March 19, 2003 Florida Prepares for Anticipated Funding to Promote Responsible Fatherhood and Healthy Marriages TALLAHASSEE Legislation to promote responsible fatherhood and healthy marriages with an appropriation of more than $300 million a year for five years has been passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and is being considered by the Senate. Florida’s Commission on Responsible Fatherhood is working to prepare practitioners to apply for the funding, which is anticipated to become available by October of this year. "Our regional conferences provide ideal opportunities to be trained in three national models of fatherhood programs and a national model of marriage education," said Matthew Munyon, executive director of the Commission. Ramona Warren from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will open the Commission’s March 27th conference in Tallahassee with information on the anticipated funding opportunity for service providers. Conference participants will have the opportunity to earn continuing education units and obtain certification in fatherhood public awareness strategies and national models of fatherhood and marriage education programs. In recognition of the Commission’s efforts to keep fathers involved, children nurtured and families strong, Tallahassee Mayor John Marks will declare March 27, 2003 Responsible Fatherhood Awareness Day in Tallahassee.

Fingerplays can teach that we play with people who are different from us, and that girls and boys do not have to fit the passive/active roles portrayed in traditional rhymes. Similarly, look for rhymes that reflect current technology and society. If you find a fingerplay which is outdated, change the language (and make a new rhyme). Keep the fingerplays brief. A short verse will keep children's attention and be easier to master. When teaching a new fingerplay, mirror the action you want the children to perform. Say the lines slowly and repeat the same line a few times before going to the next. When introducing unfamiliar words or concepts, stop and talk about what the word means, and show a picture of it if possible. Never tell a child his hand movement is wrong. I Purpose by the Lord's assistance to treat of this section of the Gospel which has just been read; nor is there a little difficulty here, lest the truth be endangered, and falsehood glory. Not that either the truth can perish, nor falsehood triumph. Monday Apr 7 2003 TV Soup Gallery - Submitted Videos Blues Harp Summit Teach-In Sonny Boy Williamson II Library and Community Center Glendora, Mississippi On December 5th and 6th, 1998, prominent blues harmonica players from around the country will convene in the Mississippi Delta town of Glendora, birthplace of blues legend Sonny Boy Williamson II (Aleck Rice Miller), to pay tribute to his musical legacy and conduct a blues harp teach-in to benefit the town's newly-opened Sonny Boy Williamson Library and Community Center. Lee Oskar, Blind Mississippi Morris, Jumpin' Johnny Sansone, Bruce 'Sunpie' Barnes, Rockin' Jake of New Orleans, Mark McGrain (of the Anders Osborne Band), Arthur Williams, and regional players Steve Cheseborough, Dave Thaden and Ron Pierce have all committed to the weekend. Tentatively scheduled to attend are also Sugar Blue, Rod Piazza, Paul deLay, and T.J. Wheeler. Sonny Boy Williamson Art work by Bix Smith Other supporters of the event include The Southern Music Network of Alabama, who have donated a case of 100 harmonicas to the children to be taught at the event; Hohner Harmonica Company has donated an additional 50 harps, plus advertising funds to permit a souvenir program to be issued; Lee Oskar Harmonicas has donated a dozen valuable player-autographed harmonicas to be used as raffle prizes in a book and record donation campaign for the Center, as will be 10 vintage Sonny Boy tee-shirts donated by the Hohner Company. All player/teachers and other supporters of the event are volunteering their time and skills without pay to benefit the Center and the town of Glendora, an extraordinarily impoverished community even by the usual dire standards of the Mississippi Delta area. With a population of 400, more than 93% of its inhabitants live more than 50% below the poverty limit. Children comprise 167 of Glendora's citizens, many of whom are relatives of Sonny Boy Williamson but had never heard his music until a video about him was shown at the Center's dedication last August. Glendora's mayor, Johnny B. Thomas, is himself a cousin of Sonny Boy on his mother's side.
