It is almost exclusively rural with a subsistence economy. Culture Kosraean customs have changed since first contact with European explorers, however, many of the attitudes and values still exist today. Missionaries discouraged certain traditional practices that they deemed inappropriate, nevertheless, some aspects of the culture still thrive among Kosraeans. For example, older people must be treated with respect when met. It is also customary to invite strangers to eat at mealtime. Feasts and food giving were once a common form of tribute to the king, but the practice has continued as a family custom. This cultural practice is especially important at weddings, a child's first birthday, and funerals. Kosraean children have a deep sense of pride that usually is hidden. The elders usually consider quiet children to be "good." Language Kosraean is closely related to the Micronesian languages of Chuuk, the Marshalls, and Pohnpei. It is spoken in the home, at work, and in other arenas. English is spoken in schools and government establishments and upon meeting foreigners. Kosraean belongs to the Austronesian language family, as do all of the Micronesian languages.

April 8, 2003 8:29 AM Geography and Climate The Republic of Palau, the westernmost of the six major Micronesian island groups, includes more than 300 islands, eight of which are populated by approximately 16,000 inhabitants. With three exceptions, all the inhabited islands are situated within a barrier reef, which has made for greater cultural homogeneity and relative ease of communication and travel within the area. Economy and Government The FSM government consists of three separate branches: Executive, Legislative and Judicial. However, operating very autonomous states, many governmental functions are carried out by the State governments. The Federated States have a very small commercial fishing industry. A push to re-address economic development is taking place, and leaders are exploring what economic development should look like in Micronesia. Culture Each of the four states of FSM have their own distinct culture and tradition though similarities including the importance of the Christian church, the traditional extended family and the matrilineal social structure. Ethnic ancestors of Micronesian include early settlers from Melanesia, Polynesia, and Malaysia. CHUUK STATE Hey Folks! Chuuk is the traditional and currently used name in lieu of Truk. In 1986 with the Compact of Free Association, Chuuk reverted to its traditional name. Chuuk state consists of seven major island groups lying within the Eastern Caroline Islands, about 617 miles (1028 km) southeast of Guam and 3,262 miles (5,436 km) southwest of Hawaii. The total land mass of Chuuk state, including the outer islands, is approximately 77 square miles (128 km). YAP FEDERATED STATES OF MICRONESIA Part of the Federated States of Micronesia, Yap is situated in the Western Caroline, between Guam and Palau. It is off the main tourist route and is made up of four main islands - Yap Proper, Tamil - Gagil, Maap and Rumung, plus ten small islands all within the boundaries of a beautiful coral reef. Click here for a space shuttle photograph of Yap. The landscape consists of rolling hills and lowlands covered with thick jungle like vegetation. Most of the coastal areas are mangroves with occasional coral beaches. Like other FSM islands, there is a coral reef, so snorkelling is popular as is diving in the crystal clear lagoon with the giant manta rays which appear at certain times of the year. The town of Colonia on Yap Proper is the capital and is slightly more urbanized than the village area. Yap also has 130 outer islands stretching nearly 600 miles east of Yap Island. Most of the other islands are coral atolls and are sparsely populated by a people different from the Yapese in culture and language. Four indigenous languages are spoken. These are Yapese, Ulithian, Woleaian and Satawalese . English is the official language so some local Government organizations still conduct business in the Yapese language. Because of its position, Yap was minimally affected when the Spanish colonized Micronesia in the 1500s and again during German occupation from the end of the 1800s to the beginning of World War I.

A more traditional island lifestyle prevails, surrounded by the spectacular beauty of the islands and their seas. An integral part of Continental Micronesia's 'Island Hopper' route across Micronesia, the Federated States of Micronesia attracts the more adventurous traveller, such as experienced sports divers, underwater photographers, hikers and backpackers. Both Kosrae and Pohnpei are situated far to the east of the group and share a similar climate and geography. They are high volcanic islands with cloud shrouded peaks, lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls and hidden mountain pools. They share the same pristine, fringing coral reefs, clear azure seas, mangroves and sandy beaches. The Lelu ruins reached its peak in the 12th century. Nan Madol, however, began construction as early as 500 AD and was toppled by the present day traditional government in the 1520s. Chuuk is renowned for its dramatic wreck diving, which is recognized as the best of its kind in the world. Its vast lagoon, more than 30 miles across, was Japan's 'Pearl Harbour' and more than 100 ships and aircraft were sunk while sheltering here during World War II. The warm, tropical water, prolific marine life and ocean currents have transformed these wrecks into breathtakingly beautiful coral gardens and artificial reefs, home to hundreds of marine animals and fish.
