in fashion and the art of tailoring sewing machines now do the work on straightseams better than could be done by hand; new fabric technology has history
http://www.lone-star.net/mall/literature/tailor4.htm
The History of Tailoring: An Overview by G. Bruce Boyer The knowledge and art of tailoring, of cutting and sewing cloth the two basic aspects of constructing clothes from a pattern developed slowly and gradually in Europe between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. The Oxford English Dictionary's first reference to the word "tailor" gives the specific date of 1297; and certainty by that date tailoring guilds, as well as those of weavers, and cloth merchants were well established in Europe. During the Middle Ages clothing had been regarded as a means of concealing the body. But with the Renaissance came the accentuation of the human form. The loose robe, that standard uniform of the medieval period so easily constructed from a single piece or two of cloth, was shortened and tightened, and eventually cut, pieced, and sewn together in attempts to bring into prominence the contours of the human form. This was the birth of tailoring and, in fact, of fashion. These attempts at re-constructing the human body in fabric called for a growing expert skill and division of labor. Soon the cutter (the one who makes the pattern) and tailor (the one who does the sewing) joined other craftsmen as important members of the community. Until this time the cloth had been the distinguishing feature of garments, and the wearer took most of the responsibility for the design ~ and, in most cases, the actual production ~ of his own clothes. But little by little, the tailor took on equal importance with the weaver, and gradually came to overshadow him. Master tailors in the growing towns eventually became responsible for the clothing needs of society, and the art and science of tailoring became a highly specialized, complex, and jealously guarded craft.

http://www.exploreshopping.com/designers_history/brioni.htm
The Past and the Present
The name Brioni first appeared in 1945 when master tailor Nazareno Fonticoli and fashion designer Gaetano Savini opened one of the first men's fashion houses in Rome's central Via Barberini. The two partners named it Brioni after one of the most elegant resorts on the Adriatic coast. Its custom tailoring was a favourite haunt of Europe's aristocracy and has remained a reference point for quality shopping to this day.
Brioni's Italian style expressed a new way of dressing for men immediately after the first world war. It was instantly accepted because it managed to unite renewal with a classic stylish cut. Interest grew as the Brioni collections went from one success to the next and enthusiastic buyers flocked to the fashion shows.
Their first historic show was held in 1952 at Palazzo Pitti in Florence and soon Brioni became the first true ambassador of men's fashion in the world.
In the 1950s when Rome became the Hollywood on the Tiber, movie celebrities began to buy their suits from Brioni. These included the like of Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Rock Hudson and many more. In 1954 Brioni held a fashion show in New York and then in eight other American cities. Those wer the years when all eyes were riveted on the Italian fashion scene and Brioni's "Roman style"scored successes and collected awards on both sides of the Atlantic. Brioni opened shops in all the major capitals.

84. Le Firme UOMO/DONNA Canada - Italian Designer Fashion - History Of Louis Vuitton
The history of travel has always been linked to this legendary Frenchman. and photogenicMarc Jacobs has long been the darling of New York fashion critics.
http://www.exploreshopping.com/designers_history/louis_vuitton.htm
The Past and the Present
Louis Vuitton was born in Anchay in the Jura Mountains in 1821. At age fourteen, Louis Vuitton set out for Paris on foot. After two years of learning a trade, he arrived in Paris in 1837 where he is apprenticed to a packing-case maker.
The history of travel has always been linked to this legendary Frenchman. The tradition of Louis Vuitton goes back a long way. The company was founded in 1854 by luggage manufacturer Louis Vuitton Malletier who set the standards for design by insisting on extraordinary quality and craftmanship in every product. Catering to the rich and beautiful, Louis Vuitton often custom-made extravagant orders, such as a 1930's toiletry case in crocodile skin and tortoise shell for a famous opera diva, and a desk trunk for conductor Leopold Stokowski. His visionary approach in designing luggage was unrivaled during his days. A good example was in 1875, the couturier Charles Frédéric Worth divulged an important trade secret to Louis Vuitton: crinolines and leg-of-mutton sleeves would soon give way to softer materials. Louis Vuitton responded to this information by adding to his range of trunks one with hanging space and several drawers: this became the famous Wardrobe, the first piece of furniture used for travelling. In recent years Louis Vuitton has dusted off its slightly stuffy image. The bags, still made of exotic leathers like alligator, lizard and ostrich, have been updated to a modern version of sport luxe. The line now includes back- and fannypacks. But the most revolutionary change was the appointment of young American designer Marc Jacobs as artistic director in March 1997, and the introduction of his ready-to-wear line.

Reviews
From Booklist , January 1, 1999
Though very slick in appearance and presentation, this book is actually a history of black men in America, their style variation and self-expression in a nation that has offered few venues for such. The popularity of black male sports and entertainment figures has brought attention to the way they dress. Yet, we've seldom seen writers of color reflect on the topics of fashion and race. This book reveals the substantial influence of black men on the fashion industry, if for no other reason than the rebel role that has so often been assigned to black men who couldn't find acceptance in the culture, e.g., the contributions the hip-hop style on fashion as well as music. The book includes interviews with or essays by several prominent black men, including Cornel West, Bryant Gumbel, Ed Bradley, Jesse Jackson, Samuel L. Jackson and LL Cool J. Readers interested in U.S. fashion history and the interplay with race and politics will enjoy this book. Vernon Ford

"Every piece we make is a unique and original artwork. Every design is hand-crafted. Every hole, every lace, every knot is hand-made. There are no machines involved: just our hands, scissors, a hole punch and our imagination. No glueing, no sewing. This is what you pay for: our imagination, magic, creativity and the many, many hours of handlabour. We use bicycle and moped innertubes, sometimes decorated with beads and stuff. We really enjoy working with this material and we find it a challenge to work with the restricted forms and shapes of the used tubes and gravity. It feels more like sculpturing than sewing. To wear a Zuss fashion design is not a trifle; you will be very conscious of it, especially if wearing skin-tight. This sturdy and pigheaded material feels cool when it hits your flesh, but heated by your bodyheat it becomes soft and gives you the
