MIDDAY FITNESS CHALLENGE
How has PFA worked for the non-athlete or team sport lover? Other Sample Lessons: PFA KICKBALL
PFA 3-MINUTE CIRCUIT CHALLENGE
MIDDAY FITNESS CHALLENGE The objective is to work at your own pace and keep track of your reps on the different stations on the circuit. As you finish the allotted increment a teacher will hole punch the completed #. When your card is fully punched out an award will be given at an assembly to showcase your efforts. For a 8 x 10 printable punch card (PDF) click here. Not only do the students get full use out of the PFA equipment during PE classes, but now in the seven schools in the district they are all using PFA during their Midday Fitness Programs. Certain schools have scheduled mandatory PFA days and some schools are optional. PFA is used in each unit that is offered in my PE curriculum. No matter what we are doing outside, I will try to send the students to the circuit to perform certain exercises on PFA. Sometimes I use it to break up a lesson, or I purposely incorporate it into the rules of the game. The students enjoy the variety of two things going on at one time. How has PFA worked for the non-athlete or team sport lover?

Reading Skills Lesson Plan: Using Word Parts to Infer Meaning
Student Resource: "Jump for Center," by Barbara O. Webb
Media Type: Short Story Objectives: After completing this lesson, students will be able to:
  • Discuss measures of skills-related fitness and identify physical activities and sports that make use of them.
  • Identify rules of effective communication and explain the importance of using them in social situations.
  • Apply the reading skill of using word parts to infer meaning to a story about developing sports skills.
Introducing the Lesson Challenge students to identify the greatest living shortstop in baseball and to defend their answers with hard data. Allow a moment or two for discussion, which may be quite animated. Elicit through the discussion that one measure of a great defensive shortstop is range-the ability to cover a lot of ground when fielding a ball. Reveal that range is in turn a function of several measures of skills-related fitness, in particular agility, the ability to move quickly and gracefully. Invite students who participated in the discussion to come to the front of the class to settle another dispute. Ask them to name the greatest living ballet dancer and to defend their answers with hard data. If students are unable to name and/or discuss dancers, point out that playing shortstop and ballet dancing actually have much in common. Note that these dancers, like shortstops, need to be agile. Explain, moreover, that the jobs of shortstop and ballet dancer require good balance and good reaction time (the ability to respond rapidly to an event or other stimulus).

Media Literacy Lesson Plan: Recognizing a Message's Point of View
Student Resource: "What Exercise Can Do for You," by Sheila Globus [Jamestown]
Media Type: Article Objectives After completing this lesson, students will be able to:
  • Describe physical, mental, and social health benefits of regular exercise.
  • Identify ways in which they can make physical activity a regular part of their life.
  • Apply the media literacy skill of recognizing a message's point of view to an article advocating the benefits of exercise for teens.
Introducing the Lesson Tell students you are going to conduct an informal survey. Begin by asking how many of them enjoy swimming. Take a show of hands and write the results on the chalkboard. Do the same with cycling, skateboarding, snowboarding, skiing, hiking, or any other activity that is readily accessible in your community and that you think students might enjoy doing. Pretend to shift direction in your questioning by stating in a sober fashion that you have one more question for students. Then take a breath and ask pointedly, "How many of you like to exercise?" Allow for the possibility of groans and protests.

Why were the doctors and volunteers concerned for the health of the First Responders at Ground Zero? (Because of the toxins and particulates in the air, caused by the impact of the attacks, and the long-term effects this air pollution may have on their lungs.) Discuss the importance of lung safety, as outlined in the book. Are there any similarities between the effects after exposing the lungs, during a brief period, to the extreme pollution found at a site such as Ground Zero, and after longer-term exposure to cigarette smoke? Why is it important to maintain fitness and health, if you wish to volunteer?
