Before the home run...
before the layup...
before the slap shot... there was a ball and a stick. One of the oldest of competitive pastimes, the sport of field hockey dates back well before the Ancient Olympic Games. Although the exact origin of the game remains unknown, 4,000-year-old drawings found in the tomb at Beni-Hasen in the Nile Valley of Egypt depicted men playing the sport. Throughout the following centuries, variations of the game were played by a spectrum of cultures ranging from Greeks and Romans to Ethiopians and Aztecs. Hockey first appeared on the Olympic program at the 1908 London Games and again in 1920 at Antwerp. The sport was again featured on the program at Amsterdam in 1928 and has been an Olympic sport ever since. Women's hockey became a fixture on the Olympic program in Moscow in 1980.
Originally considered far too dangerous for female participation, field hockey quickly became popular with women whose previous introduction to sport included the "socially acceptable" outdoor activities of croquette and lawn tennis. With more and more women becoming active in the sport, the liberating game of field hockey earned the dubious title as the only team sport considered proper for women.

Olympic History: Field Hockey
Field hockey dates back to the Egyptians (2050 B.C.) and was one of the earliest sports where women were able to engage in strenuous activity. Over centuries, the rules and playing surfaces have changed, but the two-team stick-and-ball concept has remained intact. It was not until the 19th century that field hockey became firmly established and was still considered the only proper sport for women. As the sport spread in popularity throughout Europe, it reached the U.S. in 1901 and 21 years later, the U.S. Field Hockey Association was established. The International Federation of Women's Hockey Associations (IFWHA) was formed in 1927. The women played according to the men's rules, but their clothing was cumbersome. Skirts hung nearly to the ground to cover every inch of their legs and heavy petticoats, corsets, long sleeves and high, stiff collars impeded movement.

New Delhi: 23rd March:

It’s the likes of Phil Appleyards who killed hockey in India.

Extract: The Sahara Group that announced a reward of USD five million to Indian cricket team and the business magnet who carry India’s top film stars and celeberaties to World Cup cricket in his own flight came to hockey first before kicked away by the dual evil of archaic FIH’s approach and inept Indian administrators.

Details: Cricket proved in India how sports can be a national passion. Never before has any sports event captured people’s fancy and imagination to such a frenzy level as did the recent ICC World Cup cricket. So much so even politicians and cine stars of all hue are talking about it, taking it seriously. They all go in troves to South Africa to boost the morale of the Indian team.
...
Hockey? Hell with it. Officials ego is bigger than that. Am I wrong in castigating all these archaic FIH officials?
New Delhi: 19th March 2003:
Let Sachin Tendulkar get other awards before one thinks about Bharat Ratna
Extract: A leading political leader recently wrote to both President and Prime Minister of India requesting to confer the country’s top most civilian award Bharat Ratna to batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, much to the surprise of the sports lovers all over the country. This has created a public debate. Hockey’s mega star Dhanraj puts the things in proper perspectives.

Australian women retain Olympic gold in field hockey SportsLine.com wire reports
Sept. 29, 2000
SYDNEY, Australia Australia confirmed their status as the greatest women's hockey team in history on Friday with a 3-1 win over Argentina, to win the Olympic gold medal. Inspired by brilliant play from former captain Rechelle Hawkes, Claire Mitchell-Taverner and Nikki Hudson, Australia added the Sydney title to their victories in Seoul in 1988 and Atlanta four years ago. For 33-year-old Hawkes, the win over Argentina in front of her country was the crowning achievement in a magnificent career. "It hasn't sunk in yet that I have won three golds, but I think I will shed a few tears later tonight," Hawkes said. "Atlanta was awesome but this topped it, winning in our own country. I will always remember this for the rest of my life.

    History
Men's field hockey has been an Olympic sport since 1908 and women's field hockey was added to the program in 1980. In 1920 and 1932, the men's standings were determined by a round robin tournament and the women's version of the sport used a round robin tournament in 1980 and 1984. In all other years, a single-elimination tournament has been used, with a championship game to decide the gold and silver medals. For those years, the score shown under "Final" is the score of the gold medal game. The tournaments begin with two pools of teams playing preliminary round tournaments. In men's play, the top two teams in each pool advance to the semi-finals. In the women's tournament, the top three teams advance. Top of page

    The PGA Championship
    History
Rodman Wanamaker, son of the Philadelphia department store magnate, called a meeting of golf pros in early 1916 and offered to donate $2,580 as prize money for a tournament if the golfers agreed to form a national organization. As a result, the Professional Golfers Association of America was founded in June of that year and the association's championship tournament was held at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York, from Oct. 10 through 16. Also at Wanamaker's suggestion, it was a match-play tournament. Long Jim Barnes beat Jock Hutchison Sr. in the final match. Because of World War I, the tournament wasn't held again until 1919, when Barnes successfully defended his title with a 6-and-5 victory over Fred McLeod. Because of the constraints of television, the tournament was switched to stroke play in 1958. Top of page

    Women lose 'nightmare' against U.S.
By JASON SCOTT Winnipeg Sun The Canadian women's field hockey team probably had bad dreams about the goals that got away. The team missed several terrific opportunities to score, including a gaping corner, during their crucial game against Team USA yesterday which ended in a 1-0 loss. "It was a big, bad nightmare," said Winnipeg native Christine Hunter after the hard-fought game. "We've been training for two years now towards this tournament and we knew that was the game." "It's a pretty big loss, especially to the Americans. You want to beat them," she said. Canada needed to win to ensure a spot in the gold-medal game.
