02 school year. Florida’s System of School Improvement and Accountability goals and priorities for improvement that were identified by the School Advisory Council were addressed by each school. Special emphasis was placed on Goal Three, which addresses student performance. It is important that all of us have the best information available in order to make sound decisions about the school programs and services we provide to our students. This report includes information about your school’s key data as they impact each of Florida’s System Improvement and Accountability goals. It also reflects the progress your school has made toward its 2001-02 School Improvement Plan. This information should help you assess the performance of your school and to determine ways you may be able to contribute to your school’s success.
